Aims How species respond to climate change at local scales will depend on how edaphic and biological characteristics interact with species physiological limits and traits such as *** seeders,those species that depend on fire for recruitment,have few and epi-sodic opportunities to track a changing climate *** such cases,long-distance seed dispersal will be necessary to take advan-tage of rare recruitment *** examine recruitment patterns and seedling growth below,at and above the timberline of an obligate-seeding Australian montane forest tree(Eucalyptus delegatensis)after stand-replacing fire,and place these changes in the context of regional *** We use two methods to detect whether *** can estab-lish and persist above the timberline after stand-replacing wildfire in montane forests in south-east ***,we examine estab-lishment patterns by using belt transects at six sites to quantify how changes in post-fire recruit density with increasing distance above the timberline seven years ***,to determine whether dispersal or physiological constraints determine post-fire establish-ment patterns,we transplanted seedlings and saplings into bare ground above(100 m elevation),at,and below(50 m elevation)timberline 18-months after *** monitored seedling growth and survival for one growing *** Findings There was minimal upslope migration of the species after fire with most saplings observed near seed-bearing timberline trees,with only occasional outpost *** seedlings and saplings sur-vived equally well across one growing season when planted above existing timberlines,relative to saplings at or below the *** and sapling growth rates also did not differ across these location,although seedlings grew at much faster rates than *** findings suggest that upslope growing season conditions are unlikely to limit initial range expansion of trees aft

Ampullary cancer of intestinal origin and duodenal cancer-A logical clinical and therapeutic subgroup in periampullary cancer

Periampullary cancers include pancreatic, ampullary, biliary and duodenal cancers. At presentation, the majority of periampullary tumours have grown to involve the pancreas, bile duct, ampulla and duodenum. This can result in difficulty in defining the primary site of origin in all but the smallest tumors due to anatomical proximity and architectural distortion. This has led to variation in the reported proportions of resected periampullary cancers. Pancreatic cancer is the most common cancer resected with a pancreaticoduodenectomy followed by ampullary(16%-50%), bile duct(5%-39%), and duodenal cancer(3%-17%). Patients with resected duodenal and ampullary cancers have a better reported median survival(29-47 mo and 22-54 mo) compared to pancreatic cancer(13-19 mo). The poorer survival with pancreatic cancer relates to differences in tumour characteristics such as a higher incidence of nodal, neural and vascular invasion. While small ampullary cancers can present early with biliary obstruction, pancreatic cancers need to reach a certain size before biliary obstruction ensues. This larger size at presentation contributes to a higher incidence of resection margin involvement in pancreatic cancer. Ampullary cancers can be subdivided into intestinal or pancreatobiliary subtype cancers with histomolecular staining. This avoids relying on histomorphology alone, as even some poorly differentiated cancers preserve the histomolecular profile of their mucosa of origin. Histomolecular profiling is superior to anatomic location in prognosticating survival. Ampullary cancers of intestinal subtype and duodenal cancers are similar in their intestinal origin and form a logical clinical and therapeutic subgroup of periampullary cancers. They respond to 5-FU based chemotherapeutic regimens such as capecitabine-oxaliplatin. Unlike pancreatic cancers, KRAS mutation occurs in only approximately a third of ampullary and duodenal cancers. Interfacial assembly of two-dimensional MXenes

Two-dimensional(2d) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides, known as MXenes, are emerging quickly at the frontiers of 2d materials world. Their exotic properties such as the highest electrical conductivity among all solution-processed 2 d materials, the best electromagnetic interference shielding performance outperforming that of copper or aluminum at a nanoscale thickness, as well as the highest volumetric capacitance for pseudocapacitors, have been attracting extensive fundamental research and applications. Their unique surface chemistries, that is, hydrophilic groups terminated on the surface of MXenes after etching and delamination, enable plenty of opportunities for assembling into MXene building blocks. Particularly, assembling at liquid–liquid, liquid–solid, liquid–air, and solid–solid interfaces allows the efficient fabrication of various structures, including MXene surfactants, MXene heterostructures, MXene transparent films. Interfacial assembly of MXenes is of significance in unveiling more versatilities of MXenes as well as impacts on novel MXene-based architectures, based on which enhanced performance of devices is achieved. As such, this review focuses on the interfacial assembly of MXenes, explaining mechanisms behind various assembling and providing classical examples for corresponding interfacial assembling techniques. Applications of these as-assembled architectures are also discussed in brief. We believe this review may shed light on the interfacial chemistry of MXenes, thus guiding more efficient fabrication of MXene-based functional films/coatings/electrodes/devices.

despite demonstrating exciting potential for applications such as drug delivery and biosensing,the development of nanodevices for practical applications and broader use in research and education are still hindered by the time,effort,and cost associated with dNA origami *** and robust methods to perform and scale the dNA origami self-assembly process are critical to facilitate broader use and translation to industrial or clinical *** report a simple approach to fold dNA origami nanostructures that is fast,robust,and *** demonstrate fabrication at scales approximately 100-1,500-fold higher than typical *** further demonstrate an approach we termed low-cost efficient annealing (LEAN) self-assembly involving initial heating at 65 ℃ for 10 min,then annealing at 51 ℃ for 2 h,followed by brief quenching at 4 ℃ that leads to effective assembly of a range of dNA origami structures *** contrast to other methods for scaling dNA origami assembly,this approach can be carried out using cheap and widely available equipment (e.g.,hot plates,water baths,and laboratory burners) and uses standard recipes and materials so is readily applied to any existing or new dNA origami *** envision these methods can facilitate device development for commercial applications and facilitate broader use of dNA origami in research and education.

Acetaminophen and zinc phosphide for lethal management of invasive lizards Ctenosaura similis

Reducing populations of invasive lizards through trapping and shooting is feasible in many cases but effective inte-grated management relies on a variety of tools, including toxicants. In Florida, using wild-caught non-native black spiny-tailed iguanas Ctenosaura similis, we screened acetaminophen and zinc phosphide to determine their suitability for effective population management of this prolific invasive species. Of the animals that received acetaminophen, none died except at the highest test dose, 240 mg per lizard, which is not practical for field use. Zinc phosphide produced 100% mortality at dose levels as little as 25 mg per lizard, equivalent to about 0.5% in bait which is lower than currently used in commercial baits for commensal rodent con-trol. We conclude that zinc phosphide has potential as a useful tool for reducing populations of invasive lizards such as the black spiny-tailed iguana provided target-selective delivery methods are developed [Current Zoology 57 （5）： 625~529, 2011].

Assessment of nutrients and conductivity in the Wachusett Reservoir watershed:An investigation of land use contributions and trends

The quality of drinking water for the Boston Metropolitan Area,supplied by the Quabbin-Wachusett system,is impacted by environmental *** objectives of this study are to increase understanding of the role that small streams may play in degradation of reservoir quality by characterizing seasonal constituent patterns from 1998 to 2020 in the Wachusett Reservoir watershed and by developing enhanced modeling *** monitoring(1998–2012)exhibited increased loads due to increasing flows despite declining solute *** present study analyzed seasonal nitrate(NO3)and total phosphorus(TP)concentration and load trends from 2012 to 2020 across 11 *** conductivity(SC)was also assessed to evaluate the impacts of road salt *** 2012 to 2020,statistical results for mean nutrient concentrations suggest static or declining temporal trends,while SC in all tributaries exhibited increasing *** use data suggest association with altered drainage landscapes as potential sources of increased constituent *** with the highest concentrations of TP,NO3,and SC have the largest percentage of impervious and cultivated areas,two to three times greater than other *** flows were modeled using the airGR hydrological model,subsequently used to calculate ***,flow magnitude was a more important load driver than long-term nutrient concentrations,thus,showing that stream discharge controlled load *** the other hand,persistently high SC levels controlled the increasing SC load ***,many nutrient reduction management strategies demonstrated an important impact from 1998 to *** watershed programs aimed at reducing salt applications,concentrations in streams are increasing,indicating a long-term legacy of salt *** smaller tributaries represent a modest portion of the system,addressing these sources has the potential to further reduce the long-term ecological

dear Editor, The patient is a 45-year-old male who presented to an outside clinic in 2014 for evaluation of painful ejaculation, infertility, and difficulty with urination for as long as he could remember. He reported no past significant medical or surgical history and no family history of infertility. He was given a trial of tamsulosin without improvement in his symptoms. Initial semen analysis demonstrated azoospermia.
