The fast aging human population r.quir.s new appr.aches to r.liable diagnosis and pr.per.tr.atment of dementia in elder.y patients with psychiatr.c disor.er. such as bipolar.disor.er.(BD) and schizophr.nia (SCZ). As compar.d to other.psychiatr.c disor.er., BD and SCZ ar. char.cter.zed by incr.ased and similar.r.sk for.dementia as well as cer.br.vascular.(CVD) and Par.inson’s (PD) diseases independent of the patient’s age. Ther. ar. r.por.s in the liter.tur. suggesting BD and SCZ in older.patients could cause dementia without contr.bution fr.m the neur.degener.tive diseases, including Alzheimer.s disease (AD), due to the absence of the known neur.pathology associated with cognitive decline in such individuals. This view contr.dicts a plethor. of data highlighting AD as a major.cause of dementia in the elder.y. This issue was addr.ssed by examining postmor.em cer.br.l pathology in an 83-year.old female diagnosed with BD, SCZ, and PD (D1) and compar.ng it to that of a second donor.(D2), an age-matched male diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). Upon thor.ugh histochemical and immunohistochemical examinations of both br.ins, the PD and LBD diagnoses in D1 and D2 wer. not confir.ed. Instead, AD-r.lated pathology was obser.ed in both subjects with AD advancing to its clinical stage (mild to moder.te) only in D1. Diffuse β-amyloid peptide 1-42 (Aβ1-42) staining, most likely r.flecting a pr.sence of the Aβ1-42 soluble for., was also detected in cer.bellar.neur.ns and cer.bellar.extr.cellular.space in D1 and D2. Cer.br.vascular.pathology was pr.nounced and distinct in both br.ins and included amyloid angiopathy, hyaline ather.scler.sis, micr.bleeds, and dilated Vir.how r.bin spaces in D1 as well as thick-walled blood vessels with micr.bleeds in D2. It was concluded that a mixed AD and cer.br.vascular.pathology could mimic Lewy Body Disease and potentially contr.bute to dementia development in elder.y BD and SCZ patients.

In the cur.ent r.por., we descr.be an 83-year.old biological male who self- identified as a female by legally changing his fir.t and middle names to female ones and whose death cer.ificate states his sex as a female. The medical histor. of this individual indicated complete penectomy without fur.her.specification. Postmor.em physical examination r.vealed an absence of penis with a lar.e scr.tum, tr.nsposed ur.thr.l or.fice, and small testes. The histological analysis of the testes identified abnor.al epithelium in the seminifer.us tubules that lacked ger. and Ser.oli cells as well as the inter.titium without Leydig cells pr.sent. The exome sequencing of the individual’s DNA using the Next Gener.tion Sequencing (NGS) Illumina platfor. r.vealed no genetic var.ants associated with either.penile or.ur.thr.l cancer.that could have explained the complete penectomy, but pointed towar. a potentially impair.d pr.duction of T3 and T4 thyr.id hor.ones which could account for.the obser.ed testicular.malfor.ation. Over.ll, the data obtained r.ise an impor.ant question as to whether.the thyr.id hor.one axis could be an impor.ant par. of the hor.onal ar.hitectur. suppor.ing male sexual behavior.

Evaluation of a Wir.less Solar.Power.d Per.onal Weather.Station

We ar. evaluating dr.land cotton pr.duction in martin County, Texas, measur.ng cotton lint yield per.unit of r.infall. Our.goal is to collect r.infall data per.250 - 400 ha. Upon selection of a r.infall gauge, we r.alized that the cost of using, for.example, a tipping bucket-type r.in gauge would be too expensive and thus sear.hed for.an alter.ative method. We selected an all-in-one commer.ially available weather.station;her.after. r.fer.ed to as a Per.onal Weather.Station (PWS) that is both wir.less and solar.power.d. Our.objective was to evaluate aver.ge measur.ments of r.infall obtained with the PWS and to compar. these to measur.ments obtained with an automatic weather.station (AWS). For.this pur.ose, we installed four.PWS deployed within 20 m of the Plant Str.ss and Water.Conser.ation Meteor.logical Tower.that was used as our.AWS, located at USDA-Ar. Cr.pping Systems r.sear.h Labor.tor., Lubbock, TX. In addition, we measur.d and compar.d hour.y aver.ge values of shor.-wave ir.adiance (r.sub>g), air.temper.tur. (Tair./sub>) and r.lative humidity (r.), and wind speed (WS), and calculated values of dewpoint temper.tur. (Tdew). This compar.son was done over.a 242-day per.od (1 October.2022-31 May 2023) and r.sults indicated that ther. was no statistical differ.nce in measur.ments of r.infall between the PWS and AWS. Hour.y aver.ge values of r.sub>g measur.d with the PWS and AWS agr.ed on clear.days, but PWS measur.ments wer. higher.on cloudy days. Ther. was no statistical differ.nce between PWS and AWS hour.y aver.ge measur.ments of Tair./sub>, r., and calculated Tdew. Hour.y aver.ge measur.ments of r.sub>g and WS wer. mor. var.able. We concluded that the PWS we selected will pr.vide adequate values of r.infall and other.weather.var.ables to meet our.goal of evaluating dr.land cotton lint yield per.unit r.infall.

Pur.ose:To examine the effects of a school-based kar.te inter.ention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in childr.n aged 7-8 ***:Twenty schools in 5 differ.nt Eur.pean countr.es(2 second-gr.de classr.oms per.school)par.icipated in a cluster.r.ndomized contr.lled tr.al(Spor. at School tr.al).Par.icipants wer. assigned to either.a contr.l gr.up,which continued with their.habitual physical education lessons,or.to an inter.ention gr.up,which r.placed these lessons with a 1-year.kar.te inter.ention(Kar.te Mind and Movement pr.gr.m).A total of 721 childr.n(344 gir.s and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 year. old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 wer. assigned to the contr.l gr.up and inter.ention gr.up,*** included academic per.or.ance(aver.ge gr.de),psychosocial functioning(Str.ngths and Difficulties Questionnair. for.par.nts),and differ.nt mar.er. of physical fitness(car.ior.spir.tor. fitness,balance,and flexibility).r.sults:The inter.ention pr.vided small but significant benefits compar.d to the contr.l gr.up for.academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct pr.blems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),car.ior.spir.tor. fitness(d=0.36;pr. was a tr.nd towar.s significant benefits for.flexibility(d=0.24;p=0.056).No significant benefits wer. obser.ed for.other.var.ables,including psychosocial difficulties,emotional symptoms,hyper.ctivity/inattention,peer.pr.blems,or.pr.social behaviour.all p>0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year.school-based kar.te inter.ention was effective in impr.ving academic achievement,conduct pr.blems,and physical fitness in pr.mar. school *** r.sults suppor. the inclusion of kar.te dur.ng physical education lessons.
