Survey and examination of the potential alternative hosts of Villosiclava virens, the pathogen of rice false smut, in China

Rice false smut is caused by ascomycete Villosiclava virens, whose potential alternative hosts have been assumed previ- ously. Here its potential alternative hosts were surveyed and identified from 2008 to 2013 in the main rice-growing regions in China. Two common weeds in paddy fields, Digitaria sanguinalis Scop. and Echinochloa crusgalli （L.） Beauv., were found to present the similar symptoms to smut diseases in a few individuals in 2012 and 2013 in Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces of China, respectively. After the examinations of the spore morphology, their infection and extension mode in hosts, pathogen cell wall components, and molecular identification, the two pathogens were identified to be the Basidiomycetes, Ustilago syntherismae and Ustilago trichophora, respectively. So far there has been no alternative host of V. virens to be identified in China. These suggest that the alternative hosts of V. virens, if they do exist, are not possible to play an important role in the pathogen life cycle and the disease epidemics.

We propose and discuss terahertz(THz) electro-optic modulator induced by periodically patterned graphene microcavity. Due to the joint effect of graphene plasmon resonances and Fabry-Perot(F-P) oscillations, plasmon-induced transparency(PIT) effect is achieved and the operation frequency can be dynamically tuned by graphene Fermi energies and structural parameters. The results reveal that modulation depth(MD) larger than 80% is obtained across a wide frequency range from 4.2 THz to 9.4 THz, and the largest MD and Q factor reaches 95% and 15.8, respectively. In addition, operation frequency range and MD can also be tuned by optimizing the structure parameters. This investigation promises the development of high-performance widely tunable THz modulator in chip integrated photonic circuits.

Background and Aims:Direct evidence on the outcomes of hepatitis B e antigen(HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis(CHB)patients with normal alanine transaminase after long-term antiviral treatment is ***:HBeAg-nega-tive patients with normal ALT and positive HBV DNA(≥20 IU/mL)were retrospectively *** endpoints included virological response(HBV DNAliver nodules,cirrhosis,and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Results:***(n=194)was divided into three subgroups,untreated(n=67),treatment-continued(n=87),and treatment-dis-continued patients(n=40),with a median follow-up of 54 *** treatment-continued group achieved 100%(95%CI:94.7-100)virological response,and significantly reduced APRI and FIB-4 scores(both pliver nodules and cirrhosis in that group was reduced by 76%(HR:0.24,95%CI:0.11-0.54,pliver cirrhosis by 92%(95%CI:0.01-0.67)and 93%(95%CI:0.01-0.53)*** untreated and treatment-discontinued patients,*** patient adhering to treatment de-veloped HCC,but one in each of the remaining groups ***:Continuous nucleos(t)ide analog(NA)treat-ment has a satisfactory effectiveness and helps to lower the risk of liver cirrhosis in HBeAg-negative CHB patients with normal alanine transaminase,especially in those with HBV DNA22,000 IU/mL.

While the high-energy radiation effects on polypropylene, which are crucial for the cable industry for nuclear power plants, have been thoroughly studied, the property changes of PP at low-dose-rate electron-beam irradiation are far from elucidated. Herein, the influence of electron-beam irradiation on the structure and properties of PP was examined. The static EB irradiation conditions were 1.2 MeV at a low dose rate of 20 kGy/h to achieve absorbed doses ranging from 45, to 60, 100, and 200 *** molecular structure was first evaluated by measuring the carboxyl index and the relative radical concentrations via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron spin resonance, respectively. Mechanical, differential scanning colorimetric, and rheological tests were carried out to further investigate the changes in the properties(tensile, crystalizing, and viscoelastic properties) of irradiated PP, which showed good agreement with the structural analysis results. We found that radio-oxidative degradation(chain scission) was predominant, which can be due to the low dose rate facilitating oxygen diffusion into the PP matrix during electron-beam irradiation.

AIM:To describe and compare pathologic findings in eyes enucleated after superselective ophthalmic arterial chemotherapy(SOAC)or SOAC with intravenous chemotherapy(IVC)for ***:Medical records between January 1st,2014 and June 30th,2017 were retrospectively analyzed,and pathologic findings were *** study included 36 eyes from 22(61.1%)male and 14(38.9%)female *** of 36(52.8%)eyes received SOAC(mean=3,range=1-7)as primary treatment,and 17 of 36(47.2%)eyes received SOAC(mean=3.7,range=1-10)after IVC(mean=6.1,range=2-11).Tumor extension including choroidal invasion(n=9,25%),optic nerve invasion(n=5,13.9%)and anterior segment invasion(n=5,13.9%)were ***:Histopathologic evidence of ischemic damage in the retina and choroid was found in 28(77.8%)*** blood vessels were identified in 9(25%)eyes,including orbital artery in the retrobulbar orbit(n=1),intrascleral vessels(n=4),and chorioretinal vessels(n=6).Fibrotic changes were found in extraocular muscles(n=5,13.9%)and optic nerve(n=5,13.9%).Varying degrees of scleral degeneration were found in all *** statistical analysis,there was no significant difference in clinical and pathologic changes between SOAC group and SOAC with IVC group except for optic nerve invasion(P=0.047).CONCLUSION:SOAC for retinoblastoma can result in ocular toxicity,and SOAC with IVC do not increase the toxicity but reduced the incidence of optic nerve invasion.

Effects of Nitrogen Application on N_2O Flux from Fluvo-Aquic Soil Subject to Freezing-Thawing Process

A lab-incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different forms of nitrogen application （ammonium, NH4＋-N; nitrate, NO3--N; and amide-N, NH2-N） and different concentrations （40, 200 and 800 mg L-1） on N2O emission from the fluvo-aquic soil subjected to a freezing-thawing cycling. N2O emission sharply decreased at the start of soil freezing, and then showed a smooth line with soil freezing. In subject to soil thawing, N2O emission increased and reached a peak at the initial thawing stage. The average N2O emissions with addition of NH4＋-N, NO3 -N and NH2-N are 119.01, 611.61 and 148. 22 ug m-2 h-1, respectively, at the concentration of 40 mg L-1; 205.28, 1 084.40 and 106.13 ug m2 h-1 at the concentration of 200 mg L-1; and 693.95, 1 820.02 and 49.74 ug m-2 h4 at the concentration of 800 mg L-1. The control is only 100.35 ug m-2 h-1. N2O emissions with addition of NH4＋-N and NO3--N increased with increasing concentration, by ranging from 17.49 to 425.67% for NH4＋-N, and from 563.38 to 1458.6% for NO3--N compared with control. There was a timelag for N2O emission to reach a steady state with an increase of concentration. In contrast, by adding NH2-N to soil, N2O emission decreased with increasing concentration. In sum, NH4＋-N or NO3--N fertilizer incorporated in soil enhanced the cumulative N2O emission from the fluvo-aquic soil relative to amide-N. This study suggested that ammonium and nitrate concentration in overwintering water should be less than 200 and 40 mg L-1 in order to reduce N2O emissions from soil, regardless of amide-N.
