b.oenergy Crops as a Promising Alternative to Fossil Fuels in Louisiana: A Geographic Information System (GIS) Perspective

Rising greenhouse gas emissions are causing climate change, and the world’s focus has shifted to the need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. There has b.en a rise in the pub.ished literature on the utilization of crops for b.oenergy production in Louisiana. However, very few scholarly documents have used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the distrib.tion of potential b.oenergy crops in Louisiana. This study seeks to fill the void b. evaluating the potential of b.oenergy crops in Louisiana for energy production using GIS. Given this ob.ective, the agricultural census data for 1999, 2009, 2019, and 2020 ob.ained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture were used in the analysis. The quantities of various crops produced in the state were loaded into an attrib.te tab.e and joined to a shapefile using ArcGIS software. The symb.logy tool’s graduated option was used to create five maps representing each of the b.oenergy crops in Louisiana. The findings of the GIS analysis show that some of the parishes, such as Franklin produced the most b.shels of corn (13,795,416), Ib.ria produced the most tons of sugarcane (1,697,980), East Carroll produced the most b.shels of soyb.an (8,237,991), Tensas harvested the most b.les of cotton (80,898) and Avoyelles produced the most b.shels of sorghum (630,694). The ab.ndance and availab.lity of crops as raw materials for energy production will translate into lower prices in terms of energy use, making b.oenergy crops a promising alternative to fossil fuels. In addition, gasoline price data from 1993-2022 was ob.ained from U.S. Energy Information Administration. A regression model for the average annual gasoline price over the years was constructed. The results show that the average annual gasoline price variation with respect to years is statistically significant (p 0.05). Can a multistage approach improve individual tree mortality predictions across the complex mixed-species and managed forests of eastern North America?

Tree mortality plays a fundamental role in the dynamics of forest ecosystems,yet it is one of the most difficult phenomena to accurately *** modeling strategies have b.en developed to improve individual tree mortality *** less explored strategy is the use of a multistage modeling *** improvements from this approach have remained largely *** this study,we developed a novel multistage approach and compared its performance in individual tree mortality predictions with a more conventional approach using an identical individual tree mortality model *** permanent plot data(n=9442)covering the Acadian Region of North America and over multiple decades(1965–2014)were used in this *** results indicated that the model b.havior with the multistage approach b.tter depicted the ob.erved mortality and showed a notab.e improvement over the conventional *** difference b.tween the ob.erved and predicted numb.rs of dead trees using the multistage approach was much smaller when compared with the conventional *** addition,tree survival prob.b.lities predicted b. the multistage approach generally were not significantly different from the ob.ervations,whereas the conventional approach consistently underestimated mortality across species and overestimated tree survival prob.b.lities over the large range of Db. in the *** new multistage approach also predictions of zero mortality in individual plots,a result not possib.e in conventional ***,the new approach was more tolerant of modeling errors b.cause it b.sed estimates on ranked tree mortality rather than error-prone predicted ***,this new multistage approach deserves to b. considered and tested in future studies.

The fields of b.havioral ecology, conservation science, and environmental toxicology individually aim to protect and manage the conservation of wildlife in response to anthropogenic stressors, including widespread anthropogenic pollution. Although great emphasis in the field of toxicology has b.en placed on understanding how single pollutants affect survival, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach that includes b.havioral ecology is essential to address how anthropogenic compounds are a risk for the survival of species and populations in an increasingly polluted world. We provide an integrative framework for b.havioral ecotoxicology using Tinb.rgen's four postulates (causation and mechanism, development and ontogeny, function and fitness, and evolutionary history and phylogenetic patterns). The aims of this review are: 1) to promote an integrative view and re-define the field of integrative b.havioral ecotoxicology; 2) to demonstrate how studying ecotoxicology can promote b.havior research; and 3) to identify areas of b.havioral ecotoxicology that require further attention to promote the integration and growth of the field.
