Hurricane Ike,which struck the United States in September 2008,was the ninth most expensive hurricane in terms of *** caused nearly USd 30 billion in damage after making landfall on the Bolivar Peninsula,*** used the delft3dFM/SWAN hydrodynamic and spectral wave model to simulate the storm surge inundation around Galveston Bay during Hurricane *** curves were established through the relationship between eight hydrodynamic parameters(water depth,flow velocity,unit discharge,flow momentum flux,significant wave height,wave energy flux,total water depth(flow depth plus wave height),and total(flow plus wave)force)simulated by the model and National Flood Insurance Program(NFIP)insurance damage *** NFIP insurance database contains a large amount of building damage data,building stories,and elevation,as well as other information from the Ike *** found that the damage curves are sensitive to the model grid resolution,building elevation,and the number of *** also found that the resulting damage functions are steeper than those developed for residential structures in many other locations.

Extreme surges and rainfall represent major driving factors for compound flooding in estuary regions along the Chinese *** combined effect of extreme surges and rainfall(that is,compound floods)might lead to greater impacts than if the drivers occurred in ***,understanding the frequency and severity of compound flooding is important for improving flood hazard assessment and compound flood resilience in coastal *** this study,we examined the dependence between extreme surges and corresponding rainfall events in 26 catchments along the Chinese coastline during typhoon and non-typhoon seasons using copula functions,to identify where the two drivers more often occur together and the implication for flood management in these *** found that the interaction between flood drivers is statistically significant in 10catchments located around Hainan Island(south)and Shanghai,where surge peaks occur mainly during the typhoon season and around the Bohai Sea(north),where surge peaks occur mainly during the non-typhoon *** further applied the copula-based framework to model the dependence between surge peaks and associated rainfall and estimate their joint and conditional probability in two specific locations—Hainan Island and the Bohai Sea,where the correlation between flood drivers is statistically *** observed that in Hainan Island where most of the surge peaks occur during the typhoon season,extreme rainfall events during the typhoon season are generally more intense compared to annual maxima *** contrast,around the Bohai Sea where surge peaks occur mainly outside the typhoon season,rainfall is less intense than annual maxima *** results show that the interaction between extreme surges and rainfall can provide valuable insight when designing coastal and urban infrastructure,especially in highly populated urban areas prone to both coastal and pluvial flooding,such as many Chinese coastal cities.

We propose a new signaling scheme for on-chip optical-electrical-optical artificial neural networks that utilizes orthogonal delay-division multiplexing and pilot-tone-based self-homodyne *** scheme offers a more efficient scaling of the optical power budget with increasing network *** simulations,based on220 nm silicon-on-insulator silicon photonics technology,suggest that the network can support 31×31 neurons,with 961 links and freely programmable weights,using a single 500 m W optical comb and a signal-to-noise ratio of 21.3 d B per ***,it features a low sensitivity to temperature fluctuations,ensuring that it can be operated outside of a laboratory *** demonstrate the network’s effectiveness in nonlinear equalization tasks by training it to equalize a time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter(AdC)architecture,achieving an effective number of bits over 4 over the entire 75 GHz AdC *** anticipate that this network architecture will enable broadband and low latency nonlinear signal processing in practical settings such as ultra-broadband data converters and real-time control systems.

In this study the changes of tropical cyclone(TC)size from 2001 to 2021 are analyzed based on linear and quadratic curve fittings of the National Hurricane Center(NHC)/Joint Typhoon Warning Center(JTWC)best track data,based on the radius of maximum wind(RMW)and the average radius of 34-kt wind(AR34),in three oceanic basins of the North Atlantic(NATL),the Western North Pacific(WPAC)and the Eastern North Pacific(EPAC).The computations are done separately for two categories of tropical cyclones:tropical storms(TS)and hurricanes(HT).Size changes of landfalling and non-landfalling TCs are also *** show that there is a great inter-basin variability among the changes in TC *** conclusions include:1)overall,the inner cores of TSs have become larger in all three basins,with the increasing tendencies being significant in the NATL and WAPC,while those of HTs mostly get smaller or remain similar;2)meanwhile,comparatively large inter-basin differences are observed for the TC outer core sizes,and the sizes of landfalling TCs;3)particularly,a significant decrease in landfalling HT outer core size is observed over the EPAC;4)in contrast,significant increases in landfalling TS inner core size are found over the NATL and *** presented analysis results could benefit future research about TC forecasts,storm surge studies,and the cyclone climate and its changes.

With climate change and rising sea levels,the coastal zone’s flood risk is *** researches have shown a gradually degrading capacity of traditional hard engineering structures(e.g.,seawall,dikes)on flood mitigation due to problems such as land subsidence and insufficient *** remedy the defects,the"building with nature concept"for coastal protection with saltmarshes was examined by combining field measurements and numerical *** advantages of saltmarsh over traditional seawall on flood protection was demonstrated from the perspective of both flood area mitigation and economic gain,based on scenario *** show that tidal wetlands are essential in mitigating significant wave heights(Hs)and current velocities even during storm *** storm wave and current velocity reduction ratio(RRw and RRc)by saltmarshes on Chongming dongtan Shoal(CMdS)during Typhoon 9711 is approximately 11%and 51%,*** wave and current mitigation by Scirpus mariqueter are more efficient than Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis during measurements in 2010,which were approximately 0.3 m and 0.2 m/s,0.125 m and 0.155 m/s,0.086 m and 0.128 m/s per kilometer width,*** summer saltmarsh area 54.2 km2 on CMdS protects approximately 32 km^(2)land area behind the seawall from being flooded,equivalent to the seawall heightening of approximately 0.42 m on equivalent flood *** performance of cost-and-benefit analysis shows a relatively higher(by 3%–7%)net present value(NPV)and a higher(by 1.5 times)benefit-cost ratio(BC)of nature-based solution(i.e.,saltmarsh restoration)compared with traditional hard engineering solution(i.e.,seawall construction).Thus,building seawall with nature,such as a hybrid flood protection measure,should be implemented in the future coastal redesign and maintenance.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)presents a chronic condition that links the overarching influence of the intestinal microbiome to a disease state with the multisystem manifestations of obesity,type 2 diabetes(T2d),chronic kidney disease(CKd)and cardiovascular disease(CVd)(1).NAFLd is an increasingly common disease with a current prevalence of 25%worldwide(2).The proportion of severe presentations of NAFLd is also increasing and these trends will lead to an increased burden from NAFLd sequelae,including cirrhosis,liver failure and hepatocellular cancer(2).
