Reliable cell purification and determination of cell purity:crucial aspects of olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation for spinal cord repair

The liver plays a central role in iron metabolism. It is the major storage site for iron and also expresses a complex range of molecules which are involved in iron transport and regulation of iron homeostasis. An increasing number of genes associated with hepatic iron transport or regulation have been identified. These include transferrin receptors （TFRI and 2）, a ferrireductase （STEAP3）, the transporters divalent metal transporter-1 （DMT1） and ferroportin （FPN） as well as the haemochromatosis protein, HFE and haemojuvelin （HJV）, which are signalling molecules. Many of these genes also participate in iron regulatory pathways which focus on the hepatic peptide hepcidin. However, we are still only beginning to understand the complex interactions between liver iron transport and iron homeostasis. This review outlines our current knowledge of molecules of iron metabolism and their roles in iron transport and regulation of iron homeostasis.

Classifying forest inventory data into species-based forest community types at broad extents： exploring tradeoffs among supervised and unsupervised approaches

Background： knowledge of the different kinds of tree communities that currently exist can provide a baseline for assessing the ecological attributes of forests and monitoring future changes. Forest inventory data can facilitate the development of this baseline knowledge across broad extents, but they first must be classified into forest community types. Here, we compared three alternative classifications across the United States using data from over 117,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis （FIA） plots. Methods： Each plot had three forest community type labels：（1）＂FIA＂ types were assigned by the FIA program using a supervised method; （2）＂USNVC＂ types were assigned via a key based on the U.S. National Vegetation Classification; （3）＂empirical＂ types resulted from unsupervised clustering of tree species information. We assessed the degree to which analog classes occurred among classifications, compared indicator species values, and used random forest models to determine how well the classifications could be predicted using environmental variables. Results： The classifications generated groups of classes that had broadly similar distributions, but often there was no one-to-one analog across the classifications. The Iongleaf pine forest community type stood out as the exception： it was the only class with strong analogs across all classifications. Analogs were most lacking for forest community types with species that occurred across a range of geographic and environmental conditions, such as Ioblolly pine types, indicator species metrics were generally high for the USNVC, suggesting that LJSNVC classes are floristically well-defined. The empirical classification was best predicted by environmental variables. CIPk9: a calcium sensor-interacting protein kinase required for low-potassium tolerance in Arabidopsis

Potassium is one of the major macro-nutrients essential for a number of cellular processes in plants. Low potassiumlevel in the soil represents a limiting factor for crop production. Recent studies have identified potassium transporters thatare involved in potassium acquisition, and some of them are critical for potassium nutrition under low potassium condi-tions. However, little is understood on the molecular components involved in low potassium signaling and responses. Wereport here the identification of a calcineurin B-like protein-interacting protein kinase （CIPk9） as a critical regulator oflow potassium response in Arabidopsis. The CIPk9 gene was responsive to abiotic stress conditions, and its transcriptwas inducible in both roots and shoots by potassium deprivation. Disruption of CIPk9 function rendered the mutantplants hypersensitive to low potassium media. Further analysis indicated that k+uptake and content were not affected inthe mutant plants, implying CIPk9 in the regulation of potassium utilization or sensing processes.

In this paper,we propose a space-time rescaling scheme for computing the long time evolution of multiple precipitates in an elastically stressed *** algorithm is second order accurate in time,spectrally accurate in space and enables one to simulate the evolution of precipitates in a fraction of the time normally used by fixed-frame *** particular,we extend the algorithm recently developed for single particle by Li et al.(Li,Lowengrub and Leo,***.,335(2007),554)to the multiple particle case,which involves key differences in the *** results show that without elasticity there are successive tip splitting phenomena accompanied by the formation of narrow channels between the *** presence of applied elastic field,the precipitates form dendrite-like structures with the primary arms aligned in the principal directions of the elastic *** demonstrate that when the far-field flux decreaseswith the effective radius of the system,tip-splitting and dendrite formation can be suppressed,as in the one particle *** on the initial position of the precipitates,we further observe that some precipitates grow while others may shrink,even when a positive far field flux is applied.
