Mild closed head traumatic brain injury-induced changes in monoamine neurotransmitters in the trigeminal subnuclei of a rat model:mechanisms underlying orofacial allodynias and headache

Our recent findings have demonstrated that rodent models of closed head traumatic brain injury exhibit comprehensive evidence of progressive and enduring orofacial allodynias, a hypersensitive pain response induced by non-painful stimulation. These allodynias, tested using thermal hyperalgesia, correlated with changes in several known pain signaling receptors and molecules along the trigeminal pain pathway, especially in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis. This study focused to extend our previous work to investigate the changes in monoamine neurotransmitter immunoreactivity changes in spinal trigeminal nucleus oralis, pars interpolaris and nucleus tractus solitaries following mild to moderate closed head traumatic brain injury, which are related to tactile allodynia, touch-pressure sensitivity, and visceral pain. Our results exhibited significant alterations in the excitatory monoamine, serotonin, in spinal trigeminal nucleus oralis and pars interpolaris which usually modulate tactile and mechanical sensitivity in addition to the thermal sensitivity. Moreover, we also detected a robust alteration in the expression of serotonin, and inhibitory molecule norepinephrine in the nucleus tractus solitaries, which might indicate the possibility of an alteration in visceral pain, and existence of other morbidities related to solitary nucleus dysfunction in this rodent model of mild to moderate closed head traumatic brain injury. Collectively, widespread changes in monoamine neurotransmitter may be related to orofacial allodynhias and headache after traumatic brain injury.

Molecular study on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from dogs and associated personnel in Jordan

Objective: To determine the prevalence, genetic relatedness, and pattern of antimicrobial susceptibility in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus)(MRSA) isolated from household dogs, farm dogs, and stray dogs, compared to isolates from their associated ***: MRSA was isolated from 250 nasal swabs(150 swabs from dogs and 100 swabs from humans). PCR assays were used to detect the presence of both the nuc and mec A genes,which con firmed the identity of S. aureus isolates and the presence of methicillin resistance,respectively. Disk diffusion was used to determine the antibiotic susceptibility against 15 antimicrobial agents along with an E-test that determined the minimum inhibitory concentration for oxacillin. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis was conducted to determine the genetic relatedness of MRSA isolates from dogs to those from associated and unassociated ***: The prevalence of S. aureus in dogs and humans was 12.7% and 10.0%respectively, while the prevalence of MRSA isolates in dogs and humans was 5.3% and5.0%, respectively. The prevalence of MRSA isolates in household dogs, farm dogs, and stray dogs was 7.8%, 4.7%, and 0.0%, respectively. MRSA isolates demonstrated a significantly higher rate of multi-resistance against three or more antimicrobial agents than methicillin-susceptible S. aureus(MSSA). Trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole and chloramphenicol were the most effective antibiotics against all MRSA isolates. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis revealed a strong association between dog MRSA isolates and MRSA isolates from strongly associated ***: MRSA is prevalent in house dogs, as well as in dog rearing centers and among their strongly associated personnel. A strong association was found between the MRSA isolates from dogs and those from humans who are in close contact. In addition,MRSA isolates showed a high rate of multi-resistance compared to MSSA isolates.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic, and in Vitro Cytotoxic Studies of Fatty Acid Analogues of 2, 6-Diisopropylphenol

This paper represents the synthesis, spectral analysis and in-vitro cytotoxic studies of some novel fatty acid anti-cancer conjugates of 2, 6-diisopropylphenol (propofol). Propofol is a potent intravenous hypnotic agent which is widely used for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia and for sedation in the intensive care unit. Propofol also possess anti-cancer properties in addition to its sedative effects. Cytotoxicity of all the synthesized compounds was examined against human HeLa cancer cell lines. The anti-cancer screening of these novel drug candidates suggest that all of them reported here may be useful for the treatment of cancer as all of them exhibited significant anticancer activity against human HeLa cancer cell lines. The results indicate that these novel drug candidates might represent a new class of anticancer agents.

Characteristics, management, and outcome of squamous carcinoma of the conjunctiva in a single tertiary cancer center in Jordan

AIM： To evaluate the features and outcome of management of malignant conjunctival squamous tumors in King Hussein Cancer Center（a referral tertiary cancer center in the Middle East）. METHODS： Retrospective case series of 31 eyes for 31 patients with conjunctival squamous neoplasia. Main outcome measures included： age, gender, laterality, tumor location, pathological features, tumor stage, treatment modality, and outcome. RESULTS： Twenty（65%） patients were males and median age was 58 y. Twenty-two（71%） eyes had the tumor in the nasal quadrant. Tumor invasion to nearby structures was seen in 19（61%） eyes, including the cornea, fornix, eyelid, and orbit in 17（55%）, 1（3%）, 2（6%）, and 3（10%） eyes, respectively. Eye salvage was achieved by surgical excision with cryotherapy followed by topical chemotherapy in 28（90%） eyes, and orbital exenteration was necessary in 3（10%） eyes due to orbital tumor invasion. Tumor recurrence was seen in 7（23%） eyes, and the significant predictive factors for recurrence were tumor extension onto the nearby structures（P=0.04）, tumor invasiveness（P=0.038）, and tumor TNM stage（P=0.031）. No significant change in visual acuity was seen, and disease related mortality was 6%（2 patients, both had orbital invasion by invasive squamous carcinoma）. CONCLUSION： Conjunctival squamous carcinoma is more common in males. Advanced American Joint Committee on Cancer（AJCC） T-stage, tumor local invasion, more pathologically aggressive tumors, and surgical treatment alone（without adjuvant therapy） are associated with higher risk for recurrence, and orbital invasion is the most important poor prognostic factor for metastasis and death. Treatment strategies should be affected by tumor characteristics at presentation.

本文以朱湘的疏离感为主要研究对象。我从三个方面来进行分析：第一个方面比较客观,更多的阐述了朱湘在现实生活中所遭遇过的一些悲剧的事件,而如何“负面地”影响到了诗人的思维、如何形成了他的孤僻后来变得孤傲的性格,于是使得他渐渐疏离于人世,渴望去另一个理想的国度。第二个方面则是比较主观的,就是诗人的形而上的精神焦虑,这主要阐述了诗人对于“生”与“死”的具有强烈的组合性与不确定性的形而上的观点与理解。这能够使读者联想到许多苏菲派神秘主义诗人如“鲁米”和“本.阿拉比”等等。从朱湘的作品中,能看出他是边缘诗人、焦虑诗人、精美诗人与悲剧诗人的别致组合。第三个方面,主要阐述了诗人的丰富的想象、复活古代的愿望、沉醉于美的境界里、以及对与“永恒”的自然“一体化”的欲望等等。这些特点都似乎在暗示着读者,这是诗人解脱痛苦所用的工具,也是他的唯一的逃避方式。

A Comparative Survey on Arabic Stemming: Approaches and Challenges

Arabic, as one of the Semitic languages, has a very rich and complex morphology, which is radically different from the European and the East Asian languages. The derivational system of Arabic, is therefore, based on roots, which are often inflected to compose words, using a spectacular and a relatively large set of Arabic morphemes affixes, e.g., antefixs, prefixes, suffixes, etc. Stemming is the process of rendering all the inflected forms of word into a common canonical form. Stemming is one of the early and major phases in natural processing, machine translation and information retrieval tasks. A number of Arabic language stemmers were proposed. Examples include light stemming, morphological analysis, statistical-based stemming, N-grams and parallel corpora (collections). Motivated by the reported results in the literature, this paper attempts to exhaustively review current achievements for stemming Arabic texts. A variety of algorithms are discussed. The main contribution of the paper is to provide better understanding among existing approaches with the hope of building an error-free and effective Arabic stemmer in the near future.

Energy Auditing and Improvement Scheme for Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at Taibah University

In this work, a survey is used to investigate the current energy performance for Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences (previously Faculty of Engineering) at Taibah University in Medina city. The results of the survey show that several factors affect the energy performance in this building. It revealed that the building has been poorly designed from the point of view of thermal performance. Therefore, the building energy consumption needs to be monitored and maintained through energy auditing program. To determine the energy profile, the power consumption was calculated;the cooling load was estimated and analyzed to know the actual capacity required. The level of comfort in the building has been evaluated. Against the installed air conditioning capacity of 200-ton refrigeration, the cooling load calculations showed that the maximum cooling load needed, which is in August is only 83.22-ton refrigeration. In addition, illumination levels were measured and compared to the standard levels. Based on obtained results, two solutions were proposed: to install a building management system with approximate cost of 337,904 SR and to replace the existing chiller. Finally, the payback period for the proposed system has been estimated and found to be about 5.4 years.

The Effect of Carbon Rod—Specimens Distance on the Structural and Electrical Properties of Carbon Nanotube

The research studies the effect of the distance between the sample and the plasma sputtering source on the properties of the junction (silicon wafer-carbon nanotubes). The silicon wafer is fixed at (near, medium and far distances from the plasma source which is in the form of high purity graphite rod heated electrically). For the three cases, thickness of the sample is constant (20 nm). The samples were studied by scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force microscopes (AFM), X-ray and Raman spectra. For optimum distances the carbon layer is in the form of multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT). SEM images shows no formation of CNT on the Si wafer for near distance, which is consistent with the AFM images, X-ray and Raman spectrograms and no existence of characteristics (002) peaks whereas it appears for medium and longer distances, and by experience the optimum distance was found. This means that at closer distance high energy and high intensity plasma particles prevent the formation of CNT. This effect decreases with increasing distance of substrate from the graphite rod.

Prevalence and outcome of acute kidney injury,as defined by the new Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guideline,in very low birth weight infants

AIM To evaluate the prevalence, risk factors and outcome of acute kidney injury(AKI) in very low birth weight(VLBW) infants. METHODS In this retrospective study of VLBW infants, we analyzed the prevalence of AKI, as defined by changes in serum creatinine and urine output, associated risk factors and *** A total of 293 VLBW infants(mean gestational age 28.7 wk) were included, of whom 109 weighed less than 1000 g at birth. The overall prevalence of AKI was 11.6%(22% in infants with a birth weight under 1000 g and 5.4% those heavier). A total of 19(55%) affected infants died, with a mortality rate of 58% in infant less than 1000 g and 50% in those heavier. After adjusting for confounding variables, only necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC) remained associated with AKI, with odds ratio of 4.9(95%CI: 1.9-18.6). Blood pressure and glomerular filtration rate(GFR) were not different between affected infants and the others upon discharge from hospital. A normal GFR was documented in all affected infants at one year of *** Using Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes definition of AKI, it occurred in over 10% of VLBW infants,more commonly in infants with lower birth weight. NEC was an independent associated risk factor. Renal function, as defined by GFR, was normal in all surviving affected infants 10 to 12 mo later.
