Initial medication adherence in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients:three adherence measures

AIM:To determine initial medication adherence in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients treated with anti-glaucoma ***:This retrospective and observational study included all patients diagnosed with glaucoma in the Primary Health Care units in Portugal during the years 2012 and 2013,which in consequence received a first prescription for anti-glaucoma *** was collected from electronic prescribing records of the primary care units and from pharmacy claims *** of glaucoma treatment and early discontinuation were measured,and the combination of(non)-initiation and early discontinuation accounted for initial medication(non)-***:A total of 3548 new glaucoma patients(40.1%male;59.9%female)were *** 1133(31.9%)patients were initially classified as non-users,since there was no pharmacy claim found for their first prescription for glaucoma ***,277(11.5%)patients early discontinued their treatment,acquiring only their first ***,the initial medication non-adherence rate was 39.7%since 1410 patients either didn’t initiate treatment or discontinued it ***:This study,reveals a major opportunity to improve glaucoma treatment and its control,since a large proportion of patients fail to engage with their prescribed therapy,which implies that implementation of individual or group strategies that enable patients with glaucoma to correctly perform their treatment is still needed.

Characterization of Acoustical Worship Heritage in Schmerzhaften Mutter Gottes, Vilgertshofen-Germany

The dynamics between sound decay and soundscape determines the acoustical worship heritage in a worship space that needs to be conserved along interventions in *** soundscape of Schmerzhaften Mutter Gottes,Vilgertshofen was measured by derived Acoustical Worship Parameters:Sacred Awe(SAWE),Sacred Intelligibility(SINT),and Sacred Silence(SSIL)for“TOCCATA”of Johann Sebastian Bach rendered on the pipe *** sound energy decay in the church,conducted from two sources:choir loft and altar,generated acoustical monaural measures(RT60,EDT,D50,C80,TS,STI,Leq)in accordance with *** Reverberation Time(RT60)spectral analysis and Loudness(Leq)positional analysis showed the church to be more reverberant for the impulse from the altar location on the sanctuary floor and optimally loud for the impulse from the pipe-organ location on the ***,SINT and SSIL significantly related with subjective acoustical quality of Balance(SAQBAL)and Loudness(Leq)(p≤0.05).SAQBAL showed positive correlation with rapid speech transmission index(RASTI)(p=0.18).

Short communication: Supplementing with vitamin E may alter the fibrinolytic capacity of cattle

Vitamin E supplementation has been reported to decrease the incidence of cystic ovarian disease (COD) and retained placenta (RP) in cattle however the mechanism of action is not known. In humans, vitamin E supplementation twofold the daily requirements decreases plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity. As proteolysis may be involved in both COD and RP, vitamin E may be reducing these disorders in cattle through its effects on PAI-1. To evaluate the effects of vitamin E on plasma PAI-1 activity in cattle, six non-lactating beef cows (n = 3 per treatment) were injected with 0 (Control) or 2750 IU of vitamin E (Vitamin E) IM once every four days for 24 days (Day 0 = first day of treatment). Blood samples were collected every two days for 28 days starting on Day 0 and plasma PAI-1 and tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) concentrations and activities were determined. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed due to vitamin E supplementation in plasma PAI-1 and tPA concentrations and activities or concentrations and activities adjusted relative to the Day 0 value for each cow. Day of treatment was a significant effect in all tPA measurements. The ratio of adjusted PAI-1 to tPA concentrations did not differ (P > 0.05) due to vitamin E supplementation however the ratio of PAI-1 to tPA activity tended to be greater (P = 0.097) in Control compared to Vitamin E cows (1.0 ± 0.1 and 0.7 ± 0.1, respectively). These data suggest vitamin E supplementation may contribute to the reduced incidence of COD and RP in cattle by shifting the ratio of plasma PAI-1 to tPA activity to a state favoring proteolysis.

Measurement of Metabolic and Inflammatory Serum Markers and Immune Marker Gene Expression during Superovulation in Beef Cattle

Health status of donor cows during superovulation is important to ensure optimal embryo quality at time of collection. Because nutritional and metabolic status impact embryo quality some form of nutritional supplementation is often provided before and during superovulation. OmniGen-AF® (OG) feeding has been shown to assist in the maintenance of animal health through regulation of metabolic status and balance and supporting aspects of immune function. We observed feeding donor cows OG decreased percent degenerate embryos recovered following superovulation increased serum progesterone concentration and improved in vitro embryo development. Evaluation of OG feeding on markers of metabolic function and inflammatory and immune function in beef cattle embryo donors are reported here. Similarly, cow metabolic and inflammatory response with repeated superovulation protocols is not known. Biomarkers to monitor and evaluate cow health during superovulation may provide management options to improve embryo recovery and quality. Twenty-four Angus cross-bred cattle were randomly assigned to four treatment groups, fed 0 or 56 g/hd/day for 49 days and superovulated with 200 or 400 mg Folltropin V (FSH). Blood was collected weekly for analyses. The protocol was repeated on all cows 90 - 120 d later with cows reassigned to their original groups. No differences (P > 0.10) were observed due to OG feeding or FSH dose on metabolic and inflammatory markers. Matrix Metalloproteinases and Tissue Inhibitors of Matrix Metalloproteinases as Plasma Indicators of Bovine Cystic Ovarian Disease

Cystic ovarian disease (COD) is one of the main causes of infertility in dairy cattle and has a high economic impact on farmers. COD is caused by an endocrine imbalance within the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis preventing the mature Graafian follicle from ovulating. The cause at the molecular level is not well understood. However, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and plasminogen activator/plasmin families of extracellular (ECM) matrix-degrading proteinases are involved in Graafian follicle breakdown and oocyte release in the ovulation process. Our research investigated the possibility of using plasma concentrations of MMP-2 and -9 and their natural tissue inhibitors (TIMP) -1 and -2 as prognostic indicators of COD. Plasma samples from cystic and non-cystic dairy cows were analyzed using ELISA. Although plasma concentrations of MMP-2 and -9 were greater and TIMP-2 was lower in non-cystic compared to cystic cows, no significant differences were observed in MMP-2 and -9 and TIMP-1 and -2 due to cyst status. However, the TIMP-1:MMP-9 and TIMP-2:MMP-2 molar ratios were greater, (P = 0.099) and (P = 0.038), respectively, in cystic compared to non-cystic cows, suggesting a proteolytic insufficiency in cows with COD that may be a contributing factor to the anovulatory pathology. These data may provide the groundwork for future research and development of tools for dairy farmers to selectively choose replacement heifers less likely to develop COD.

Effects of Feeding OmniGen-AF<sup>®</sup>during Superovulation on <i>in Vitro</i>Development of Embryos Recovered from Donor Beef Cows

Embryo quality is crucial when selecting embryos for transfer. Variation in quality may be attributed to poor oocytes, semen, stress, inflammation, and potential immune system dysregulation. OmniGen-AF® (OG) feeding supports immune system function and animal health. Our laboratory recently reported lower percent degenerate embryos recovered and increased plasma progesterone in beef cattle donors fed OG during superovulation. In vitro development of embryos recovered from donor cows fed OG prior to collection is presented here. Embryos were recovered from 24 beef cows assigned to four treatment groups: 0 g OG/hd/d and 200 mg Folltropin®-V (FSH) (0/200);0 g OG/hd/d and 400 mg FSH (0/400), 56 g OG/hd/d, 200 mg FSH (56/200) and 56 g OG/hd/d and 400 mg FSH (56/400). Good to excellent quality early blastocysts were cultured for 8 d. and development through hatching, embryonic volume and plasminogen activator (PA) production were quantified. The complete protocol was repeated 90 - 120 d later as Replicate 2. Aims Understanding succession in tropical forest is an important aspect of vegetation science,but to date,successional processes in sea-sonally dry tropical forests(SDtFs)have received much less atten-tion than evergreen humid tropical *** aim to fill this knowledge *** We investigated vegetation succession in SDtF areas consisting of three different successional stages(early,intermediate,late),and a SDtF-savanna ecotone in the municipal district of Juramento,north of Minas Gerais State,*** twelve 400 m2 plots in each area,we compared vegetation parameters and structural variables(absolute density and basal area)and examined the floristic composition of the tree component to find gradients of *** Findings We found evidence of species turnover along a successional gradi-ent,with the intermediate stage showing the highest species rich-ness and *** was accompanied with a significant increase in the number of tree individuals and basal area from the early to intermediate successional ***,the intermediate and late SDtF successional stages were more similar in structure and *** ecotone was the most species rich and was similar to the intermediate SDtF and early successional stage in species richness and floristic composition *** results will have implications for guiding SDtF management and recovery programs.
