A Robust N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Assay for Clinical Diagnosis of Heart Failure in Elderly Patients

Heart failure(HF)is a clinical hallmark of cardiovascular syndrome leading to substantial morbidity,repeated hospitalization,and enormous healthcare expenditure.As elderly populations continue to increase,biomarker-guided diagnosis and treatment for age-related cardiac decline have become essential.Accumulating evidence demonstrates that N-terminal proBNP(NT-proBNP)can provide a unique window into the diagnosis and risk stratification with HF.Herein,a simple yet robust aptasensor is developed for on-site recognizing the NT-proBNP by its targeting aptamer,thus achieving the accurate diagnosis of HF.This aptasensing system is prepared by absorbing the fluorophore-labeled aptamer strand onto the graphene oxide(GO),leading to efficient quenching without possible off-site signal leakage.The aptamer strand can specifically identify target NT-proBNP molecules via a versatile conformational transformation,resulting in the desorption of the aptamer-NTproBNP complexes from GO and re-generation fluorescence signal,thus allowing sensitive detection of NT-proBNP in 37 clinical blood samples.Taking advantage of the high specificity of aptamer-guaranteed recognitions of NT-proBNP,this aptasensor system readily achieves better diagnostic performance for HF than commercially adopted chemiluminescence immunoassay(Siemens,CLIA)in hospitals in terms of accuracy(89.2%vs 83.8%),specificity(89.5%vs 84.2%),and positive predictive value(88.9%vs 83.3%).This work provides a stable option for the diagnosis and treatment of elderly HF-related diseases inclinics.

Characteristics and influencing factors of greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs in the Yellow River Basin:A Meta-analysis

Reservoir construction and operation profoundly alter the hydrological,hydrodynamic,and carbon and nitrogen cycling processes of rivers.However,current research still lacks a systematic understanding of the characteristics of greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions from reservoirs in arid/semi-arid regions.This study integrates existing monitoring data to discuss the characteristics of GHG emissions from reservoirs in the Yellow River Basin and illustrate the controlling factors and underlying mechanism of these processes.The results indicate that while CO_(2) emission flux from reservoirs is lower than that from river channels,the emission fluxes of CH_(4) and N_(2)O are 1.9 times and 10 times those from rivers,respectively,indicating that the emission of GHG with stronger radiative effect is significantly enhanced in reservoirs.Compared to the reservoirs in humid climates(e.g.,the Three Gorges Reservoir),reservoirs in the Yellow River Basin exhibit relatively lower emissions of CO_(2) and CH_4 due to lower organic matter concentrations,but significantly higher N_(2)O emissions due to higher nitrogen loads.Monte Carlo simulations for 237 reservoirs in the Yellow River Basin showed that total emission of the three GHGs is 3.05 Tg CO_(2)-eq yr^(-1),accounting for 0.39% of the total emission from global reservoirs and lower than the area percentage of the basin(0.53%).This study has important implications on revealing the GHG emission characteristics and control mechanisms of reservoirs in arid/semi-arid regions.

Enhancing the thermoelectric transport properties of conductive polymer materials has been a long-term challenge, in spite of the success seen with molecular doping strategies. However, the strong coupling between the thermopower and the electrical conductivity limits thermoelectric performance. Here, we use polaron interfacial occupied entropy engineering to break through this intercoupling for a PEDOT:PSS(poly（3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene）-poly（4-styrenesulfonate）) thin film by using photochromic diarylethene（DAE） dopants coupled with UV-light modulation. With a 10-fold enhancement of the thermopower from 13.5 μV K-1to 135.4 μV K-1and almost unchanged electrical conductivity, the DAE-doped PEDOT:PSS thin film achieved an extremely high power factor of 521.28 μW m-1K-2from an original value of 6.78 μW m-1K-2. The thermopower was positively correlated with the UV-light intensity but decreased with increasing temperature, indicating resonant coupling between the planar closed DAE molecule and PEDOT. Both the experiments and theoretical calculations consistently confirmed the formation of an interface state due to this resonant coupling. Interfacial entropy engineering of polarons could play a critical role in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the organic film.

Metabolic plasticity of T cell fate decision

The efficacy of adaptive immune responses in cancer treatment relies heavily on the state of the T cells. Upon antigen exposure, T cells undergo metabolic reprogramming, leading to the development of functional effectors or memory populations. However, within the tumor microenvironment (TME), metabolic stress impairs CD8+ T cell anti-tumor immunity, resulting in exhausted differentiation. Recent studies suggested that targeting T cell metabolism could offer promising therapeutic opportunities to enhance T cell immunotherapy. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors necessary for metabolic reprogramming during the development of effector and memory T cells in response to acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, we delved into the different metabolic switches that occur during T cell exhaustion, exploring how prolonged metabolic stress within the TME triggers alterations in cellular metabolism and the epigenetic landscape that contribute to T cell exhaustion, ultimately leading to a persistently exhausted state. Understanding the intricate relationship between T cell metabolism and cancer immunotherapy can lead to the development of novel approaches to improve the efficacy of T cell-based treatments against cancer.

Recycling of waste aluminum scraps to fabricate sulfidated zero-valent iron-aluminum particles for enhanced chromate removal

Massive waste aluminum scraps produced from the spent aluminum products have high electron capacity and can be recycled as an attractive alternative to materials based on zerovalent iron(Fe^(0))for the removal of oxidative contaminants from wastewater.This study thus proposed an approach to fabricate micron-sized sulfidated zero-valent iron-aluminum particles(S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0))with high reactivity,electron selectivity and capacity using recycled waste aluminum scraps.S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0)with a three-layer structure contained zero-valent aluminum(Al^(0))core,Fe^(0) middle layer and iron sulfide(FeS)shell.The rates of chromate(Cr(Ⅵ))removal by S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0)at pH 5.0-9.0 were 1.6-5.9 times greater than that by sulfidated zero-valent iron(S-Fe^(0)).The Cr(Ⅵ)removal capacity of S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0)was 8.2-,11.3-and 46.9-fold greater than those of S-Fe0,zero-valent iron-aluminum(Al^(0)-Fe^(0))and Fe^(0),respectively.The chemical cost of S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0) for the equivalent Cr(Ⅵ)removal was 78.5%lower than that of S-Fe^(0).Negligible release of soluble aluminum during the Cr(Ⅵ)removal was observed.The significant enhancement in the reactivity and capacity of S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0)was partially ascribed to the higher reactivity and electron density of the Al0core than Fe^(0).More importantly,S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0) served as an electric cell to harness the persistent and selective electron transfer from the Al^(0)-Fe^(0) core to Cr(Ⅵ)at the surface via coupling Fe^(0)-Fe^(2+)-Fe^(3+)redox cycles,resulting in a higher electron utilization efficiency.Therefore,S-Al^(0)@Fe^(0) fabricated using recycled waste aluminum scraps can be a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to S-Fe^(0) for the enhanced removal of oxidative contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Adaptable "bubble particles" prepared by green aqueous phase reshaping for completely removing odor

Facile and ecofriendly loading of micro/nano function-specific substances to create functional materials is a trend being pursued by researchers.However,current micro/nano particles loading approaches are often hindered by issues such as uneven distribution,unsatisfactory stability and complicate procedure.In this work,we present an aqueous phase reshaping method that only utilizes the moisture to fabricate the"bubble particles",which could perfectly cater to the topography of the substrate.The green preparation of bubble particles adopts an absolutely zero-pollution method,realizing the firm loading of particles on the substrate.Integrating the preparation and loading of particles overcomes the traditional complicate process,while the aqueous phase reshaping ensures uniform and firm loading of the"bubble particles"onto the substrate.Our mechanism demonstrates a significant enhancement in the interface relation after aqueous phase reshaping,with a 121-fold increase in contact surface area achieved by reducing the height by 1μm.Furthermore,we explore for the first time the influence of the nature of the receiving substrate on the interface morphology of particles during electrostatic spraying,which has important guiding significance for the interface relationship of electrostatic spraying and even electrostatic spinning materials.We also screen out the natural antibacterial essential oil linalool as the effective specialized antibacterial agent,which can specifically inhibit the odor-producing Proteus in urine,with an antibacterial rate of up to 100%.Taken together,this simple,ecofriendly method for fabricating functional materials with optimal interface stability appears highly promising for use in various products formed by electrostatic spraying/spinning.

Superwetting Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) anchored mesh with enhanced photocatalytic and antibacterial activities for efficient water purification

Superwetting materials have drawn unprecedented attention in the treatment of oily wastewater due to their preferable anti-fouling property and selective oil/water separation.However,it is still a challenge to fabricate multifunctional and environmentally friendly materials,which can be stably applied to purify the actual complicated wastewater.Here,a Ag/Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) heterostructure anchored copper mesh was intentionally synthesized using a facile two-step hydrothermal method.The resultant mesh with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity was capable of separating various oil/water mixtures with superior separation efﬁciency and high permeationﬂux driven by gravity.Beneﬁting from the joint effects of the smaller band gap of Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) heterojunction,inherent antibacterial capacity of Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) and Ag nanoparticles,favorable conductive substrate,as well as the hierarchical structure with superwettability,such mesh presented remarkably enhanced degradation capability toward organic dyes under visible light irradiation and antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli(E.coli)and Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)compared with the pure Ag/α-Fe_(2)O_(3) coated mesh.Impressively,the mesh exhibited bifunctional water puriﬁcation performance,in which organic dyes were eliminated simultaneously from water during oil/water separation in oneﬁltration process.More importantly,this mesh behaved exceptional chemical resistance,mechanical stability and long-term reusability.Therefore,this material with multifunctional integration may hold promising potential for steady water puriﬁcation in practice.

Modeling Morning Commute with Different Kinds of Activities Based on Bottleneck Model

Morning commute problem has always been concerned by researchers in transportation research field.For the bottleneck existing in the road network between home and school,this paper studies the household travel with different kinds of activities,i.e.,home-school-home trip and home-school-workplace trip.Individuals just send their children to school and then go home,which is named school travel.Individuals need to send their children to school firstly and then go to work,which is named household travel.Firstly,according to the proportions of two types of travelers and school-work start time difference,the possible equilibrium cases are solved and the conditions for the occurrence of each case are revealed.Different from the traditional bottleneck model with a unique equilibrium traffic pattern,the mixed travel case has six possible equilibrium traffic patterns.Secondly,the cost of traveler is analyzed for all possible equilibrium traffic patterns.Result shows that equilibrium trip costs of two types of travelers are more sensitive to the number of travelers in that class than the number in another class in all possible equilibrium cases.Finally,the influence of school-work start time difference on the total travel cost is discussed.Result shows that the total system travel cost can be reduced by appropriately adjusting the difference of school-work start time.

Bifurcation analysis and optimal control of COVID-19 with exogenous reinfection and media coverages

In this paper,a SEIR epidemic model related to media coverage and exogenous reinfections is established to explore the transmission dynamics of COVID-19.The basic reproduction number is calculated using the next generation matrix method.First,the existence of equilibrium points is investigated,and different kinds of equilibrium points indicate that the disease may disappear,or exist that result in different quantity of susceptible individuals,pre-symptomatic infected individuals and symptomatic infected individuals.The stability of the equilibria is discussed by a geometric approach,and it is found that controlling reproduction number to be lower than 1 is not suficient for eradication of COVID-19.Second,transcritical bifurcation is explored,and it is found that improving the ratio of exogenous reinfection may lead to backward bifurcation under poor medical conditions,which indicates that two endemic equilibrium points appear.Third,to investigate the infuence of parameters on the basic reproduction,sensitivity analysis is done to choose relatively sensitive parameters,and the parameters for treatment and media coverage are selected.An optimal control model is established to balance the treatment and media awareness.By exploring the existence and the uniqueness of the optimal control solution,the optimal control strategies are given.Finally,we run numerical simulations to verify the theoretical analysis on actual data of China,and the data from the four different states of India is used for forecasting the situation of infected individuals in a short period.It is found by the simulation that the co-function of treatment and media coverage results in the reduced number of infectious individuals.

Li_(7)La_(3)Zr_(2)O_(12)(LLZO)is considered as a promising solid-state electrolyte due to its high ionic conductivity,wide electrochemical window,and excellent electrochemical stability.However,its application in solid-state lithium metal batteries(SSLMBs)is impeded by the growth of lithium dendrites in LLZO due to some reasons such as its high electronic conductivity.In this study,lithium fluoride(LiF)was introduced into Ta-doped LLZO(LLZTO)to modify its grain boundaries to enhance the performance of SSLMBs.A nanoscale LiF layer was uniformly coated on the LLZTO grains,creating a threedimensional continuous electron-blocking network at the grain boundaries.Benefiting from the electronic insulator LiF and the special structure of the modified LLZTO,the symmetric cells based on LLZO achieved a high critical current density(CCD)of 1.1 mA·cm^(-2)(in capacity-constant mode)and maintained stability over 2000 h at 0.3 mA·cm^(-2).Moreover,the full cells combined with a LiFePO_(4)(LFP)cathode,demonstrated excellent cycling performance,retaining 97.1% of capacity retention after 500 cycles at 0.5 C.Therefore,this work provides a facile and effective approach for preparing a modified electrolyte suitable for high-performance SSLMBs.
