BACKGROUND Alcoholic liver disease(ALD)remains one of the major indications for liver transplantation in the United States and continues to place a burden on the national healthcare *** is evidence of increased alcohol consumption during the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,and the effect of this on the already burdened health systems remains *** To assess the trends for ALD admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic,and compare it to a similar pre-pandemic *** This retrospective study analyzed all admissions at a tertiary health care system,which includes four regional *** admissions were identified by querying a multi-hospital health system’s electronic database using ICD-10 *** admissions were compared for two one-year periods;pre-COVID-19 from April 2019 to March 2020,and during-COVID-19 from April 2020 to March *** were analyzed using a Poisson regression model and admission rates were compared using the annual quarterly average for the two time periods,with stratification by age and *** increase or decrease in admissions from the Poisson regression model were reported as incident rate *** One thousand three hundred and seventy-eight admissions for ALD were included.80.7%were Caucasian,and 34.3%were *** increase in the number of admissions for ALD during the COVID-19 pandemic was *** women,a sharp rise(33%)was noted in those below the age of 50 years,and an increase of 22%in those above 50 *** men,an increase of 24%was seen for those below 50 years,and a 24%decrease in those above 50 *** The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread implications,and an increase in ALD admissions is just one of ***,given that women are often prone to rapid progression of ALD,this finding has important preventive health implications.

Potential influence of wildfire in modulating climate-induced forest redistribution in a central Rocky Mountain landscape

Introduction:Climate change is expected to impose significant tension on the geographic distribution of tree ***,tree species range shifts may be delayed by their long life spans,capacity to withstand long periods of physiological stress,and dispersal *** could theoretically break this biological inertia by killing forest canopies and facilitating species redistribution under changing *** investigated the capacity of wildfire to modulate climate-induced tree redistribution across a montane landscape in the central Rocky Mountains under three climate scenarios(contemporary and two warmer future climates)and three wildfire scenarios(representing historical,suppressed,and future fire regimes).Methods:Distributions of four common tree species were projected over 90 years by pairing a climate niche model with a forest landscape simulation model that simulates species dispersal,establishment,and mortality under alternative disturbance regimes and climate ***:Three species(Douglas-fir,lodgepole pine,subalpine fir)declined in abundance over time,due to climate-driven contraction in area suitable for establishment,while one species(ponderosa pine)was unable to exploit climate-driven expansion of area suitable for *** fire frequency accelerated declines in area occupied by Douglas-fir,lodgepole pine,and subalpine fir,and it maintained local abundance but not range expansion of ponderosa ***:Wildfire may play a larger role in eliminating these conifer species along trailing edges of their distributions than facilitating establishment along leading edges,in part due to dispersal limitations and interspecific competition,and future populations may increasingly depend on persistence in locations unfavorable for their establishment.

Brown Bear-Human Conflict Management at Brooks River, Katmai National Park and Preserve

From 1989-2009, 1,430 bear management report forms collected at Brooks Camp, KNP （Katmai National Park）, were placed in 1 of 9 categories representing bear-human interactions of concern. Using non-parametrical statistics the categories identified dominance interactions, fish-related dominance interactions, food obtained, food-related incidents, fish stolen, property damage, and use of deterrents either decreasing or exhibiting no significant trends over time. Aggressive behavior by bears towards park staff in bear management situations increased. An elevated walkway and platform at Brooks Falls and an electric fence at the campground marked significant decrease in bear-human interactions in these areas. Changes in fishing regulations in 1998 marked significant decreases in number of fish stolen. Changes in minimum distance regulations in 2003 marked no change in number of dominance interactions or bluff charges. Efforts to facilitate visitor traffic in areas around the floating bridge have marked significant increases in number of bear-human interactions. Management and policy efforts have been successful in minimizing bear-human interactions. Habituation of bears to human activity has likely contributed to both minimizing general interactions and increased aggressive bear behavior towards management staff. This study provides examples of successful adaptive management tactics for bears and humans in a visitor oriented setting.

Are Northeastern U.S. forests vulnerable to extreme drought?

In the Northeastern U.S.,drought is expected to increase in frequency over the next century,and therefore,the responses of trees to drought are important to *** is recent debate about whether land-use change or moisture availability is the primary driver of changes in forest species composition in this *** argue that fire suppression from the early twentieth century to present has resulted in an increase in shade-tolerant and pyrophobic tree species that are drought intolerant,while others suggest precipitation variability as a major driver of species *** this debate,an emerging hypothesis is that mesophication and increases in the abundance of mesophytic genera(e.g.,Acer,Betula,and Fagus)resulted in forests that are more vulnerable to *** review examines the published literature and factors that contribute to drought vulnerability of Northeastern *** assessed two key concepts related to drought vulnerability,including drought tolerance(ability to survive drought)and sensitivity(short-term responses to drought),with a focus on Northeastern *** assessed drought-tolerance classifications for species,which revealed both consistencies and inconsistencies,as well as contradictions when compared to actual observations,such as higher mortality for drought-tolerant *** to drought sensitivity,recent work has focused on isohydric/anisohydric regulation of leaf water ***,based on the review of the literature,we conclude that drought sensitivity should be viewed in terms of multiple variables,including leaf abscission,stomatal sensitivity,turgor pressure,and dynamics of non-structural *** considered drought sensitive(e.g.,Acer,Betula,and Liriodendron)may actually be less prone to drought-induced mortality and dieback than previously considered because stomatal regulation and leaf abscission in these species are effective at preventing water potential from reaching critica
