Development of a general circumferentially nonuniform heat transfer fuel rod model for subchannel analysis and application to helical fuel rods

The subchannel analysis method is one of the most crucial transient safety analysis methods in the thermal design of nuclear reactors. The nonuniformity of circumferential heat transfer is slight in conventional pressurized water reactor (PWR)cores, but it is significant in advanced reactors with wire-wrapped or helical fuel rods. Predicting circumferentially nonuniform heat transfer behavior can be challenging owing to the complex geometry of helical fuel rods. In this study, a general circumferentially nonuniform heat transfer fuel rod (GCNF) model is developed to predict the fuel central temperature and circumferential heat flux and wall temperature. This model incorporates a refined two-dimensional fuel conduction model and circumferential nonuniform shape factor, addressing the dual factors contributing to the circumferential nonuniformity of helical fuel rods. An empirical correlation for the nonuniform shape factor is developed based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results, and it is implemented to the subchannel code. The newly developed model is applied to a helical fuel annulus and validated by comparing the prediction results with CFD data. The maximum wall temperature predicted by the code is 1.15°C lower than the value calculated through CFD. In terms of the heat flux, the maximum value at the inner corner is22 kW lower than that obtained from the CFD prediction. The accurate prediction of circumferentially nonuniform heat transfer in helical fuel, concerning the surface heat flux and cladding temperature, addresses existing shortcomings in helical fuel subchannel analysis methods. Additionally, the capability to predict the fuel central temperature is essential for the safety analysis to determine whether fuel rods are melting. The generality of the model framework allows it to be used for the prediction of circumferential nonuniform heat transfer behavior in other types of fuel assemblies.

Optimal Six Vector Switching Pattern in Matrix Converters for Reducing Harmonics and Switching Loss

This paper analyses harmonic distortion caused by the narrow pulse problem in matrix converters,and presents an improved switching pattern that is based on the basic five vector switching *** limited switching frequencies,the improved pattern solves the narrow pulse problem by applying an additional zero vector and adjusting the sequence of the four active vectors at the same time to minimize the switching *** results show that in the six vector switching pattern,a)the low-frequency harmonics caused by the narrow pulse problem are greatly reduced;b)the average switching frequency is reduced compared with the five vector pattern;c)the sampling frequency harmonics are apparently attenuated though a little 1/2 and 3/2 sampling frequency harmonics are produced;d)the THD of the output current is improved to the same level of the three zero vector switching pattern(TZVSP);e)the proposed switching pattern has benefits in both normal and unbalance input voltage *** results on a matrix converter platform,verify the benefits of the six vector switching *** dynamic,lower harmonics and lower losses can be achieved by using the proposed six vector switching pattern.

Biological and biochemical characterization of a red-eye mutant in Nilaparvata lugens （Hemiptera： Delphacidae）

A red-eye colony was established in our laboratory in brown planthopper （BPH）, Nilaparvata lugens （Stal）, a major rice pest in Asia. Except for the red-eye phenotype, no other differences were observed between the wild-type （brown eye） and the mutant-type （red eye） in external characters. Genetic analysis revealed that the red-eye phenotype was controlled by a single autosomal recessive allele. Biological studies found that egg produc- tion and egg viability in the red-eye mutant colony were not significantly different from those in the wild-type BPH. Biochemical analysis and electronic microscopy examination revealed that the red-eye mutants contained decreased levels of both xanthommatin （brown） and pteridine （red） and reduced number of pigment granules. Thus, the changes of amount and ratio of the two pigments is the biochemical basis of this red-eye mutation. Our results indicate that the red-eye mutant gene （red） might be involved in one common gene locus shared by the two pigments in pigment transportation, pigment granule formation or some other processes.

Lowering the synthesis temperature of boron nitride nanotubes(BNNTs)is crucial for their *** primary reason for adopting a high temperature is to enable the effective activation of highmelting-point solid *** this study,we developed a novel approach for efficiently activating boron by introducing alkali metal compounds into the conventional MgO–B *** approach can be adopted to form various low-melting-point AM–Mg–B–O growth *** growth systems have improved catalytic capability and reactivity even under low-temperature conditions,facilitating the synthesis of BNNTs at temperatures as low as 850℃.In addition,molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory theoretically demonstrate that the systems maintain a liquid state at low temperatures and interact with N atoms to form BN *** findings offer novel insights into the design of boron activation and are expected to facilitate research on the low-temperature synthesis of BNNTs.

Buckling and Unbuckling of Superelastic NiTi Tube

Compared with other loading types,compression is preferred for applications of superelastic NiTi due to the significantly longer fatigue ***,compressive loading induces concerns on potential structural *** this paper,a phenomenological constitutive model is proposed for superelastic NiTi and integrated into the finite-element model to account for the buckling behavior of superelastic NiTi *** shell-type buckling,column-type buckling and buckling–unbuckling phenomenon are reproduced and verified with experiments by varying the geometric parameters of NiTi tubes(i.e.,diameter-to-thickness ratio and aspect ratio).The reduction in material stiffness associated with the onset and progression of martensitic transformation facilitates column-type *** certain low-aspect-ratio(stout)tubes,unbuckling enables the buckled tube to resume straight configuration under monotonic contraction,which is confirmed to be a consequence of the unique stiff-soft-stiff material ***-type buckling occurs in thin-walled tubes,and it transits to column-type buckling as the tube length increases.A simple theoretical analysis is performed to establish the condition of each buckling type and reasonably good agreement with finite element simulations is *** present study will pave the way for the design of anti-buckling shape memory alloy components.

Restart-up Performance of a CFB Boiler after a Sudden Power Failure Accident

Due to the massive bed materials in its typical main loop,a circulating fluidized bed(CFB)boiler may face greater trouble in operation and restart-up if an unplanned sudden power failure happens in the power *** study aims to explore the restart-up performance of a 170 t/h natural circulation CFB boiler after a sudden power failure and evaluate whether the hot restart-up can be *** heat transfer process after the restoration of the primary air is *** the isothermal property of the bed after the restoration of the power and air supply,the correlation among the accident duration time,bed temperature after the power restores,inlet air temperature,air supply time,and air velocity is *** predicted results indicate that the major influencing factor of the bed temperature during this process is primary air *** provide guidelines for judgment on whether the hot restart-up can be realized,the maximum values of the air supply time and accident duration time for hot restart-up for different types of coals are *** results show both of them have a rapid decrease as the coal ignition temperature in a CFB boiler increases from 450°C to 650°C,which also means that the coal ignition temperature plays a very important role in the restart-up *** on the simulation results of bed temperature during the accident,it is also estimated that the drum level drops by 77.7 mm after 8 hours but still stays in the permissible range.

Trimetallic mesoporous PdCuRu for efficient formate electrosynthesis from polyethylene terephthalate recycling

Electrochemical recycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate（PET） plastics represents a green and sustainable route to produce valuable fuels and address serious environmental issues. Despite some encouraged achievements, their progress is still slower because of the lack of highly active and selective electrocatalysts. Here, we reported an efficient PET recycling route with trimetallic PdCuRu mesoporous nanospheres（MSs） as a high-performance electrocatalyst that achieved selective electrosynthesis of valuable formate from PET hydrolysate（PETH） electrooxidation. Penetrated metal mesopores and trimetallic compositions of PdCuRu MSs synergistically optimized electronic structures of Pd sites and changed chemisorption properties of intermediates, which disclosed a high formate Faradic efficiency of 97% and impressive yield rate of 0.49 mmol h-1cm-2in an alkaline solution. Meanwhile, this electrocatalyst held good electrocatalytic stability, retaining high formate Faradic efficiency and yield rate even being performed for 10 cycles, which highlighted its potential applications for practical PET recycling. Our study provides a powerful strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts toward selective electro-synthesis of valuable fuels from various waste plastics.
