Baird’s tapir density in high elevation forests of the Talamanca region of Costa Rica

Baird’s tapir(Tapirus bairdii)is currently endangered throughout its neotropical range with an expected popula--lished in Valle del silencio within Parque Internacional La Amistad(PILA).seventy-seven tapir pictures of 15 individuals comprising 25 capture-recapture events were analyzed using mark-recapture *** 100%minimum convex polygon of the sampled area was 5.7 km2 and the effective sampled area using half mean max-imum distances moved by tapirs was 7.16 *** estimated a tapir density of 2.93 individuals/km2 which rep-resents the highest density reported for this *** valleys can represent unique and important habitats for large mammal ***,the extent of isolation of this population,potentially constrained by steep slopes of the cordillera,remains *** genetic and movement studies are required to un-derstand meta-population dynamics and connectivity between lowland and highland areas for Baird’s tapir con-servation in Costa Rica.

A tabletop X-ray tomography instrument for nanometer-scale imaging: reconstructions

We show three-dimensional reconstructions of a region of an integrated circuit from a 130 nm copper *** reconstructions employ x-ray computed tomography,measured with a new and innovative high-magnification x-ray *** instrument uses a focused electron beam to generate x-rays in a 100 nm spot and energy-resolving x-ray detectors that minimize backgrounds and hold promise for the identification of materials within the *** x-ray generation target,a layer of platinum,is fabricated on the circuit wafer itself.A region of interest is imaged from a limited range of angles and without physically removing the region from the larger *** reconstruction is consistent with the circuit's design file.

Control of electron beam current,charge,and energy spread using density downramp injection in laser wakefield accelerators

Density downramp injection has been demonstrated to be an elegant and efficient approach for generating high-quality electron beams in laser wakefield *** studies have demonstrated the possibilities of generating electron beams with charges ranging from tens to hundreds of picocoulombs while maintaining good beam ***,the plasma and laser parameters in these studies have been limited to specific ranges or attention has been focused on separate physical processes such as beam loading,which affects the uniformity of the accelerating field and thus the energy spread of the trapped electrons,the repulsive force from the rear spike of the bubble,which reduces the transverse momentum P⊥of the trapped electrons and results in small beam emittance,and the laser evolution when traveling in the *** this work,we present a comprehensive numerical study of downramp injection in the laser wakefield,and we demonstrate that the current profile of the injected electron beam is directly correlated with the density transition parameters,which further affects the beam charge and energy *** fine-tuning the plasma density parameters,electron beams with high charge(up to several hundreds of picocoulombs)and low energy spread(around 1%FWHM)can be *** these results are supported by large-scale quasi-threedimensional particle-in-cell *** anticipate that the electron beams with tunable beam properties generated using this approach will be suitable for a wide range of applications.

AIM： To identify the bacterial flora in conditions such as Barrett＇s esophagus and reflux esophagitis to determine if they are similar to normal esophageal flora. METHODs： Using broad-range 16s rDNA PCR, esophageal biopsies were examined from 24 patients [9 with normal esophageal mucosa, 12 with gastroesophageal reflux disease （GERD）, and 3 with Barrett＇s esophagus]. Two separate broad-range PCR reactions were performed for each patient, and the resulting products were cloned. In one patient with Barrett＇s esophagus, 99 PCR clones were analyzed. REsULTs： Two separate clones were recovered from each patient （total = 48）, representing 24 different species, with 14 species homologous to known bacteria, 5 homologous to unidentified bacteria, and 5 were not homologous （〈97% identity） to any known bacterial 16s rDNA sequences. seventeen species were found in the reflux esophagitis patients, 5 in the Barrett＇s esophagus patients, and 10 in normal esophagus patients. Further analysis concentrating on a single biopsy from an individual with Barrett＇s esophagus revealed the presence of 21 distinct bacterial species. Members of four phyla were represented, including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Microscopic examination of each biopsy demonstrated bacteria in intimate association with the distal esophageal epithelium, suggesting that the presence of these bacteria is not transitory. CONCLUsION： These findings provide evidence for a complex, residential bacterial population in esophageal reflux-related disorders. While much of this biota is present in the normal esophagus, more detailed comparisons may help identify potential disease associations.

This volume assembles and presents a database on bank regulation in over 150 countries (included also on CD). It offered the first comprehensive cross-country assessment of the impact of bank regulation on the operation of banks, and assesses the validity of the Basel Committee''s influential approach to bank regulation. The treatment also provides an empirical evaluation of the historic debate about the proper role of government in the economy by studying bank regulation and analyzes the role of politics in determining regulatory approaches to banking. The data also indicate that restrictions on the entry of banks, government ownership of banks, and restrictions on bank activities hurt banking system performance. The authors find that domestic political factors shape both regulations and their effectiveness.
