Relay-intercropping soybean with maize maintains soil fertility and increases nitrogen recovery efficiency by reducing nitrogen input

Optimized nitrogen(N)management can increase N-use efficiency in intercropping ***-nonlegume intercropping systems can reduce N input by exploiting biological N fixation by *** of N utilization can help in dissecting the mechanisms underlying N uptake and utilization in legume-nonlegume intercropping *** experiment was performed with three planting patterns:monoculture maize(MM),monoculture soybean(SS),and maize-soybean relay intercropping(IMS),and three N application levels:zero N(NN),reduced N(RN),and conventional N(CN)to investigate crop N uptake and utilization characteristics.N recovery efficiency and 15N recovery rate of crops were higher under RN than under CN,and those under RN were higher under intercropping than under the corresponding *** with MM,IMS showed a lower soil N-dependent rate(SNDR)in ***,the SNDR of MM rapidly declined from 86.8%in 2012 to 49.4%in 2014,whereas that of IMS declined slowly from 75.4%in 2012 to 69.4%in *** interspecific N competition rate(NCRms)was higher under RN than under CN,and increased *** nodule dry weight and nitrogenase activities were respectively 34.2%and 12.5%higher under intercropping than in monoculture at the beginning seed *** amount(Ndfa)and ratio(%Ndfa)of soybean N2 fixation were significantly greater under IS than under *** conclusion,N fertilizer was more efficiently used under RN than under CN;in particular,the relay intercropping system promoted N fertilizer utilization in comparison with the corresponding *** intercropping system helps to maintain soil fertility because interspecific N competition promotes biological N fixation by soybean by reducing N ***,a maize-soybean relay intercropping system with reduced N application is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Effects of total dissolved gas supersaturated water on lethality and catalase activity of Chinese sucker(Myxocyprinus asiaticus Bleeker)

Total dissolved gas(TDG) supersaturation caused by dam sluicing can result in gas bubble trauma(GBT) in fish and threaten their *** the present study,Chinese suckers(Myxocyprinus asiaticus Bleeker) were exposed to TDG supersaturated water at levels ranging from 120% to 145% for 48 *** median lethal concentration(LC 50) and the median lethal time(LT 50) were determined to evaluate acute lethal effects on Chinese *** results showed that the LC 50 values of 4,6,8,and 10 h were 142%,137%,135%,and 130%,*** LT 50 values were 3.2,4.7,7.8,9.2,and 43.4 h,respectively,when TDG supersaturated levels were 145%,140%,135%,130%,and 125%.Furthermore,the biological responses in Chinese suckers were studied by assaying the catalase(CAT) activities in gills and muscles at the supersaturation level of 140% within LT *** CAT activities in the gills and muscle tissues exhibited a regularity of a decrease after an *** activities in the muscles were increased significantly at 3/5LT 50(P0.05),but the activities were significantly lower than the normal level at 4/5LT 50 and LT 50(P<0.05).

Adhesion behavior of endothelial progenitor cells to endothelial cells in simple shear flow

The adhesion of endothelial progenitor cells（EPCs） on endothelial cells（ECs） is one of the critical physiological processes for the regenesis of vascular vessels and the prevention of serious cardiovascular ***,the rolling and adhesion behavior of EPCs on ECs was studied numerically.A two-dimensional numerical model was developed based on the immersed boundary method for simulating the rolling and adhesion of cells in a channel *** binding force arising from the catch bond of a receptor and ligand pair was modeled with stochastic Monte Carlo method and Hookean spring *** effect of tumor necrosis factor alpha（TNF-α） on the expression of the number of adhesion molecules in ECs was analyzed experimentally.A flow chamber system with CCD camera was set up to observe the top view of the rolling of EPCs on the substrate cultivated with *** results prove that the adhesion of EPC on ECs is closely related to membrane stiff-ness of the cell and shear rate of the *** also suggests that the adhesion force between EPC and EC by P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 only is not strong enough to bond the cell onto vessel walls unless contributions of other catch bond are *** results demonstrate that TNF-α enhanced the expressions of VCAM,ICAM,P-selectin and E-selectin in ECs,which supports the numerical results that the rolling velocity of EPC on TNF-α treated EC substrate decreases obviously compared with its velocity on the untreated *** is found that because the adhesion is affected by both the rolling velocity and the deformability of the cell,an optimal stiffness of EPC may exist at a given shear rate of flow for achieving maximum adhesion rates.

Sensory and motor nerve fibers of peripheral nerves have different anatomies and regeneration functions after injury. To gain a clear understanding of the biological processes behind these differences, we used a labeling technique termed isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation to investigate the protein profiles of spinal nerve tissues from Sprague-Dawley rats. In response to Wallerian degeneration, a total of 626 proteins were screened in sensory nerves, of which 368 were upregulated and 258 were downregulated. In addition, 637 proteins were screened in motor nerves, of which 372 were upregulated and 265 were downregulated. All identified proteins were analyzed using the Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis of bioinformatics, and the presence of several key proteins closely related to Wallerian degeneration were tested and verified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. The differentially expressed proteins only identified in the sensory nerves were mainly relevant to various biological processes that included cell-cell adhesion, carbohydrate metabolic processes and cell adhesion, whereas differentially expressed proteins only identified in the motor nerves were mainly relevant to biological processes associated with the glycolytic process, cell redox homeostasis, and protein folding. In the aspect of the cellular component, the differentially expressed proteins in the sensory and motor nerves were commonly related to extracellular exosomes, the myelin sheath, and focal adhesion. According to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes, the differentially expressed proteins identified are primarily related to various types of metabolic pathways. In conclusion, the present study screened differentially expressed proteins to reveal more about the differences and similarities between sensory and motor nerves during Wallerian degeneration. Evaluation and Application of Two High-Iron Transgenic Rice lines Expressing a Pea Ferritin Gene

A total of 105 transgenic dce lines independently transformed with a pea ferritin gene （Fer） were previously obtained. After seven generations of selfing and β-glucuronidase （GUS） assisted selection, 82 transgenic lines with stable agronomic traits were got. Among the 82 transgenic lines, two high-iron transgenic rice lines Fer34 and Fer65, with the iron contents in the milled rice being 4.82 and 3.46 times of that of the wild type Xiushui 11, respectively were identified. In the two transgenic lines, the exogenous Fer gene was highly expressed, and inherited as a single locus. The transgene had no negative effect on the agronomic traits of rice plant, other mineral nutritional components, appearance quality and eating quality of the milled rice, indicating that these two lines were elite high-iron breeding lines. Furthermore, the practical application and further studies facilitating utilization of the two elite breeding lines were discussed.
