Impact of male condition on his spermatophore and consequences for female reproductive performance in the Glanville fritillary butterfly

In butterflies, male reproductive success is highly related to the quality and the size of the spermatophore transferred to the female. The spermatophore is a capsule produced by the male during copulation, which in many species contains sperm in addition to a nuptial gift, and which is digested by the female after copulation. The nuptial gift may contribute to egg production and offspring quality, and in some cases also to female body maintenance. The production of the spermatophore, however, represents a cost for the male and, in polyandrous species, ejaculates are sometimes allocated adaptively across matings. Nonetheless, although the ecological factors affecting the reproductive success of female butterflies have been the topic of numerous studies, little information exists on the factors affecting males＇ contribution to reproduction, and the indirect impacts on female fecundity and fitness. We used the Glanville fritillary butterfly, Melitaea cinxia （Linnaeus, 1758）（Nymphalidae）, in order to assess variation in male allocation to matings. In this species, smaller males produce smaller spermatophores, but variation in spermatophore size is not correlated with female reproductive success. We show that spermatophore size increases with male age at first mating, decreases with mating frequency and adult food-deprivation, and is not influenced by developmental food-limitation. The length of copulation period does not influence the spermatophore size nor influences the polyandrous mating behavior in this species. Male contribution to his spermatophore size is clearly influenced by his condition and adult-resource at the time of mating. Despite this variation, spermatophore size does not seem to have a direct impact on female reproductive output or mating behavior.

Efficacy of rehabilitation program in addition to pharmacological treatment during 8 months in Parkinson patients

Objective: To compare 8-month effects ofmedical treatment plusrehabilitation on UPDRs scores ofparkinsonian patientswith that ofmedical treatment ***: Longtudinal randomized study. Participants:27 parkinsonian patients (69.50 ± 10.34 years). We divided our patient into two groups: control group (n = 9, received only medication therapy) and experiment- tal group (n = 18, received physiccal therapy and medication therapy). Intervention:The 8-month exercise interventions were twice-weekly 90-min sessions in group. UPDRs scales were measured before and after the interventions. Results: Two- factor ANOVA analyses revealed a significant main effect fromrehabilitation (p 0.05). Post-hoc analysis shows that UPDRs motor increased in control group (+37%) meanwhile decreased in experimental group (–17%). UPDRs ADL increased significantly more in control group (+26%) than experimental group (+5%).UPDRs total increased in control group (+33%) meanwhile decreased in experimental group(–11%). Conclusions:The results of the study suggest that exercise interventions should be a necessary ongoing adjunct toparkinson’s diseasemedication.

Assessment of the Acoustic Impact of Wind Farm Projects: Methodology and Case

Wind energy is a clean renewable and its benefits are considered greater than the disadvantages. However, even though wind farms represent environmentally friendly projects, they frequently generate public resistance. Wind turbines are socially controversial because of their visual and acoustic impacts. The aim of this work was to design a methodology for the preliminary evaluation of potential acoustic impact of wind farms. Three steps have been proposed: identification, characterization and assessment of the acoustic impact during the construction, operation and decommissioning phase. Obtained results in the studied area suggested that at a maximum power, at 500 meters of wind turbines, noise level is lower than the reference level established in the legislation. In summary, proposed methodology could help to determine and to evaluate the best location for new wind farm projects. Moreover, this method could be used as a consulting tool for public organizations and private institutions, being quick, concise and clear. Obtained results for the studied wind farm project suggested that almost all the area showed noise levels lower than established background noise level.

Maintaining flexibility in smart grid consumption through deep learning and deep reinforcement learning

The smart grid concept is key to the energy revolution that has been taking place in recent *** Grids have been present in energy research since their ***,the scarcity of data from different energy sources,hardware power,or co-simulation environments has hindered their *** advances in multi-agent-based systems,the possibility of simulating the behavior of different energy sources,combining real building consumption,and simulated data,storage batteries and vehicle charging points,has opened *** development has resulted in much research published using both simulated and physical *** these investigations show that the main problem is that the machine learning algorithms do not fully match the real behavior,it is complex to use them to replicate the different actions to be *** paper aims to combine the approach of behavior prediction with state-of-the-art techniques,such as deep learning and deep reinforcement learning,to simulate unknown or critical system scenarios.A very important element in smart grids is the possibility of maintaining consumption within specific ranges(flexibility).For this purpose,we have made use of Tensorflow libraries that predict energy consumption and deep reinforcement learning to select the optimal actions to be performed in our *** developed platform is flexible enough to include new technologies such as smart batteries,electric vehicles,etc.,and it is oriented to real-time operation,being applied in an on-going real project such as the European ebalance-plus project.

Mater nal effects occur whe n the phe no type of the mother in flue nces that of the young to the detriment of her survival, growth or fitn ess. The in vestment of the mother can be affected by mater nal body condition and/or experience. Trivers-Willard Hypothesis (TWH) and Local Resource Competition Hypothesis (LRCH) are the main hypotheses used to explain bias in birth sex-ratios in mammals, as well as for sex-biased maternal investment. Both hypotheses suggest that a different amount of investment must be expected according to the sex of the young. However, recent studies suggest that these differences are not in quantity but in the strategies: mechanisms and objectives may differ for each sex. We studied how maternal characteristics (age, body mass, body condition, and domi nance status) influence re leva nt aspects of the birth and early growth of the calf (birth date, birth body mass, body mass at weaning, and body condition at weaning) separately for each sex;and how that investment is mediated by milk production and composition (lactose, fat, and protein). One hundred eighty-eight newborns from 75 captive red deer hinds aged from 2 to 19 years were analyzed. The main differential investment observed was related to birth date: when producing a female, hinds give birth earlier in the season only if they have a good body condition;however, when gestating a male it is the older hinds those which deliver earlier. subsequently, milk production and composition are correlated with birth body mass in female calves, but to weaning body mass in males. Thus, only hind body mass affects the weaning body mass of female calves, compared with age and hind body mass in males. These results suggest that while TWH fits the maternal investment strategy found for male calves, it is LRCH which correlates with the maternal investment patterns observed for females.

Resistance to the Whitefly Aleurotrachelus socialis(Hemiptera:Aleyrodidae) and ssR Marker Identification in Advanced Populations of the Hybrid Manihot esculenta *** flabellifolia

Genes resistant to Aleurotrachelus socialis were transferred to the F 1 from the interspecific hybrid wild species of Manihot flabellifolia to *** and two advanced generations of backcrosses（BC 1 and BC 2）.We characterized the resistance of *** transferred to BC 2 parents（CW67-160,CW67-130,CW67-44）,MTAI-8（BC 1）,resistant（CMB9B-73） and susceptible（CMB9B-104） genotypes from contrasting pools,and resistant（MEcu-72） and susceptible（CMC-40） *** demography and biology were *** molecular markers associated with a phenotypic response of plant resistance were detected in segregating populations（BC 2）.Results showed that although female survival time was similar on all hosts,the lowest averages of longevity,fecundity and oviposition rate were observed in the resistant control MEcu- 72,only being significantly similar to the parent *** the BC 1 and BC 2 populations were compared,it was found that *** fecundity was eight times lower on CMB9B-73 progeny than on CW67-130,expressing the highest levels of resistance to the *** genotypes of CMB9A and CMB9B family had the best segregation.A total of 486 microsatellite primers were evaluated using bulked segregant analysis（BsA）,11 showed polymorphism between the contrasting pools and only one showed significant differences between resistant and susceptible *** conclusion,fecundity was the parameter that impacted most on the intrinsic rate of *** population growth.
