Positive effects of tree species diversity on litterfall quantity and quality along a secondary successional chronosequence in a subtropical forest

Aims Litterfall,as an important link between aboveground and belowground processes,plays a key role in forest ***,we test for effects of tree species richness on litter production and litter quality in subtropical *** study further encompasses a factorial gradient of secondary succession that resulted from human *** that a large percentage of subtropical forests are in secondary successional stages,understanding the role of biodiversity on forest re-growth after disturbance appears *** From January 2009 to December 2014,we monitored forest litterfall in 27 Comparative Study Plots that spanned a gradient of tree species richness(3-20 species)and secondary successional ages(~20 to 120 years)in Gutianshan Natural Nature Reserve,Zhejiang Province,*** experiment is part of the biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research platform‘BEF-China’.Tree litterfall was collected in monthly intervals using litter *** were separated into leaf and non-leaf *** litter was further sorted into dominant and other *** level monthly leaf litter C and N contents were analysed through a full *** linear mixed-effects models were applied to test for effects of tree species richness and successional age on litter quantity and leaf litter C/*** Findings Litterfall increased with species richness among and within successional age and this effect was consistent across *** older stands had higher litterfall and this effect was related to increased tree species ***,species richness did not change the intra-and inter-annual temporal stability of *** tree species richness increased leaf litter quality(decreased C/N),while successional age had no *** study indicates that more diverse forest stands produce more leaf litter and that this litter has higher N concentrations,which could promote forest growth through accelerated nutrient re-cycling.

Aims Soil respiration(Rs)is a major process controlling soil carbon loss in forest ***,the underlying mechanisms leading to variation in Rs along forest successional gradients are not well *** this study,we investigated the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on Rs along a forest successional gradient in southeast *** We selected 16 plots stratified by forest age,ranging from 20 to 120 *** each plot,six shallow collars and six deep collars were permanently inserted into the *** and deep collars were used to measure Rs and heterotrophic respiration(Rh),*** soil respiration(Ra)was estimated as the difference between Rs and *** layer respiration(R_(L))was calculated by subtracting soil respiration measured in collars without leaf litter layer(R_(NL))from *** was measured every 2 months,and soil temperature(ST)and soil volumetric water content(SVWC)were recorded every hour for 19 *** calculated daily Rs using an exponential model dependent on *** Rs was summed to obtain cumulative annual Rs *** equation modelling(SEM)was applied to identify the drivers of Rs during forest *** Findings Rs showed significant differences among three successive stages,and it was the highest in the young *** was higher in the young stage than in the medium *** annual Rs and Ra peaked in the young and old stages,*** annual Rh and respiration measured from soil organic matter(R_(SOM))decreased,whereas R_(L)increased with forest *** SEM revealed that cumulative annual Rs was influenced by fine root biomass and *** results indicated that the dominant force regulating Rs on a seasonal scale is ST;however,on a successional scale,belowground carbon emerges as the dominant influential factor.

BACKGROUND Serpin peptidase inhibitor clade H member 1(SERPINH1)was initially recognized as an oncogene implicated in various human ***,the clinical relevance and functional implications of SERPINH1 in colorectal cancer(CRC)remain largely *** To investigate the effects of SERPINH1 on CRC cells and its specific *** Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction,western blotting analysis,The Cancer Genome Atlas data mining and immunohistochemistry were employed to examine SERPINH1 expression in CRC cell lines and tissues.A series of in-vitro assays were performed to demonstrate the function of SERPINH1 and its possible mechanisms in *** SERPINH1 demonstrated elevated expression levels in both CRC cells and tissues,manifested at both mRNA and protein *** SERPINH1 levels correlated closely with advanced T stage,lymph node involvement,and distant metastasis,exhibiting a significant association with poorer overall survival among CRC *** investigations unveiled that SERPINH1 overexpression notably bolstered CRC cell proliferation,invasion,and migration in vitro,while conversely,SERPINH1 knockdown elicited the opposite *** set enrichment analysis underscored a correlation between SERPINH1 upregulation and genes associated with cell cycle *** findings underscored the capacity of heightened SERPINH1 levels to expedite G1/S phase cell cycle progression via phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT/mechanistic target of rapamycin pathway activation,thereby facilitating CRC cell invasion and *** These findings imply a crucial involvement of SERPINH1 in the advancement and escalation of CRC,potentially positioning it as a novel candidate for prognostic assessment and therapeutic intervention in CRC management.

Effect of clear-cutting silviculture on soil respiration in a subtropical forest of China

Aims Clear-cutting is a common forest management practice,especially in subtropical ***,the potential ecological consequences of clear-cutting remain *** particular,the effect of clear-cutting on soil processes,such as the carbon cycle,has not been quantified in subtropical ***,we investigated the response of soil respiration(Rs)to clear-cutting during a 12-month period in a subtropical forest in eastern *** We randomly selected four clear-cut(CC)plots and four corresponding undisturbed forest(UF)*** of Rs were made at monthly time points and were combined with continuous climatic measurements in both CC and *** Rs was estimated by interpolating data with an exponential model dependent on soil *** Rs was cumulated to annual Rs *** Findings In the first year after clear-cutting,annual estimates of Rs in CC(508±23g C m^(−2) yr^(−1))showed no significant difference to UF plots(480±12g C m^(−2) yr^(−1)).During the summer,soil temperatures were usually higher,whereas the soil volumetric water content was lower in CC than in UF *** long-term effects of clear-cutting on Rs are not significant,although there might be effects during the first several months after *** with previous work,this pattern was more pronounced in our subtropical forest than in the temperate and boreal forests that have been studied by *** aboveground residuals off-site after clear-cutting,our results indicate that the stimulation of increasing root debris,as well as environmental changes,will not lead to a significant increase in *** addition,long-term Rs will not show a significant decrease from the termination of root respiration,and this observation might be because of the influence of fast-growing vegetation after clear-cutting in situ.

On July 23,2022,the World health Organization(WHO)declared the monkeypox(mpox)outbreak a“Public health Emergency of International Concern.”Since 2022,outbreaks of mpox in many countries around the world have primarily resulted in fatalities among immunocompromised individuals,such as untreated HIV/AIDS *** the eradication of smallpox was declared by the WHO in 1980,the global vaccination against smallpox has been gradually *** also stopped routine smallpox vaccination in *** protective effect of the smallpox vaccine has decreased over time due to aging and declining immunity in those who were *** individuals,timely vaccination against smallpox is an effective means of protection against ***,due to safety concerns with the smallpox vaccine and the limitations of current mpox vaccines,there is no vaccine that is safe,effective,and has low side effects applied in clinical *** article provides a comprehensive review of the development of mpox virus(MPXV)vaccines,their application in special populations,and the current state of vaccine research,considering the etiology,transmission,and prevention of the ***,as an effective method of epidemic prevention,can provide long-term immune protection and effectively reduce the severity of ***,as there is no licensed specific MPXV vaccine available globally,the vaccines currently used for mpox prevention are mostly smallpox *** smallpox vaccines can offer some degree of protection against mpox by activating cross-protection in the body.

CO_(2)flooding in shale oil reservoir with radial borehole fracturing for CO_(2)storage and enhanced oil recovery

This study introduces a novel method integrating CO_(2)flooding with radial borehole fracturing for enhanced oil recovery and CO_(2)underground storage,a solution to the limited vertical stimulation reservoir volume in horizontal well fracturing.A numerical model is established to investigate the production rate,reservoir pressure field,and CO_(2)saturation distribution corresponding to changing time of CO_(2)flooding with radial borehole fracturing.A sensitivity analysis on the influence of CO_(2)injection location,layer spacing,pressure difference,borehole number,and hydraulic fractures on oil production and CO_(2)storage is *** CO_(2)flooding process is divided into four *** in layer spacing will significantly improve oil production rate and gas storage ***,serious gas channeling can occur when the spacing is lower than 20 *** the pressure difference between the producer and injector,the borehole number,the hydraulic fracture height,and the fracture width can also increase the oil production rate and gas storage *** analysis shows that layer spacing and fracture height greatly influence gas storage and oil *** outcomes are expected to provide a theoretical basis for the efficient development of shale oil reservoirs in the vertical direction.

Dynamic Analysis of A Deepwater Drilling Riser with A New Hang-off System

The safety of risers in hang-off states is a vital challenge in offshore oil and gas engineering.A new hang-off system installed on top of risers is proposed for improving the security of *** approach leads to a challenging problem:coupling the dynamics of risers with a new hang-off system combined with multiple structures and complex *** accurately analyze the dynamic responses of the coupled system,a coupled dynamic model is established based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam-column theory and penalty function method.A comprehensive analysis method is proposed for coupled dynamic analysis by combining the finite element method and the Newmarkβ*** analysis program is also developed in MATLAB for dynamic *** simulation results show that the dynamic performances of the risers at the top part are significantly improved by the new hang-off system,especially the novel design,which includes the centralizer and articulation *** bending moment and lateral deformation of the risers at the top part decrease,while the hang-off joint experiences a great bending moment at the bottom of the lateral restraint area which requires particular attention in design and *** platform navigation speed range under the safety limits of risers expands with the new hang-off system in use.

Multifunctional materials are powerful tools to support the advancement of energy conversion *** with prominent electromagnetic and electrochemical properties can realize the conversion of electromagnetic energy and solve the subsequent storage ***,an electrospinning-thermal reduction method is employed to construct ultrafine nickel nanoparticle modified porous SiO_(2)/C(Ni-SiO_(2)/C)hollow nanofibers as promising materials for applications in both electromagnetic wave absorption(EMA)and lithium-ion ***,when used as an EMA material,the reflection loss(RL)of Ni-SiO_(2)/C can reach−47.8 dB at 15.8 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.2 *** excellent microwave absorption performance can be attributed to the enhanced conduction loss,polarization relaxation,synergistic magnetic loss,and preferred impedance matching,which result from multi-component magnetic/dielectric synergy and the unique interconnected multidimensional hollow ***,the electronic conductivity and electrochemical activity of the samples are significantly enhanced due to the uniform distribution of ultrafine Ni nanoparticles in the amorphous SiO_(2)/C ***,the hierarchical hollow porous structure provides sufficient free space for volume change during lithiation/delithiation ***,the Ni-SiO_(2)/C nanocomposite exhibits a high reversible capacity of 917.6 mAh·g^(−1)at 0.1 A·g^(−1).At a high current density of 2 A·g^(−1),a capacity of 563.9 mAh·g^(−1)can be maintained after 300 *** energy conversion-storage device is designed to store waste electromagnetic energy in the form of useful electrical *** work inspires the development of high-performance bifunctional materials.
