Materials-oriented integrated design and construction of structures in civil engineering—A review

Design is a goal-oriented planning activity for creating products,processes,and systems with desired functions through *** is a decision-making exploration:the design outcome may vary greatly depending on the designer’s knowledge and *** design is one type of design philosophy that takes an interdisciplinary and holistic *** civil engineering,structural design is such an activity for creating buildings and ***,structural design in many countries has emphasized a performance-based philosophy that simultaneously considers a structure’s safety,durability,serviceability,and ***,integrated design in civil engineering has become more popular,useful,and ***-oriented integrated design and construction of structures(MIDcS)combine materials engineering and structural engineering in the design stage:it fully utilizes the strengths of materials by selecting the most suitable structural forms and construction *** paper will explore real-world examples of MIDcS,including the realization of MIDcS in timber seismic-resistant structures,masonry arch structures,long-span steel bridges,prefabricated/on-site extruded light-weight steel structures,fiber-reinforced cementitious composites structures,and fiber-reinforced polymer bridge ***,advanced material design methods such as bioinspired design and structure construction technology of additive manufacturing are briefly reviewed and discussed to demonstrate how MIDcS can combine materials and structures.A unified strengthdurability design theory is also introduced,which is a human-centric,interdisciplinary,and holistic approach to the description and development of any civil infrastructure and includes all processes directly involved in the life cycle of the ***,this paper lays out future research directions for further development in the field.

Effect of L-theanine combined with geniposide on depression-like behavior induced by the chronic unpredictable mild stress(cUMS) in mice

Depression is a prevalent mental disorder with limited effective treatments， posing a significant global issue. This study explored L-theanine and geniposide， key components in "food-medicine homology" materials， to determine if their combination (TG) could alleviate depression-like behaviors and hippocampal neuronal damage in a chronic unpredictable mild stress (cUMS) mouse model. Male c57BL/6J mice were divided into control， cUMS model， and cUMS+TG groups with varying doses. The cUMS group displayed depression-like behaviors， including reduced activity and sucrose preference. TG treatment partially reversed these changes， significantly increasing antioxidant enzyme activities， decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokine levels， and improving neuromodulator levels. RNA-seq analysis identified the transthyretin (TTR) gene， upregulated in the model group but downregulated after TG treatment. TG treatment modulated intestinal microbiota composition compared to the cUMS group， including increased Firmicutes， reduced Bacteroidetes and Prevotella， and variable changes in Bifidobacterium abundance. In conclusion， our study indicates that cUMS exposure upregulates stress hormones and TTR expression， associated with neuroinflammation， oxidative stress， monoamine depletion， depression-like behaviors， and intestinal microbiota dysbiosis. TG treatment alleviates these effects and modulates intestinal microbiota， suggesting L-theanine and geniposide’s potential as a novel depression therapy.

An Improved Evolvable Oscillator and Basis Function Set for control of an Insect-Scale Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle

This paper introduces an improved evolvable and adaptive hardware oscillator design capable of supporting adaptation intended to restore control precision in damaged or imperfectly manufactured insect-scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles. It will also present preliminary experimental results demonstrating that previously used basis function sets may have been too large and that significantly improved learning times may be achieved by judiciously culling the oscillator search space. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the application of this adaptive, evolvable oscillator to full vehicle control as well as the consideration of longer term goals and requirements.

虽然已有许多水指数被运用于咸海和咸海流域的水域面积分析,然而已有研究尚存在很大的不确定性.由于所使用水指数存在水体误识别的问题,导致不同研究得出的结论差异很大.此外,各种研究采用的咸海流域面积也差异很大,流域面积从约1百万km^(2)到2百万km^(2)不等.因此,我们首先界定咸海流域、锡尔河和阿姆河流域以及它们的上、中、下游的边界,然后提出可识别液态水和固态水的四波段指数(ILSW),以解决传统水指数的误别偏差问题.ILSW基于绿色、红色、近红外和热红外波段反射值,是归一化差异水指数(NDWI)和地表温度(LST)的合成.验证结果显示,ILSW水指数在咸海流域的准确性远远超过其他指数.研究结果表明,南咸海的水域面积平均每年缩小963km^(2),而北咸海几乎没有变化;由于气候变暖,咸海流域上游常年冰雪面积有大幅度退缩趋势,阿姆河上游和锡尔河上游常年冰雪的退缩速率分别为年均6233和384km^(2)/a.气候变化和人类活动引起了严重的水亏问题.自20世纪90年代以来,水亏呈增长趋势,平均每年增长3.778亿m^(3).2011~2020年期间,整个咸海流域平均总水亏量为76.967亿m^(3),而锡尔河流域上游(咸海流域的一个组成部分)水盈余量为25.461亿m^(3).研究结果对制定咸海流域可持续发展战略具有重要意义.

If it had been suggested prior to the 1980s that the study of ice- that is, glaciology-would be the key to initiating international action on global climate change, most climate scientists would probably have laughed. However, that is exactly what occurred. The kick-start came from the Vostok ice core, a project that had been underway at the Soviet station at the Pole of Inaccessibility in East Antarctica since the 1970s. By the mid-1980s, the French were in close partnership with the Soviets.

Salicylic acid (SA) or 2-hydroxybenoic acid is a phenolic plant hormone that plays an essential role in plant defense against biotrophic and semi-biotrophic pathogens. In Arabidopsis, SA is synthesized from chorismate in the chloroplast through the IcS1 (isochorismate synthase I) pathway during pathogen infectioru The transcription co-activator NPR1 (Non-Expresser of Pathogenesis-Related Gene 1), as the master regulator of SA signaling, interacts with transcription factors to induce the expression of anti-microbial PR (Pathogenesis-Related) genes. To establish successful in fections, plant bacterial, oomycete, fun gal, and viral pathogens have evolved at least three major strategies to disrupt SA-mediated defense? The first strategy is to reduce SA accumulation directly by converting SA into its inactive derivatives. The second strategy is to interrupt SA biosynthesis by targeting the IcS1 pathway. In the third major strategy, plant pathogens deploy different mechanisms to interfere with SA downstream signaling. The wide array of strategies deployed by plant pathogens highlights the crucial role of disruption of SA-mediated plant defense in plant pathogenesis. A deeper understanding of this topic will greatly expand our knowledge of how plant pathogens cause diseases and consequently pave the way for the development of more effective ways to corn trol these diseases.

An electrochemical process that uses an Fe^0/TiO2 cathode to degrade typical dyes and antibiotics and a bio-anode that produces electricity

In this study a new water treatment system that couples （photo-） electrochemical catalysis （PEc or Ec） in a microbial fuel cell （MFc） was configured using a stainless-steel （SS） cathode coated w th Fe / TiO2. We examined the destruction of methylene blue （MB） and tetracycline. Fe^0/TiO2 was prepared using a chemical reduction-deposition method and coated onto an SS wire mesh （500 mesh） using a sol technique. The anode generates electricity using microbes （bio-anode）. connected via wire and ohmic resistance, the system requires a short reaction time and operates at a low cost by effectively remowng 94% MB （initial concentration 20 mg·L^-1） and 83% TOc/TOco under visible light illumination （50 W; 1.99 mW·cm^-2 for 120 rain, MFc-PEc）. The removal was similar even without light irradiation （MFc-Ec）. The EEo of the MFc-PEc system was approximately 0.675 kWh·m^-3. order-l whereas that of the MFc-Ec system was zero. The system was able to remove 70% cOD in tetracycline solution （initial tetracycline concentration 100 mg·L^-1） after 120 min of visible light illumination; without light, the removal was 15% lower. The destruction of MB and tetracycline in both traditional photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis systems was notably low. The electron spinresonance spectroscopy （ESR） study demonstrated that. OH was formed under visible light, and. 02 was formed without light. The bio-electricity-activated O2 and ROS （reactive oxidizing species） generation by Fe^0/TiO2 effectively degraded the pollutants. This cathodic degradation improved the electricity generation by accepting and consuming more electrons from the bio-anode.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease and severe obesity:Fundoplication or bariatric surgery?

Increases in the prevalence of obesity and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) have paralleled one another over the past decade, which suggests the possibility of a linkage between these two processes. In both instances, surgical therapy is recognized as the most effective treatment for severe, refractory disease. current surgical therapies for severe obesity include (in descending frequency) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, while fundoplication remains the mainstay for the treatment of severe GERD. In several large series, however, the outcomes and durability of fundoplication in the setting of severe obesity are not as good as those in patients who are not severely obese. As such, bariatric surgery has been suggested as a potential alternative treatment for these patients. This article reviews current concepts in the putative pathophysiological mechanisms by which obesity contributes to gastroesophageal reflux and their implications with regards to surgical therapy for GERD in the setting of severe obesity.

Key findings of the 2016 symposium on the frontiers of chemical science and engineering： Environment and sustainable development

There were 30 speakers and the proceedings contained 28 abstracts that discussed the start-of-the art applications of sustainable chemical engineering [1]. We summarized topics that were discussed in the 28 abstracts using the non-negative matrix factorization （NMF） algorithm. The ＂topics＂ were synthesized without reading the abstracts. Here we will not discuss the algorithm of NMF in detail because of the space limitation and please refer to references for the description of NMF [2,3]. Topic modeling will be more valuable as the number of the abstracts increases.

How media empower the vulnerable: Using community structure theory to analyze relationships between demographics and health reporting

Instead of studying the impact of media on society,the traditional"top down"orientation of most communication studies scholars,this keynote presentation adopted the opposite perspective,exploring the"bottom-up"impact of"society"on"media".Unlike conventional"agenda-setting theory",which suggests that nationally prominent news media set issue"agendas"for other news media and public opinion,and also unlike the"guard dog"view that media essentially protect the interests of political and economic elites,the"community structure theory"explores links between different community(typically city or nation-state)demographics and variations in reporting on critical health *** his scholarship on health communication presented and published over decades,the speaker outlined community structure theory's illumination of two overall patterns in US and cross-national coverage of health communication *** US coverage,broad measures of economically"buffered"privilege(educational,income,or occupational advantage)are linked to"favorable"or"government responsibility"coverage of health issues,and specific measures of"health"privilege(physicians,hospitals)are connected to"favorable"or"government responsibility"coverage promoting selected health *** cross-national coverage,specific measures of national"health vulnerability"(such as percent without improved water access,infant mortality rate)are linked to"government"responsibility coverage for selected health issues(human trafficking,water handling/contamination).In addition,broad measures of"macro"vulnerability conditions(agricultural dependence,political instability)are associated with"government"responsibility coverage for a wide range of health issues(genetically modified foods,drug trafficking,condom promotion,and food security).Overall,community structure theory's"bottom up"perspective reveals how the vulnerable are empowered by their demographic alignment with variations in health communication.
