In recent years,growing awareness of the role of oxidative stress in brain health has prompted antioxidants,especially dietary antioxidants,to receive growing attention as possible treatments strategies for patients with neurodegenerative diseases(NDs).The most widely studied dietary antioxidants include active substances such as vitamins,carotenoids,flavonoids and *** antioxidants are found in usually consumed foods such as fresh fruits,vegetables,nuts and oils and are gaining popularity due to recently growing awareness of their potential for preventive and protective agents against NDs,as well as their abundant natural sources,generally non-toxic nature,and ease of long-term *** review article examines the role of oxidative stress in the development of NDs,explores the‘two-sidedness’of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)as a protective barrier to the nervous system and an impeding barrier to the use of antioxidants as drug medicinal products and/or dietary antioxidants supplements for prevention and therapy and reviews the BBB permeability of common dietary antioxidant suplements and their potential efficacy in the prevention and treatment of ***,current challenges and future directions for the prevention and treatment of NDs using dietary antioxidants are discussed,and useful information on the prevention and treatment of NDs is provided.

Climatic conditions affect the richness of ants resulting in number variation throughout the year. The ants present in the Neotropical system Acacia-Pseudomyrmex have been previously studied considering only one sampling season. In contrast, in this study we analyze the richness in two ant-acacia systems during the rainy and dry seasons. The study was carried out on a plot located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico where 14 ant species, 3 mutualistic and 11 non-mutualistic were found, of which 2 represent new records for the state. Ant species number differed between ant-acacia species and between seasons. The highest richness was recorded in Acacia hindsii in both rainy and dry seasons, corresponding with a low-reward host. During the dry season, A. hindsii represents a highly valuable resource. This study shows that the neotropical system is much more dynamic than it has been previously considered and offers a valuable opportunity for subsequent ecological studies for a better understanding of this complex system.

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a spore-forming, toxin-producing, gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that is the principal etiologic agent of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Infection with C. difficile (CDI) is characterized by diarrhea in clinical syndromes that vary from selflimited to mild or severe. since its initial recognition as the causative agent of pseudomembranous colitis, C. difficile has spread around the world. CDI is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among older adult hospitalized patients. Due to extensive antibiotic usage, the number of CDIs has increased. Diagnosis of CDI is often difficult and has a substantial impact on the management of patients with the disease, mainly with regards to antibiotic management. The diagnosis of CDI is primarily based on the clinical signs and symptoms and is only confirmed by laboratory testing. Despite the high burden of CDI and the increasing interest in the disease, episodes of CDI are often misdiagnosed. The reasons for misdiagnosis are the lack of clinical suspicion or the use of inappropriate tests. The proper diagnosis of CDI reduces transmission, prevents inadequate or unnecessary treatments, and assures best antibiotic treatment. We review the options for the laboratory diagnosis of CDI within the settings of the most accepted guidelines for CDI diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CDI.

Tailing ponds pose environmental hazards, such as toxic metals which can contaminate the surroundings through wind and water erosions and leaching. Various chemical and biochemical properties, together with extractable and soluble metals were measured five years after reclamation of a polluted soil affected by former mining activities. This abandoned mine site contains large amounts of Fe-oxyhydroxides, sulphates, and heavy metals. As a consequence, soils remain bare and the soil organic matter content is low （〈 3 g kg-1）. Marble waste, pig manure and sewage sludge were applied in 2004. Plant cover and richness, and soil chemical, biochemical and biological parameters were analysed five years later. Results showed that all soil biochemical properties as well as vegetation cover and richness were higher in treated soils than in the untreated contaminated plots （control）, although organic matter, pH values and extractable metals concentrations were similar among treatments. soluble cadmium and zinc were lower in the amended plots than in control.

We report electronic properties of a hydrogen atom encaged by an endohedral cavity under the influence of a weak plasma interaction. Weimplement a finite-difference approach to solve the schrodinger equation for a hydrogen atom embedded in an endohedral cavity modeled by theWoods-saxon potential with well depth V0, inner radius R0, thickness D, and smooth parameter g. The plasma interaction is described by aDebye-Hu¨ckel screening potential that characterizes the plasma in terms of a Debye screening length lD. The electronic properties of theendohedral hydrogen atom are reported for selected endohedral cavity well depths, V0, and screening lengths, lD, that emulate differentconfinement and plasma conditions. We find that for low screening lengths, the endohedral cavity potential dominates over the plasma interaction by confining the electron within the cavity. For large screening lengths, a competition between both interactions is observed. We assessand report the photo-ionization cross section, dipole polarizability, mean excitation energy, and electronic stopping cross section as function of lD and V0. We find a decrease of the generalized Oscillator strength (gOs) when the final excitation is to an s state as the plasma screeninglength decreases. For a final excitation into a p state, we find an increase in the gOs as the endohedral cavity well-depth increases. For the caseof the electronic stopping cross section, we find that the plasma screening and endohedral cavity effects are larger in the low-to-intermediateprojectile energies for all potential well depths considered. Our results agree well to available theoretical and experimental data and are afirst step towards the understanding of dipole and generalized oscillator strength dependent properties of an atom in extreme conditions encagedby an endohedral cavity immersed in a plasma medium.

AIM: To evaluate the feasibility, reproducibility and efficacy of a new tissue anchoring device in a porcine survival model. METHODs: gastrotomies were performed using a needle-knife and balloon dilator in 10 female Yorkshire pigs weighing 30-35 kg. gastric closure was attempted using a new tissue anchoring device. The tightness of the closure was confirmed by means of air insufflation and the ability to maintain gastric distension with stability in peritoneal pressure measured with a Veress needle. All animals were monitored daily for signs of peritonitis and sepsis over 14 d. During necropsy, the peritoneal cavity and the gastric access site were ***: Transgastric access, closure and 14 d survival was achieved in all pigs. The mean closure time was 18.1 ± 19.2 min and a mean of 2.1 ± 1 devices were used. supplementary clips were necessary in 2 cases. The closure time was progressively reduced (24.8 ± 13.9 min in the first 5 pigs vs 11.4 ± 5.9 min in the last 5, P = Ns). At necropsy, the gastric access site was correctly closed in all cases with all brace-bars present. One device was misplaced in the mesocolon. Minimal adhesions were observed in 3 pigs and signs of mild peritonitis and adhesions in one. CONCLUsIONs: The use of this new tissue anchoring device in porcine stomachs is feasible, reproducible and effective and requires a short learning curve.
