The liver,adipose tissue,and skeletal muscle work not only independently but also collaboratively to maintain glucose and lipid homeostasis under different nutritional and environmental conditions(da Silva Rosa et al.,2020).Dysfunctions of these active metabolic and endocrine tissues lead to a variety of metabolic,cardiovascular,and cerebrovascular disorders,including type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),atherosclerosis,metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD;also previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease),and stroke(Wang et al.,2020).Here,we summarize the interaction between the liver and muscle in the regulation of glucolipid metabolism and discuss the key metabolic factors that mediate their crosstalk in the context of physiological(fasting and postprandial state)and pathological conditions(obesity,T2DM,and MAFLD).

Optimizing Raman quantum memory with dynamic phase

Optical quantum memory is a key component of emerging quantum technologies and applications. One of the most promising protocols, far-off-resonant Raman memory, is still beset by its *** now, the only effective method for enhancing its efficiency in experiments has been the intensity modulation method on the control field, while the experimental demonstrations still fail to meet the theoretical expectation. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate how to optimize the Raman quantum memory process using a new method called phase modulation; 52.7% total memory efficiency is realized by applying a phase modulation on the control field with a near-square intensity waveform of the control field, thereby resulting in an increase in efficiency of 13.3% compared to the best case of no phase modulation. Additionally, a hybrid method, combining the phase and intensity modulations, is demonstrated with 87.3% memory efficiency. Such high-efficiency results in 99.0% unconditional fidelity even at near single photon level. The unconditional fidelity is always higher than that of the intensity method as the input photon number of the signal increases and can still beat the nonclone limit, even at 128.1 photons/pulse. Our phase modulation method has great potential applications in quantum information processing due to the advantages of low experimental requirements but an additional degree of freedom and high performance, especially for the high speed and high photon number state manipulation.

Dear Editors,China has made rapid advances in the field of stem cell re- search, especially in terms of the scale of financing received, numbers of published papers, and investors and new in- vestment products （Yuan et al., 2012）. Accordingly, public knowledge on stem cell research has also increased dramat- ically. Despite their widespread implementation, specific assessment of Chinese medical workers＇ attitudes toward such research is lacking. In order to evaluate and analyze their knowledge and information level about the scientific and therapeutic potential of stem cells, and to verify their attitudes toward different types of stem cells, the nationwide survey study was conducted between December 2013 and August 2014.

Objective To determine whether smoking increases the risk for developing metabolic syndrome （MetS） in Chinese *** A total of 693 men with no MetS at baseline were followed for 2.9‐5.5 *** were divided into nonsmokers,ex‐smokers,and current smokers according to baseline smoking *** After adjusting for age,education level,alcohol intake,fasting plasma insulin,HOMA‐IR index,and BMI at baseline and weight change,current smokers were dose‐dependently associated with increased risk for developing new MetS compared with *** odds ratio （OR） was 2.131 （95% CI,1.264,3.592;P0.01） for the NCEPIII definition or 3.083 （95% CI,1.807,5.295;P0.01） for the JCDCG definition of ***‐smokers who had quit for ≥13 years significantly decreased the risk for developing new MetS defined by the JCDCG *** with nonsmokers,current smokers were significantly associated with increased incidence of hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL‐*** Smoking is a risk factor for developing MetS in Chinese men after adjusting for age,education level,alcohol intake,fasting plasma insulin,HOMA‐IR,BMI,and weight *** could be due to an increased incidence of *** cessation for 13 years decreased the risk for developing MetS defined by the JCDCG definition.

As of February 22,a total of 198 confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in Harbin,Heilongjiang Province,and no new local cases were reported in Harbin over the next 54 days(1).However,on April 9,a newly confirmed COVID-19 case was reported with an unknown source of infection(2).The patient,a 54-year-old male,developed a fever on March 28 with the highest recorded temperature at 37.5℃.On April 7,the symptoms worsened and included dyspnea,cough,sputum,chest pain,and other symptoms,though he did not experience chest distress,heart palpitations,nausea and vomiting,abdominal pain or *** went to the fever clinic of the Harbin Second Hospital and was admitted to the isolation ward with a temperature of 37.2°*** patient also had a history of diabetes.

Low-carbohydrate diets lead to greater weight loss and better glucose homeostasis than exercise: a randomized clinical trial

Lifestyle interventions,including dietary adjustments and exercise,are important for obesity *** study enrolled adults with overweight or obesity to explore whether either low-carbohydrate diet(LCD)or exercise is more effective in metabolism ***-five eligible subjects were randomly divided into an LCD group(n=22)and an exercise group(EX,n=23).The subjects either adopted LCD(carbohydrate intake<50 g/day)or performed moderate-to-vigorous exercise(≥30 min/day)for 3 *** the interventions,LCD led to a larger weight loss than EX(−3.56±0.37 kg vs.−1.24±0.39 kg,P<0.001),as well as a larger reduction in fat mass(−2.10±0.18 kg vs.−1.25±0.24 kg,P=0.007)and waist circumference(−5.25±0.52 cm vs.−3.45±0.38 cm,P=0.008).Both interventions reduced visceral and subcutaneous fat and improved liver steatosis and insulin *** decreased in both two groups,whereas low-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased in the LCD group but decreased in the EX *** glycemic parameters,including serum glycated albumin,mean sensor glucose,coefficient of variability(CV),and largest amplitude of glycemic excursions,substantially declined in the LCD *** CV slightly decreased after *** pilot study suggested that the effects of LCD and exercise are similar in alleviating liver steatosis and insulin *** with exercise,LCD might be more efficient for weight loss and glucose homeostasis in people with obesity.
