Screening for a new Streptomyces strain capable of efficient keratin degradation

Keratinous wastes could be degraded by some microorganisms in nature. Native human foot skin （NHFS） was used as sole nitrogen source to screen microorganisms with keratin-degrading capability. From approximately 200 strains, a strain of Streptomyces sp. strain No. 16 was found to possess the strongest keratinolytic activity, and the total activity in the culture was 110 KU/ml with specific activity of 2870 KU/mg protein （KU： keratinase unit）. Substrate specificity test indicated that the crude keratinase could degrade keratin azure, human hair, cock feathers and collagen. The optimal pH of the crude keratinase ranged from 7.5 to 10 and the temperature ranged from 40℃ to 55℃. Metal chelating agent ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid obviously stimulated the keratinolytic activity but suppressed the proteolytic activity. To our knowledge, this is the first report on specific induction of keratinases by NHFS from an actinomycete. Moreover, excellent characteristics of its crude keratinase may lead to the potential application in waste treatment and recovery, poultry and leather industry, medicine, and cosmetic development.

Bronchobiliary fistula(BBF) is a pathologic channel between the biliary tract and bronchial tree. In general, congenital BBF is relatively rare in adult patients. There are a few case reports suggesting that BBF is mainly secondary to hepatobiliary diseases, such as biliary obstruction, tumor, surgery, or liver abscess, and liver tumor is the predominant causative factor [1]. In addition, with the increasing number of liver and biliary surgeries and interventional therapies in recent years, more cases of BBF were reported as a postoperative complication [ 2, 3 ]. In this case, we presented a patient who underwent interventional treatment for liver tumor and was treated for his respiratory symptoms but diagnosed with BBF finally. Here, we summarized the clinical features and main diagnostic procedures of the case, aiming to provide evidence for early identification and diagnosis of BBF.

Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density,high specific strength,excellent machinability,good biocompatibility,and *** primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment,which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas,which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the *** surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry,roughness,topography,corrosion resistance,wear resistance,hydrophilicity,and thus cell response to the surface of the *** composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power,laser scan velocity,frequency,pulse duration,pressure,gas circulation,working time,spot size,beam focal position,and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility,melting point,and boiling point).This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting,laser surface alloying,laser cladding,laser surface texturing,and laser shock peening,and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant ***,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition,microstructure,and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique.

BACKGROUND Prealbumin is considered to be a useful indicator of nutritional status. Furthermore, it has been found to be associated with severities and prognosis of a range of diseases. However, limited data on the association of baseline prealbumin level with outcomes of patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction(STEMI) are *** We analyzed 2313 patients admitted for acute STEMI between October 2013 and December 2020. In-hospital outcomes and mortality during the 49 months(interquartile range: 26–73 months) follow-up period were compared between patients with the low prealbumin level(< 170 mg/L) and those with the high prealbumin level(≥ 170 mg/L).RESULTS A total of 114 patients(4.9%) died during hospitalization. After propensity score matching, patients with the low prealbumin level than those with the high prealbumin level experienced higher incidences of heart failure with Killip class Ⅲ(9.9%vs. 4.4%, P = 0.034), cardiovascular death(8.4% vs. 3.4%, P = 0.035) and the composite of major adverse cardiovascular events(19.2%vs. 10.3%, P = 0.012). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that the low prealbumin level(< 170 mg/L) was an independent predictor of in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events(odds ratio = 1.918, 95% CI: 1.250–2.942, P = 0.003). The cutoff value of prealbumin level for predicting in-hospital death was 170 mg/L(area under the curve = 0.703, 95% CI: 0.651–0.754, P< 0.001;sensitivity = 0.544, specificity = 0.794). However, after multivariate adjustment of possible confounders, baseline prealbumin level(170 mg/L) was no longer independently associated with 49-month cardiovascular death. During the initial phases of operation following the construction or renovation of existing buildings,the availability of historical power usage data is limited,which leads to lower accuracy in load forecasting and hinders normal ***,by transferring load data from similar buildings,it is possible to enhance forecasting ***,indiscriminately expanding all source domain data to the target domain is highly likely to result in negative transfer *** study explores the feasibility of utilizing similar buildings(source domains)in transfer learning by implementing and comparing two distinct forms of multi-source transfer ***,this study focuses on the Higashita area in Kitakyushu City,Japan,as the research *** buildings that exhibit the highest similarity to the target buildings within this area were selected for ***,the two-stage TrAdaBoost.R^(2) algorithm is used for multi-source transfer learning,and its transfer effect is ***,the application effects of instance-based(IBMTL)and feature-based(FBMTL)multi-source transfer learning are compared,which explained the effect of the source domain data on the forecasting accuracy in different transfer *** results show that combining the two-stage TrAdaBoost.R^(2) algorithm with multi-source data can reduce the CV-RMSE by 7.23%compared to a single-source domain,and the accuracy improvement is *** the same time,multi-source transfer learning,which is based on instance,can better supplement the integrity of the target domain data and has a higher forecasting ***,IBMTL tends to retain effective data associations and FBMTL shows higher forecasting *** findings of this study,which include the verification of real-life algorithm application and source domain availability,can serve as a theoretical reference for implementing transfer learning in load forecasting.
