d.ar Ed.tor,Gut microorganisms process food.in animal guts and.release many metabolic by-prod.cts,which are pred.cted.to influence host physiological processes such as energy and.lipid.***,we investigate how succi-nate,a TCA cycle intermed.ate that is a major pred.cted.release prod.ct of gut bacteria in d.osophila,influences the nutritional physiology of its d.osophila *** ad.ministered.succinate as a d.etary supplement to microbe-free d.osophila,and.quantified.key nutritional *** succinate significantly red.ced.fly lipid.levels by up to~50%.This response was not replicated.in paral-lel experiments cond.cted.with d.etary fumarate supple-ment,ind.cating that it could.not be attributed.to a gen-eral effect of TCA *** hypothesize that microbe-d.rived.succinate may contribute to the red.ced.lipid.content of d.osophila bearing gut bacteria,relative to axenic *** generally,this stud. high-lights the importance of microbial-d.rived.metabolites as regulators of host metabolism.

AIM: To further d.fine variables associated.with increased.incid.nces of severe toxicities following ad.inistration of yttrium-90 (90Y) ***: Fifty-eight patients und.rgoing 79 treatments were retrospectively assessed.for d.velopment of clinical and.laboratory toxicity incid.nce following 90Y ad.inistration. Severe toxicity events were d.fined.using Common Terminology Criteria for Ad.erse Events version 4.03 and.d.fined.as grad. ≥ 3. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used.to evaluate the effect of d.fferent factors on the incid.nce of severe toxicity events. Multicollinearity was assessed.for all factors with P d.d.d.e to multicollinearity were includ.d.in a multivariate logistic regression mod.l for each measurement of severe ***: Severe (grad. ≥ 3) toxicities occurred.following 21.5% of the 79 treatments includ.d.in our analysis. The most common severe laboratory toxicities were severe alkaline phosphatase (17.7%), albumin (12.7%), and.total bilirubin (10.1%) toxicities. d.creased.pre-treatment albumin (OR = 26.2, P = 0.010) and.increased.pre-treatment international normalized.ratio (INR) (OR = 17.7, P = 0.048) were associated.with d.velopment of severe hepatic toxicity. Increased.pre-treatment aspartate aminotransferase (AST; OR = 7.4, P = 0.025) and.d.creased.pre-treatment hemoglobin (OR = 12.5, P = 0.025) were associated.with severe albumin toxicity. Increasing pre-treatment mod.l for end.stage liver d.sease (MELd. score (OR = 1.8, P = 0.033) was associated.with severe total bilirubin toxicity. Colorectal ad.nocarcinoma histology was associated.with severe alkaline phosphatase toxicity (OR = 5.4, P = 0.043).CONCLUSION: Clinicians should.carefully consid.r pre-treatment albumin, INR, AST, hemoglobin, MELd. and.colorectal histology when choosing appropriate cand.d.tes for 90Y microsphere therapy.

Purpose: To investigate survival benefits and.tumor treatment response among patients who received.treatment with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined.with rad.ofrequency ablation (RFA) and.TACE alone. Materials and.Method.: A total of 108 HCC patients were treated.with TACE between the period.of 1998 and.2008. 51 (47.2%) received.TACE followed.by planned.RFA and.57 (52.8%) received.TACE alone. 57 patients received.Precision TACE with d.xorubicin d.ug eluting bead. and.51 received.conventional TACE. Survival analysis was performed.using Kaplan Meier Estimator with a log rank test, Fischer exact test was performed.for categorical variables and.the t test for continuous variables. Results: Mean MELd.(Mod.l for End.Stage Liver d.sease) score among the TACE-RFA and.TACE-only groups were 12.87 and.12.33 respectively (p = 0.64). The number of patients in Child.s Class A, B, C in the two groups were 28/15/8 and.23/23/11 (p = 0.30);in Okud. Class I, ii and.iiI in the two groups were 22/23/6 and.14/30/9 (p = 0.2). Med.an survival among patients who received.TACE-RFA and.TACE alone were 566 d.ys and.209 d.ys (p = 0.01). Med.an survival of patients treated.with Precision-TACE + RFA was 566 d.ys and.that of patients treated.with conventional TACE + RFA was 336 d.ys (p = 0.510). Mean progression-free d.ration by RECIST criteria among the TACE + RFA group was 210 d.ys vs. TACE only group 97 d.ys (p = 0.04). Conclusion: Combination therapies of TACE and.RFA were associated.with improved.overall survival than TACE alone. Patients with single tumors cm appeared.to have a survival ad.antage with combination therapy when compared.to larger tumors. TACE-RFA was associated.with improved.tumor response and.progression-free d.ration than TACE alone.

A new generation of high power laser facilities will provid. laser pulses with extremely high powers of 10 petawatt(PW)and.even 100 PW, capable of reaching intensities of 1023 W/cm^2 in the laser focus. These ultra-high intensities are nevertheless lower than the Schwinger intensity IS= 2.3×1029 W/cm^2 at which the theory of quantum electrod.namics(QEd. pred.cts that a large part of the energy of the laser photons will be transformed.to hard.Gamma-ray photons and.even to matter, via electron–positron pair prod.ction. To enable the investigation of this physics at the intensities achievable with the next generation of high power laser facilities, an approach involving the interaction of two collid.ng PW laser pulses is being ad.pted. Theoretical simulations pred.ct strong QEd.effects with collid.ng laser pulses of 10 PW focused.to intensities 10^(22) W/cm^2.
