Relationship between Age and Neurogenesis in Old World Monkeys

Hippocampal neurogenesis continues throughout the lifespan of adult mammals, but the rates decline dramatically with increasing age. Among the factors that have been shown to affect neurogenesis, aging has been shown to be one of its most potent regulators in mice. The mechanism for the decline in neurogenesis with age is thought to be related to age-dependent changes in local and systemic neuroendocrinology and neurochemistry, as well as internal changes to precursor cells that result in decreased reactivity to normal stimuli. Since most of the data about neurogenesis and age were established from rodent studies, we sought to study this relationship in nonhuman primates in five previously studied cohorts of bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata). In the present study, we statistically analyze the relationship of age and hippocampal neurogenesis rates, as measured by the number of dCX expressing cells in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus in 71 subjects with ages ranging from 3.5 to 17 years. We observed a non-significant relationship between age and doublecortin for subjects less than nine years old (corresponding to young and full adulthood) but a linear significant decline for subjects 9 years or greater (middle age and senescence). In contrast to previous studies that show neurogenesis to decline linearly throughout the lifespan, this study shows that neurogenesis occurs steadily throughout adulthood and begins to decline in middle age in bonnet macaques.

Move a Tropical Cyclone with 4d-Var and Vortex dynamical Initialization in WRF Model

Previous studies showed that 4 d-Var technique used for data assimilation could be modified for weather control. This study demonstrates the ability of 4 d-Var to influence the future path of a tropical cyclone by calculating perturbations in WRF simulation. Given the background error covariance matrix, the initial field is improved by the vortex dynamic initialization technique. Our results show that 4 d-Var can be applied to control the trajectory of simulated tropical cyclones by producing "optimal" perturbations. In the numerical simulation experiment of Typhoon Mitag in 2019, after this kind of weather control similar to data assimilation, the tropical cyclone moved obviously,and the damaging wind over the coastline weakened. The prediction results after the initial field modified by 4 d-Var have a great change, and the position of the tropical cyclone moved about 0.5° southeastward after assimilation,which misses the southeast coast of China. Moreover, the damaging wind is also weakened. Since the 4 d-Var is premised on the assumption that the model is perfect and does not consider the model error, then the research plan to consider model error and introduce new methods is discussed in the paper.

development of a Portable Electronic Sensor for detection of the Kudzu Bug, <i>Megacopta cribraria</i>(Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Plataspidae)

The kudzu bug, Megacopta cribraria (Fabricius), recently became an invasive insect pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. in the southeastern USA capable of reducing crop yield by as much as 60% if left untreated. To reduce these losses and minimize control costs, new methods for detecting kudzu bugs must be investigated in order to optimize control measures. One such method would be to detect volatiles released by kudzu bugs. An electronic portable device was developed to draw volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by kudzu bugs over carbon black-polymer composite sensors and measure the change in resistance for each sensor. Sensors made using polymers poly (bisphenol A carbonate) (p = 0.041), poly (styrene-co-allyl alcohol) (p = 0.017) and poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (p = 0.040) showed significant differences in resistance change for M. cribraria VOCs over the control. A logistic regression was 94.4% accurate based on the resistance changes from sensors made from polymers poly (4-vinylphenol), poly (styrene-co-allyl alcohol), and poly (vinylpyrrolidone) as features. These results indicate the capability of the device to detect kudzu bugs by detecting volatiles released by the insects.

Predictors of Successful Weight Loss Maintenance: A Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Individuals successful at weight loss maintenance (WTLM) utilize similar behaviors but in varying amounts and combinations. Research identifying characteristics which predict WTLM success could be used to develop effective WTLM treatment programs. The purpose of this retrospective analysis was to determine behavioral (e.g., self monitoring of dietary intake) and biological factors (e.g., sex) which may influence WTLM success. Methods: In a previously conducted 12-month WTLM study, weight-reduced middle-aged and older men and women (n = 39) were assigned behavioral goals and asked to daily self-monitor body weight, fruit and vegetable intake, water consumption, and physical activity. This investigation utilized a crisp set qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to characterize individuals’ weight changes and behaviors. Sex difference in clinically significant weight loss (WL) (≥5% WL) at 12 months was investigated, and growth curve models estimated interaction effects between sex and WTLM predictors. Results: QCA findings suggest patterns of weight change during the initial three months of WTLM treatment may dictate 12-month weight outcomes. No sex difference was found in clinically significant WL or in the interaction of sex and behaviors on weight change. Conclusions: WTLM treatments should provide more intensive support during transition from WL to WTLM, particularly during the first three months.

A second class of materials which has had recent interest are carbon templates of silica materials such as MCM-41,SBA-15 or various *** type of material is inherently highly ordered.A carbon replica of the zeolite Faujasite(C-FAU) has shown potential application in the areas of hydrogen storage and in the development of hydrogen fuel cells. Using a mimetic Grand Canonical Monte Carlo templating process,Roussel et *** modeled C-FAU and compared its structural and adsorptive properties with experiment.
