Landslide Reliability Analysis Based on Transfer Coefficient Method: A Case Study from Three Gorges Reservoir

To evaluate the reliability of a landslide in a reservoir, the universal transfer coefficient method, which is popularized by the Chinese standard, is adopted as performance function in this study for：（1） common deterministic method stability evaluation; （2） reliability evaluation based on a Monte Carlo method; （3） comparison of landslide reliability under different water levels and under different correlation coefficients between soil shear strength parameters （c, Φ）, respectively with mean, standard deviation, reliability coefficient and failure probability. This article uses the Bazimen （八字门） landslide, which is located at the outlet of Xiangxi （香溪） River in the Three Gorges Reservoir, as an example to evaluate its stability and reliability under different water levels with two-dimensional deterministic and probabilistic methods. With the assumption that constant mean and normal distributed shear strength parameters （c, Φ）, correlation coefficient c, Φ=-1 based reliability analysis, compared with c, Φ=0 and 1, indicates obviously more increase of reliability index and lower standard deviation as water levels rise. To the case of a certain water level, c, Φ=-1 does not have constantly positive or negative effects on landslide reliability compared with c, Φ=0 or 1, but is associated with water level. Whereas the safety factor Fs by deterministic method, which is almost the same value as corresponding mean of safety factor from probabilistic analysis, will increase slightly as water level increases.

Magnetic resonance imaging in children and adolescents with chronic inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD) represent challenges, both from a diagnostic, and therapeutic point of view. Deep-seated anatomic structures are difficult to assess by ultrasound technique alone. As radiation-free alternative cross-sectional imaging method, magnetic resonance imaging of the intestinal structures is costly and time-consuming. Examination of pediatric patients imply additional considerations: reduction of body motions in younger children and consideration of the most appropriate preparation, and examination technique. The demanding Sellink technique is the only means for appropriately distending the lesser intestine in order to detect small bowel strictures. Oral intake of contrast medium(CM) alone shows its limitations regarding distensibility. The need for intravenous contrast media application needs to be considered, too. Active inflammation of both intestinal wall, and mesentery can be demonstrated accurately. Nevertheless, viable alternatives to CM application is desirable, considering non-negligible adverse reactions. Recent data suggest diffusion weighted imaging might fill this diagnostic gap. Irrespective of sequence technique chosen, bowel movement remains a major obstacle. Antispasmolytics in their function as smooth muscle relaxants help in improving image quality, however, their use in children might be off-label. Optimal preparation for the examination and appropriate imaging technique allow for diagnosing typical patterns of changes in IBD, such as bowel wall thickening, ulcers, mural stratification, strictures, creeping fat, and comb sign, and lymphadenopathy. The article gives a detailed overview of current significance of magnetic resonance imaging pediatric patients suffering from IBD, considering indications, limitations, and safety aspects.

Biased dispersal of Metrioptera bicolor, a wing dimorphic bush-cricket

In the highly fragmented landscape of central Europe, dispersal is of particular importance as it determines the long-term survival of animal populations. Dispersal not only secures the recolonization of patches where populations went extinct, it may also rescue small populations and thus prevent local extinction events. As dispersal involves different individual fitness costs, the decision to disperse should not be random but context- dependent and often will be biased toward a certain group of individuals （e.g., sex- and wing morph-biased dispersal）. Although biased dispersal has far-reaching consequences for animal populations, immediate studies of sex- and wing morph-biased dispersal in orthopterans are very rare. Here, we used a combined approach of morphological and genetic analyses to investigate biased dispersal of Metrioptera bicolor, a wing dimorphic bush-cricket. Our results clearly show wing morph-biased dispersal for both sexes of M. bicolor. In addition, we found sex-biased dispersal for macropterous individuals, but not for micropters. Both, morphological and genetic data, favor macropterous males as dispersal unit of this bush-cricket species. To get an idea of the flight ability ofM. bicolor, we compared our morphological data with that of Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria, which are very good flyers. Based on our morphological data, we suggest a good flight ability for macropters of M. bicolor, although flying individuals of this species are seldom observed.

Exogenous sphingomyelinase causes impaired intestinal epithelial barrier function

AIM: To test the hypothesis that hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramide changes the composition of tight junctions (TJs) with increasing permeability of the intestinal epithelium. METHODS: Monolayers of Caco-2 cells were used as an in vitro model for the intestinal barrier. Permeability was determined by quantifi cation of transepithelialflux and transepithelial resistance. Sphingolipid-rich membrane microdomains were isolated by a discontinuous sucrose gradient and characterized by Western-blot. Lipid content of microdomains was analysed by tandem mass spectrometry. Ceramide was subcellularly localized by immunofluorescent ***: Exogenous sphingomyelinase increased transepithelial permeability and decreased transepithelial resistance at concentrations as low as 0.01 U/mL. Lipid analysis showed rapid accumulation of ceramide in the membrane fractions containing occludin and claudin-4, representing TJs. In these fractions we observed a concomitant decrease of sphingomyelin and cholesterol with increasing concentrations of ceramide. Immunofluorescent staining confirmed clustering of ceramide at the sites of cell-cell contacts. Neutralization of surface ceramide prevented the permeability-increase induced by platelet activating factor. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that changes in lipid composition of TJs impair epithelial barrier functions. Generation of ceramide by sphingomyelinases might contribute to disturbed barrier function seen in diseases such as inflammatory, infectious, toxic or radiogenic bowel disease.

Polymer solar cells were fabricated based on composite fihns of poly（2-methoxy-5-（2＇-ethyl-hexyloxy）-1,4- phenylenevinylene）（MEH-PPV）：fullerene derivative （6,6）-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester （PCBM） with weight blend ratio of 1 ： 3, 1 ： 4 and 1 ： 5, spin-coated from chloroform （CF）, chlorobenzene （CB）, and o-dichlorobenzene （ODCB） solutions, respectively. Photoinduced current and power conversion efficiency （PCE） of the devices show a dependence on the solvents. The solar cells have the highest PCE at 1 ： 5 blend ratio. Transmis- sion electron microscopy （TEM） morphology reveals that there are some voids in MEH-PPV：PCBM films. The void number decreases with the solvent from CF to CB and ODCB. We found the voids are located at the bottom of the films through electron tomography technique by TEM and film bottom-side morphology study by atomic force microscopy. The charge carrier transport efficiency and collection efficiency should decrease greatly due to the voids, and the more voids the film has, the more degree the efficiencies decrease. PCE of the solar cell prepared from CF is lower than that of the solar cells prepared from CB and ODCB. The void phenomenon of MEH-PPV：PCBM based solar cell and method to investigate the void position provide an experimental evidence and research mentality to fabricate polymer solar cell with high performance.

By skeptics and undecided we refer to nodes in clustered social networks that cannot be assigned easily to any of the *** nodes are typically found either at the interface between clusters(the undecided)or at their boundaries(the skeptics).Identifying these nodes is relevant in marketing applications like voter targeting,because the persons represented by such nodes are often more likely to be affected in marketing campaigns than nodes deeply within *** far this identification task is not as well studied as other network analysis tasks like clustering,identifying central nodes,and detecting *** approach this task by deriving novel geometric features from the network structure that naturally lend themselves to an interactive visual approach for identifying interface and boundary nodes.

Geochronological constraints on the metamorphic sole of the Semail ophiolite in the United Arab Emirates

The Semail ophiolite of Oman and the United Arab Emirates （UAE） provides the best preserved large slice of oceanic lithosphere exposed on the continental crust, and offers unique opportunities to study processes of ocean crust formation, subduction initiation and obduction. Metamorphic rocks exposed in the eastern UAE have traditionally been interpreted as a metamorphic sole to the Semail ophiolite. However, there has been some debate over the possibility that the exposures contain components of older Arabian continental crust. To help answer this question, presented here are new zircon and futile U-Pb geochronological data from various units of the metamorphic rocks. Zircon was absent in most samples. Those that yielded zircon and futile provide dominant single age populations that are 95-93 Ma, partially overlapping with the known age of oceanic crust formation （96.5-94.5 Ma）, and partially overlapping with cooling ages of the metamorphic rocks （95 90 Ma）. The data are interpreted as dating high-grade metamorphism during subduction burial of the sediments into hot mantle lithosphere, and rapid cooling during their subsequent exhumation. A few discordant zircon ages, interpreted as late Neoproterozoic and younger, represent minor detrital input from the continent. No evidence is found in favour of the existence of older Arabian continental crust within the metamorphic rocks of the UAE.

Enhanced Pseudo‑Capacitive Contributions to High‑Performance Sodium Storage in TiO2/C Nanofibers via Double Effects of Sulfur Modification

Pseudo-capacitive mechanisms can provide higher energy densities than electrical double-layer capacitors while being faster than bulk storage ***,they suffer from low intrinsic electronic and ion conductivities of the active ***,taking advantage of the combination of TiS2 decoration,sulfur doping,and a nanometer-sized structure,as-spun TiO2/C nanofiber composites are developed that enable rapid transport of sodium ions and electrons,and exhibit enhanced pseudo-capacitively dominated *** a scan rate of 0.5 mV s−1,a high pseudo-capacitive contribution(76%of the total storage)is obtained for the S-doped TiS2/TiO2/C electrode(termed as TiS2/S-TiO2/C).Such enhanced pseudocapacitive activity allows rapid chemical kinetics and significantly improves the high-rate sodium storage performance of *** TiS2/S-TiO2/C composite electrode delivers a high capacity of 114 mAh g−1 at a current density of 5000 mA g−*** capacity maintains at high level(161 mAh g−1)even after 1500 cycles and is still characterized by 58 mAh g−1 at the extreme condition of 10,000 mA g−1 after 10,000 cycles.

Lipopeptide Antibiotics Produced by the Engineered Strain Bacillus subtilis GEB3 and Detection of Its Bioactivity

MALDI-TOF-MS technology was used for identification of lipopeptide antibiotics producedby GEB3 strain, a derivative of Bacillus subtilis 168 which was transformed by lpaB3gene. The result showed GEB3 only produced lipopeptide antibiotic surfactin. The analysisby LC-MS demonstrated that GEB3 produced standard surfactin isoforms with side chainlengths of 13,14 and 15 carbon atoms. The bioactivity detection of surfactin indicatedthat the surfactin produced by GEB3 had inhibition effect on plant pathogens Rhizoctoniasolani and Pyricularia oryzae.
