AIm.To evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) in early esophageal cancer(EC) perform.d in a highvolum. tertiary cancer center. m.THODS A retrospective review of patients undergoing esophagectom. was perform.d and patients with c T1 N0 and c T2 N0 esophageal cancer by EUS were evaluated. Patient dem.graphics, tum.r characteristics, and treatm.nt were reviewed. EUS staging was com.ared to surgical pathology to determ.ne accuracy of EUS. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the cohort. Student's t test and Fisher's exact test or χ~2 test was used to com.are variables. Logistic regression analysis was used to determ.ne if clinical variables such as tum.r location and tum.r histology were associated with EUS *** Between 2000 and 2015, 139 patients with clinical stage Ⅰ or Ⅱ?A esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectom. were identified. There were 25(18%) fem.le and 114(82%) m.le patients. The tum.r location included the m.ddle third of the esophagus in 11(8%) and lower third and gastroesophageal junction in 128(92%) patients. Ninety-three percent of patients had adenocarcinom.. Preoperative EUS m.tched the final surgical pathology in 73/139 patients for a concordance rate of 53%. Twenty-nine patients(21%) were under-staged by EUS; of those, 19(14%) had unrecognized nodal disease. Positron em.ssion tom.graphy(PET) was used in addition to EUS for clinical staging in 62/139 patients. Occult nodal disease was only found in 4 of 62 patients(6%) in whom.both EUS and PET were negative for nodal involvem.nt. CONCLUSION EUS is less accurate in early EC and endoscopic m.cosal resection m.ght be useful in certain settings. The addition of PET to EUS im.roves staging accuracy.

Cutleaf teasel (Dipsacus laciniatus L.) is an invasive plant that is spreading through natural and disturbed areas. Teasel grows for two or m.re years as a rosette which stays green late in the growing season and begins growth earlier in spring than its native com.etitors. The purpose of this study was to find a tim. both seasonally and in cutleaf teasel’s life history when herbicides could be applied to decrease teasel with the least im.act on the surrounding vegetation. We tested the effects of three different herbicides (glyphosate (Round-UpTm., triclopyr am.ne (GarlonTm., and clopyralid (LontrelTm.) on cut and uncut teasel at three different tim.s of the year (July and October 2005, and April 2006) near Clinton Lake in Dewitt Co. Illinois. Photosynthetic m.asurem.nts were taken before application to determ.ne teasel’s susceptibility to the herbicides, and we harvested seed heads and rosettes in late October 2006. Results indicated teasel was photosynthetically active at all three application tim.s. Cutting before herbicide application had no significant effect on the num.er of seeds produced or the dry weight of the rosettes. Herbicide treatm.nt in April significantly reduced the am.unt of seeds produced, but there were no significant differences am.ng the three herbicides. Clopyralid application in April significantly reduced rosette biom.ss, but none of the herbicides significantly affected rosette biom.ss at the other two tim.s. Our studies suggest herbicide application early in the growing season m.y be beneficial in controlling the spread of teasel, and that m.wing at the tim. of spraying will not increase effectiveness of the herbicide.

m.ss-transfer studies of catalyst-aided CO_(2) absorption and desorption were perform.d in a full-cycle,bench-scale pilot plant to im.rove CO_(2) absorption using 5m.m.A,5m.m.A-2m.m.EA and 2m.BEA-2m.Am..A solid-base catalyst,K/m.O,and an acid catalyst,HZSm.5,were used to facilitate absorption and desorption,*** and desorption m.ss-transfer perform.nce was presented in term. of the overall m.ss-transfer coefficient of the gas side(KGav)and liquid side(K_(L)a_(v)),*** non-catalytic runs,the highest K_(G)a_(V) and K_(L)a_(V) were 0.086 Km.l m.(3).*** and 0.7851 hr for 2m.BEA-2m.Am. *** results showed 38.7% KGav and 23.6% K_(L)a_(v) increase for 2m.BEA-2m.Am. with only HZSm.5 catalyst in desorber and a 95% K_(G)a_(V) and 45% K_(L)a_(V) increase for both K/m.O catalyst and HZSm.5 *** was attributed to the role of K/m.O in bonding loosely with CO_(2) and m.king it available for the am.ne reaction.

Background: Currently, surgical resection represents the only curative treatm.nt for pancreatic cancer(PC), however, the m.jority of tum.rs are no longer resectable by the tim. of diagnosis. The aim.of this study was to describe tim. trends and distribution of pancreaticoduodenectom.es(PDs) perform.d for treating PC in Brazil in recent years. m.thods: Data were retrospectively obtained from.Brazilian Health Public System.nam.ly DATASUS) regarding hospitalizations for PC and PD in Brazil from.January 2008 to Decem.er 2015. PC and PD rates and their m.rtalities were estim.ted from.DATASUS hospitalizations and analyzed for age, gender and dem.graphic characteristics. Results: A total of 2364 PDs were retrieved. Albeit PC incidence m.re than doubled, the num.er of PDs increased only 37%. m.st PDs were perform.d in m.n(52.2%) and patients between 50 and 69 years old(59.5%). Patients not surgically treated and those 70 years or older had the highest in-hospital m.rtality rates. The m.st developed regions(Southeast and South) as well as large m.tropolitan integrated m.nicipalities registered 76.2% and 54.8% of the procedures, respectively. Lm.m.PD m.rtality fluctuated, ranging from.13.6% in 2008 to 11.8% in 2015. Conclusions: This study suggests a trend towards regionalization and volum.-outcom. relationships for PD due to PC, as large m.tropolitan integrated m.nicipalities registered m.st of the PDs and m.re stable m.rtality rates. The substantial differences between PD and PC increasing rates reveals a lim.ting step on the health system.resoluteness. Reduction in the num.er of hospital beds and late access to hospitalization, despite im.rovem.nt in diagnostic m.thods, could at least in part explain these findings.

During artificial spawning of salm.nids, activated sperm.is allowed to rem.in in contact with eggs for variable durations. This study exam.ned m.ltiple residence tim.s (20, 40, 60, 90, or 120 seconds) for activated sperm.on landlocked fall Chinook salm.n (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) eggs during spawning. There was no significant difference in egg survival to the eyed-stage of developm.nt or to hatch am.ng any of the treatm.nts, with a m.an (SE) percent survival to the eyed stage of 63.9 (5.8). These results indicate that only relatively short residence tim.s of activated m.lt on eggs during landlocked fall Chinook salm.n spawning are needed to ensure egg survival, resulting in potentially substantial reductions in production-level spawning tim.s and associated labor costs.
