Camelina sativa is a self-pollinating and facultative outcrossing oilseed *** engineering has been used to improve camelina yield potential for altered fatty acid composition,modified protein profiles,improved seed and oil yield,and enhanced drought *** deployment of transgenic camelina in the field posits high risks related to the introgression of transgenes into nontransgenic camelina and wild ***,effective bioconfinement strategies need to be developed to prevent pollen-mediated gene f low(PmGF)from transgenic *** the present study,we overexpressed the cleistogamy(i.e.f loral petal non-openness)-inducing PpJAZ1 gene from peach in transgenic *** camelina overexpressing PpJAZ1 showed three levels of cleistogamy,affected pollen germination rates after anthesis but not during anthesis,and caused a minor silicle abortion only on the main *** also conducted field trials to examine the effects of the overexpressed PpJAZ1 on PmGF in the field,and found that the overexpressed PpJAZ1 dramatically inhibited PmGF from transgenic camelina to non-transgenic camelina under the field ***,the engineered cleistogamy using the overexpressed PpJAZ1 is a highly effective bioconfinement strategy to limit PmGF from transgenic camelina,and could be used for bioconfinement in other dicot species.

Electro-acupuncture to prevent prolonged postoperative ileus:A randomized clinical trial

AIm:To examine whether acupuncture can prevent prolonged postoperative ileus(PPOI)after intraperitoneal surgery for colon cancer. mETHODS:Ninety patients were recruited from the Fudan University Cancer Hospital,Shanghai,China. After surgery,patients were randomized to receive acupuncture(once daily,starting on postoperative day 1, for up to six consecutive days)or usual *** was defined as an inability to pass flatus or have a bowel movement by 96 h after *** main outcomes were time to first flatus,time to first bowel movement, and *** outcomes were quality of life(QOL)measures,including pain, nausea,insomnia,abdominal distension/fullness,and sense of well-being. RESULTS:No significant differences in PPOI on day 4 (P=0.71)or QOL measures were found between the *** were also no group differences when the data were analyzed by examining those whose PPOI had resolved by day 5(P=0.69)or day 6(P= 0.88).No adverse events related to acupuncture were reported. CONCLUSION:Acupuncture did not prevent PPOI andwas not useful for treating PPOI once it had developed in this population.

Strong, lightweight, and highly conductive CNT/Au/Cu wires from sputtering and electroplating methods

In this study, we present a 2-step deposition method via sputtering and electroplating that uses carbon nanotube(CNT) wires synthesized from a wet-spinning technique to produce high-performance CNT/Au/Cu composite wires. After the Au sputtering pre-treatment, the deposition of Cu on the CNT wires was found to be much more homogeneous due to improved wettability and reactivity of the wire surface. At different electrodeposition time, the mechanical strength of the CNT/Au/Cu composite wires could be as high as 0.74 GPa(~2 times stronger than metal wires) while their electrical conductivity could reach 4.65 × 10~5 S/cm(~80% of that for copper). more importantly, the CNT/Au/Cu composite wires with high CNT volume fraction are expected to be lightweight(up to 42% lower than Cu mass density), suggesting that our high-performance composite wires are a promising candidate to substitute conventional heavy metal wires in the future applications.

Increased food intake after starvation enhances sleep in Drosophila melanogaster

Feeding and sleep are highly conserved,interconnected behaviors essential for *** has been shown to potently suppress sleep across species;however,whether satiety promotes sleep is still *** we use the fruit fly,Drosophila melanogaster,as a model organism to address the interaction between feeding and *** first monitored the sleep of flies that had been starved for 24 h and found that sleep amount increased in the first 4 h after flies were given *** sleep after starvation was due to an increase in sleep bout number and average sleep bout *** of translin or adipokinetic hormone,which fail to suppress sleep during starvation,still exhibited a sleep increase after starvation,suggesting that sleep increase after starvation is not a consequence of sleep loss during *** also found that feeding activity and food consumption were higher in the first 10-30 min after *** food consumption in starved flies to 30 min was sufficient to increase sleep for 1 *** flies ingested a comparable amount of food at differing sucrose concentrations,sleep increase after starvation on a lower sucrose concentration was *** together,our results suggest that increased food intake after starvation enhances sleep and reveals a novel relationship between feeding and sleep.

Applying Anomaly-based Weather Analysis to the Prediction of Low Visibility Associated with the Coastal Fog at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in East China

Low visibility episodes (visibility m) were studied by applying the anomaly-based weather analysis method. A regional episode of low visibility associated with a coastal fog that occurred from 27 to 28 January 2016 over Ningbo- Zhoushan Port, Zhejiang Province, East China, was first examined. Some basic features from the anomalous weather analysis for this case were identified:(1) the process of low visibility mainly caused by coastal fog was a direct response to anomalous temperature inversion in the lower troposphere, with a warm center around the 925 hPa level, which was formed by a positive geopotential height (GPH) anomaly in the upper troposphere and a negative GPH anomaly near the surface;(2) the positive humidity anomaly was conducive to the formation of coastal fog and rain;(3) regional coastal fog formed at the moment when the southwesterly wind anomalies transferred to northeasterly wind anomalies. Other cases confirmed that the low visibility associated with coastal fog depends upon low-level inversion, a positive humidity anomaly, and a change of wind anomalies from southwesterly to northeasterly, rain and stratus cloud amount. The correlation coefficients of six-hourly inversion, 850?925-hPa-averaged temperature, GPH and humidity anomalies against visibility are ?0.31, 0.40 and ?0.48, respectively, reaching the 99% confidence level in the first half-years of 2015 and 2016. By applying the anomaly-based weather analysis method to medium-range model output products, such as ensemble prediction systems, the anomalous temperature?pressure pattern and humidity?wind pattern can be used to predict the process of low visibility associated with coastal fog at several days in advance.

Long-term irritable bowel syndrome symptom control with reintroduction of selected FODmAPs

To investigate the long-term effect of dietary education on a low fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide and polyol (FODmAP) diet on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms and quality of life (QoL). mETHODSParticipants with IBS (Rome III) were randomized to two groups. Group I commenced a low FODmAP diet at baseline. At three months, group II, so far a comparator group, crossed over to a low FODmAP diet while group I started re-challenging foods. All patients completed the IBS SSS (IBS symptom severity scoring system, 0-500 points increasing with severity), IBS QoL questionnaire (0-100 increasing with QoL), a FODmAP specific food frequency questionnaire and provided a stool sample at baseline, three and six months for microbiome analysis. RESULTSFifty participants were enrolled into group I (n = 23) or group II (n = 27). Participants in both groups were similar in baseline values but with more men in group I. There was a significantly lower IBS SSS (275.6 ± 63.6 to 128.8 ± 82.5 vs 246.8 ± 71.1 to 203.6 ± 70.1) (P mo. The reduced IBS SSS was sustained at 6 mo in group I (160 ± 102) and replicated in group II (124 ± 76). Fiber intake decreased on the low FODmAP diet (33 ± 17 g/d to 21 ± 8 g/d) (P mAP containing foods increased again to 27 ± 9 g/d. There was no change seen in the intestinal microbiome when participants adopted a low FODmAP diet. CONCLUSIONThis study demonstrated that a reduction in FODmAPs improves symptoms in IBS and this improvement can be maintained while reintroducing FODmAPs.
