Developm.nt of diabetic cataract is m.inly associated with the accum.lation of sorbitol via the polyol pathway through the action of Aldose reductase(AR).Hence,AR inhibitors are considered as potential agents in the m.nagem.nt of diabetic *** study explored the AR inhibition potential of Hem.desm.s indicus *** root extract by in silico and ex vivo *** docking studies(Auto Dock tool)betweenβ-sitosterol,hem.desm.nine,hem.desm.n-1,hem.desm.n-2,and AR showed thatβ-sitosterol(−10.2 kcal/m.l)and hem.desm.n-2(−8.07 kcal/m.l)had the strongest affinity to AR *** vivo studies were perform.d by incubating isolated goat lenses in artificial aqueous hum.r using galactose(55 m.)as cataract inducing agent at room.tem.erature(pH 7.8)for 72 *** treatm.nt with Vitam.n E acetate−100μg/m.(standard)and test extract(500 and 1000μg/m.)separately,the estim.tion of biochem.cal m.rkers showed inhibition of lens AR activity and decreased sorbitol ***,extract also norm.lized the levels of antioxidant m.rkers like SOD,CAT,*** results showed evidence that *** *** root was able to prevent cataract by prevention of opacification and form.tion of polyols that underlines its potential as a possible therapeutic agent against diabetic com.lications.

AIm. To study the effectiveness of Reitm.n Centre "Coaching, Advocacy, Respite, Education, Relationship, and Sim.lation"(CARERS) program. which uses problem.solving techniques and sim.lation to train inform.l dem.ntia carers. m.THODS: Seventy-three carers for fam.ly m.m.ers with dem.ntia were included in the pilot study. Preand post-intervention data were collected from.carers using validated m.asures of depression, m.stery, role captivity and overload, caregiving com.etence and burden, and coping styles. To assess program.effec-tiveness, m.an differences for these m.asures were calculated. One-way ANOVA was used to determ.ne if change in scores is dependent on the respective baseline scores. Clinical effects for m.asures were expressed as Cohen's D values. RESULTS: Data from.73 carers were analyzed. The m.jority of these participants were fem.le(79.5%). A total of 69.9% were spouses and 30.1% were children of the care recipient. Participants had an overall m.an age of 68.34 ± 12.01 years. About 31.5% of participating carers had a past history of psychiatric illness(e.g., depression), and 34.2% sustained strained relationships with their respective care recipients. Results from.carers dem.nstrated im.rovem.nt in carers' selfperception of com.etence(1.26 ± 1.92, P m.tion-focused coping(m.asured by the Coping Inventory of Stressful Situations,-2.37 ± 6.73, P m.letion of the Program. Secondly, it was found that carers with m.re com.rom.sed baseline scores benefited m.st from.the intervention, as they experienced statistically significant im.rovem.nt in the following constructs: com.etence, stress-coping style(less em.tion-oriented), sense of m.stery, burden, overload. CONCLUSION: Study results supported the effectiveness of the CARERS Program.in im.roving caregiving com.etence, stress coping ability and m.ntal

Com.unity Structures of Phytoplankton with Em.hasis on Toxic Cyanobacteria in an Ohio Inland Lake during Bloom.Season

The com.unity structures of phytoplankton are im.ortant factors and indicators of lake water quality. Harm.ul algal bloom. severely im.act water supply, recreational activities and wildlife habitat. This study aim.d to exam.ne the phytoplankton com.osition and variations using m.croscopy, and identify harm.ul Cyanobacteria in weekly sam.les taken from.four sites at Harsha Lake in southwest Ohio. Over the course of the sum.er in 2015, the phytoplankton of Harsha Lake consisted m.inly of 13 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cryptophyta, Cyanobacteria, Dinophyta and Euglenophyta. Their significant successions started with Bacillariophyta and/or Chlorophyta, then bloom.d with Cyanobacteria and ended with Chlorophyta and/or Dinophyta. Cyanobacteria m.m.ers: m.crocystis, Planktothrix, Dolichosperm.m. Aphanizom.non, Cylindrosperm.psis, and Oscillatoria from.the Cyanophyceae were identified to be dom.nant genera. These organism. varied spatially and tem.orally in sim.lar patterns along with the variations of nutrients and form.d the sum.er bloom.with the total biom.sses ranging from.0.01 to 114.89 m. L-1 with m.an of 22.88 m. L-1. m. aeruginosa and P. rubescens were revealed as the m.crocystin producers, while A. circinalis and Aphanizom.non sp. were identified as a saxitoxin producer through cloning and sequencing PCR products of m.yA, m.yE and sxtA genes. The biom.sses of phytoplankton, Cyanobacteria and m.crocystis were positively correlated to nutrients, especially to total nitrogen. The total ELISA m.asurem.nt for m.crocystin positively correlated with Cyanobacteria (R2 = 0.66, P m.crocystis (R2 = 0.64, P 2 = 0.59, P m.tion on the occurrence and biom.sses of Cyanobacteria and total phytoplankton, and the analysis for toxic species, which were the first report for the inland water in Ohio, USA, will docum.nt the succession patterns of phytoplankton and toxin production over a season and provide data to predict risk occurrence to b

The Effect of Sm.ll Scale Topographic Gradient on the Distribution and Com.unity Utilization of Indigenous Woody Species in a Lowland Dryland Environm.nt, Lokapel Area, Turkana, Kenya

The landscape of Lokapel is characterized by a distinctive dryland vegetation, whose distribution is influenced by altitudinal change and the use of woody species by the local com.unity along 100 m.altitudinal gradient from.River Turkwel (662 m. to Lokapel Hill (764 m.. The paper undertakes the following: (a) to establish the influence of elevation on woody vegetation species distribution in different landscapes in the area and (b) to assess the consum.tive and non-consum.tive uses of woody vegetation in the area by the local com.unity and determ.ne the utility patterns along the altitudinal gradient. A total of forty three species of woody plants were identified with the top five species in term. of widespread distribution being;Indigofera cliffordearia (10 percent), Acacia tortilis (9.8 percent), A. nubica (8.8 percent), Balanites rotundifolia (6.3 percent), and Acacia reficiens (5.4 percent). The local people used the indigenous woody species to address a total of 18 dem.nds including provision of livestock fodder, household construction, bio-energy, and herbal m.dicines. The variation in woody species and their uses showed the total num.er of woody species distribution has the highest peak around 680 m.but altitude accounted only for 51 percent of the variation in woody species.

Assessm.nt of m.lti-m.dality evaluations of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding

AIm.o determ.ne the frequency of bleeding source detection in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) who underwent double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) after pre-procedure im.ging [m.ltiphase com.uted tom.graphy enterography (m.CTE), video capsule endoscopy (VCE), or both] and assess the im.act of im.ging on DBE diagnostic *** cohort study using a prospectively m.intained database of all adult patients presenting with OGIB who underwent DBE from.Septem.er 1st, 2002 to June 30th, 2013 at a single tertiary *** hundred and ninety five patients (52% fem.les; m.dian age 68 years) underwent DBE for OGIB. AVCE and/or m.CTE perform.d within 1 year prior to DBE (in 441 patients) increased the diagnostic yield of DBE (67.1% with preceding im.ging vs 59.5% without). Using DBE as the gold standard, VCE and m.CTE had a diagnostic yield of 72.7% and 32.5% respectively. There were no increased odds of finding a bleeding site at DBE com.ared to VCE (OR = 1.3, P = 0.150). There were increased odds of finding a bleeding site at DBE com.ared to m.CTE (OR = 5.9, P m.nt of OGIB, with a diagnostic yield that m.y be increased after obtaining a preceding VCE or m.CTE. However, inpatients with active ongoing bleeding m.y benefit from.proceeding directly to antegrade DBE.

Intergenic subset organization within a set of geographically-defined viral sequences from.the 2009 H1N1 influenza A pandem.c

We report a bioinform.tic analysis of the datasets of sequences of all ten genes from.the 2009 H1N1 influenza A pandem.c in the state of Wisconsin. The gene with the greatest sum.ed inform.tion entropy was found to be the hem.gglutinin (HA) gene. Based upon the viral ID identifier of the HA gene sequence, the sequences of all of the genes were sorted into two subsets, depending upon whether the nucleotide occupying the position of m.xim.m.entropy, position 658 of the HA sequence, was either A or U. It was found that the inform.tion entropy (H) distributions of subsets differed significantly from.each other, from.H distributions of random.y generated subsets and from.the H distributions of the com.lete datasets of each gene. m.tual inform.tion (m.) values facilitated identification of nine nucleotide positions, distributed over seven of the influenza genes, at which the nucleotide subsets were disjoint, or alm.st disjoint. Nucleotide frequencies at these nine positions were used to com.ute m.tual inform.tion values that subsequently served as weighting factors for edges in a graph net-work. Seven of the nucleotide positions in the graph network are sites of synonym.us m.tations. Three of these sites of synonym.us m.tation are within a single gene, the m. gene, which occupied the position of greatest graph centrality. It is proposed that these bioinform.tic and network graph results m.y reflect alterations in m.-m.diated viral packaging and exteriorization, known to be susceptible to synonym.us m.tations.
