Investment in silvicultural techniques is noticeably lacking,especially in breeding programs for non-conventional wood *** genotype×environment interaction(G×E)is essential to the development of breeding ***,this study aimed to estimate genetic diversity of and the effects of G×E interaction on two progeny tests of Cordia trichotoma,including the estimation of genetic gain and genetic diversity after *** the experiment,30 progenies of *** were tested at two sites with differing soil *** at breast height(1.30 m above soil surface,dbh-cm),total height,diameter at 30 cm from the soil,first branch height,and survival were all monitored for four *** deviance,best linear unbiased estimator,and harmonic mean of relative performance of genetic values(mHPRVG)were all calculated to predict breeding values,estimate genetic parameters,and analyze *** quantified traits varied significantly among progenies by soil type,with greatest variation recorded for genetic *** of the progenies led to predictions of genetic gain,ranging from 7.73 to 15.45%,for dbh at four years of *** calculated decrease in genetic diversity after selection showed that this parameter should be monitored in subsequent breeding cycles.G×E was low for all *** best-performing progenies proved most stable and best adapted to the different environmental conditions tested.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of ( Z)-4-( p- Bromophenylthio)-3-( p-nitrobenzoyloxy)-3-buten-2-one

A new enone (CH 3Co C( p No 2C 6H 4Coo)=CH S C 6H 4( p Br) 5, C 17 H 12 NBro 5S, m r =422.25) was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined by X ray diffraction method. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic system, space group P2 1/c with a=6.4121(9), b=12.804(1), c=20.998(2) , β=94.884(9)°, V=1717.1(3) 3, Z=4, D c =1.633 g/cm 3, μ (mo Kα )=2.542 mm -1 , F( 000)=848. Final R =0.0428 and wR =0.0916 for 3335 reflections with I>2σ(I) . The title compound exists as Z isomer with p bromothiophenolate and o nitrobenzoate groups cis arranged around asymmetrical centre. This observation suggests that the substitution of thiophenolate for bromine is a stereoselective step.

Acute sensorineural hearing loss associated with peginterferon and ribavirin combination therapy during hepatitis C treatment: outcome after resumption of therapy

Peginterferon and ribavirin combination therapy for the treatment of hepatitis C virus （HCV） is well known to be associated with significant adverse effects. Sensorineural hearing loss, that in most cases is unilateral, has been reported as a consequence of therapy with both non-pegylabed and pegylated interferon （pegIFN） but is not a well-known adverse effect. We report a 45-year-old Caucasian woman who developed acute sensorineural hearing loss 2 mo after starting therapy with pegIFN-α 2b and ribavirin for the treatment of chronic HCV, genotype la. She did not report the hearing loss to the hepatitis clinic until 1 mo, later whereupon therapy was promptly discontinued. Although her serum alanine aminotransferase （ALT） normalized and her HCV-RNA became undetectable after 12 wk of pegIFN and dbavirin therapy, after discontinuation, her HCV-RNA became detectable with significant elevations of serum ALT. Four months after initial discontinuation, the patient re-commenced pegIFN and ribavirin combination therapy. After 44 of 48 wk of therapy, the patient＇s liver biochemistry has normalized and the HCV-RNA is undetectable. She has not developed worsening of her hearing loss and hearing on the left-side is unaffected. Both patients and physicians should be aware that sensorineural hearing loss may occur with pegIFN therapy. our experience suggests that re-institution of therapy is not always associated with further hearing impairment.

Nonlocal material properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Natural frequencies of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)obtained using a model based on Eringen’s nonlocal continuum mechanics and the Timoshenko beam theory are compared with those obtained by molecular dynamics *** goal was to determine the values of the material constant,considered here as a nonlocal property,as a function of the length and the diameter of *** present approach has the advantage of eliminating the SWCNT thickness from the computations.A sensitivity analysis of natural frequencies to changes in the nonlocal material constant is also carried out and it shows that the influence of the nonlocal effects decreases with an increase in the SWCNT *** matching of natural frequencies shows that the nonlocal material constant varies with the natural frequency and the SWCNT length and diameter.

multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were submitted to chemical and thermal treatments in order to incorporate different heteroatoms on the surface. o-, S- and N-containing groups were successfully introduced onto the CNTs without significant changes of the textural properties. The cata-lytic activity of these heteroatom-modified CNTs was studied in two liquid phase oxidation processes: catalytic ozonation and catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAo), using oxalic acid and phenol as model compounds. In both cases, the presence of strongly acidic o-containing groups was found to decrease the catalytic activity of the CNTs. on the other hand, the introduction of S species (mainly sulfonic acids) enhanced the removal rate of the model compounds, particularly in the CWAo of phenol. Additional experiments were performed with a radical scavenger and sodium persulfate, in order to clarify the reaction mechanism. Nitrogen functionalities improve the catalytic performance of the original CNTs, regardless of the process or of the pollutant.

Resveratrol engages selective apoptotic signals in gastric adenocarcinoma cells

AIm： To investigate the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol in three gastric adenocarcinoma cancer cell lines, two of which （AGS and SNU-1） express p53 and one （KATo-m） with deleted p53. mETHoDS： Nuclear fragmentation was used to quantitate apoptotic cells; caspase activity was determined by photometric detection of cleaved substrates; formation of oxidized cytochrome C was used to measure cytochrome C activity, and Western blot analysis was used to determine protein expression, RESULTS： Gastric cancer cells, irrespective of their p53 status, responded to resveratrol with fragmentation of DNA and cleavage of nuclear lamins A and B and PARP. Resveratrol, however, has no effect on mitochondria-associated apoptotic proteins Bcl-2, Bcl- xl, Bax, Bid or Smac/Diablo, and did not promote sub-cellular redistribution of cytochrome C, indicating that resveratrol-induced apoptosis of gastric carcinoma cells does not require breakdown of mitochondrial membrane integrity. Resveratrol up-regulated p53 protein in SNU-1 and AGS cells but there was a difference in response of intracellular apoptotic signals between these cell lines. SNU-1 cells responded to resveratrol treatment with down-regulation of survivin, whereas in AGS and KATo- 111 cells resveratrol stimulated caspase 3 and cytochrome C oxidase activities. CoNCLUSIoN： These findings indicate that even within a specific cancer the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol are cell type dependent and suggest that such differences may be related to differentiation or lack of differentiation of these cells.

Long-lasting effects of unplanned logging on the seed rain of mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern South America
