Geometrical and Geotechnical Characteristics of Landslides in Korea under Various Geological Conditions

The goal of this study is to determine the geometrical and geotechnical characteristics of landslides under various geological conditions using detailed field surveys, laboratory soil tests and precipitation records. Three study areas are selected to consider different rocks, including gneiss in Jangheung, granite in Sangju and sedimentary rocks in Pohang, South Korea. Many landslides have occurred in these three areas during the rainy *** records indicate that landslides occurring in the gneiss area of Jangheung and granite area of Sangju may be influenced by the hourly rainfall intensity rather than cumulative ***, landslides occurring in the sedimentary rock area of Pohang may be influenced by hourly rainfall intensity and cumulative rainfall. To investigate the factors that influence these types of landslides, a detailed landslide survey was performed and a series of laboratory soil tests were *** to the detailed field survey, most landslides occurred on the flanks of mountain slopes, and the slope inclination where they occurred mostly ranged from 26 to 30 degrees, regardless of the geological conditions. The landslide in the gneiss area of Jangheung is larger than the landslides in the granite area of Sangju and sedimentary rock area of ***, the landslide in the sedimentary rock area is shorter and shallower than the landslides in the gneiss and granite areas. Thus, the shape and size of the landslide are clearly related to the geological conditions. According to the integrated soil property and landslide occurrence analyses results, the average dry unit weight of the soils from the landslide sites is smaller than that of the soils obtained from the nonlandslide site. The average coefficient of permeability of soils obtained from the landslide sites is greater than that of soils obtained from the non-landslide sites with the same geology. Supersonic Cavity Based Combustion with Kerosene/Hydrogen Fuel

A comparative study with kerosene and hydrogen fuel in a model scramjet combustor has been carried out nu- merically. The effect of fuel-air equivalence ratio on the flow field properties in a cavity based mixing mechanism at a freestream Math number of 2.08 has been probed. The investigation has been carried out in a two dimension- al numerical model where a cavity of length to depth ratio of 2 is mounted on one of the walls of the flow channel The flow field shock structure is observed to change with the change in fuel-air equivalence ratio. Total pressure loss is observed to depend both on fuel air equivalence ratio and the fuel type. The spread of fuel in the test sec- tion shows marked variation with the equivalence ratio. Performance of injector location on the fuel-air mixing is also probed during the course of the investigation.

An Experimental Study of Condensation Heat Transfer in Sub-Millimeter Rectangular Tubes

The characteristics of local heat transfer and pressure drops were experimentally investigated using condensing R134a two-phase flow, in single rectangular tubes, with hydraulic diameter of 0.494, 0.658, and 0.972 mm. New experimental techniques were used to measure the in-tube condensation heat transfer coefficient especially for the low heat and mass flows. Tests were performed for a mass flux of 100, 200, 400, and 600 kg/m2s, a heat flux of 5 to 20 kW/m2, and a saturation temperature of 40℃. In this study, effect of heat flux, mass flux, vapor qualities, and hydraulic diameter on flow condensation were investigated and the experimental local condensation heat transfer coefficients and frictional pressure drop are shown. The experimental data of condensation Nusselt number are compared with previous correlations, most of which are proposed for the condensation of pure refrigerant in a relatively large inner diameter round tubes.

Analysis and Experiment on the Steering Control of a Water-running Robot Using Hydrodynamic Forces

Steering is important for the high maneuverability of mobile robots. Many studies have been performed to improve the maneuverability using a tail. The aim of this research was to verify the performance of a water-running robot steering on water using a tail. Kinematic analysis was performed for the leg mechanism and the interaction forces between the water and the feet to calculate the propulsive drag force of the water. This paper suggests a simplified planar two-link rigid body model to determine the dynamic performance of the robotic platform with respect to the effect of the tail＇s motion. Simulations based on a dynamic model were performed by applying a range of motions to the tail. In addition, a simulation with a Bang-bang controller was also performed to control the main frame＇s yawing locomotion. Finally, an experiment was conducted with the controller, and the simulation and experimental results were compared. These results can be used as a guideline to develop a steerable water-running robot.

Effects of foundation damage and water-level change on vibration modal parameters of gravity-type caisson structure

In this paper,the effects of foundation damage and water-level change on vibration characteristics of gravity-type caisson structure are examined by analyzing modal parameters extracted from output-only *** achieve the objective,the following approaches are ***,vibration response analysis methods are selected to estimate power spectral density and modal parameters such as natural frequency,damping ratio and mode shape of a lab-scale caisson structural ***,vibration tests on the lab-scale caisson system are performed under a series of test scenarios which include three water-level changes and three damage ***,experimental modal parameters corresponding to the damaging cases as well as the water level cases are extracted by frequency domain decomposition method and stochastic subspace identification ***,the effects of the water-level variation and foundation damage on the extracted modal parameters are examined to assess the feasibility of the vibration-based damage detection in gravity-type caisson structures under water-level uncertainty.

Hydrogen storage in Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier(LOHC)systems is appealing for the safe storage and distribution of excess renewable energy via existing gasoline infrastructures to *** present the eutectic mixture of biphenyl and diphenyl ether of its first use as a LOHC *** material is hydrogenated with 99%selectivity without the cleavage of C–O bond,with commercial heterogeneous catalysts,which is confirmed by nuclear magnetic spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass *** concentration,dehydrogenation enthalpy,and thermo-neutral temperature are calculated using a density functional *** results indicate that O-atom-containing material exhibits more favorable dehydrogenation thermodynamics than that of the hydrocarbon *** H2-rich material contains6.8 wt%of gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity.A preliminary study of catalytic dehydrogenation on a continuous reactor is presented to demonstrate a reversibility of this material.

Pancreatic adenocarcinosarcoma of monoclonal origin:A case report

Adenocarcinosarcoma, a neoplasm containing both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components, is a rare form of a cancer and the pathophysiology is currently poorly understood. Moreover, definitive treatment guidelines for this disease have not yet been established. Pancreatic adenocarcinosarcoma is even more rare and the prognosis is fatal. Here, we report a case of a 77-year-old male with pancreatic adenocarcinosarcoma and metastasis to the liver. The patient presented at our hospital with uncontrolled glucose levels and diabetes mellitus. The patient’s laboratory findings were unremarkable with the exception of elevated carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels. Biopsies of the tumors in the pancreas and the liver revealed two types of tumors: pancreatic adenocarcinoma and a poorly differentiated sarcoma. To determine if KRAS mutations were present, we performed a peptide nucleic acid (PNA) clamp PCR-based assay. DNA sequencing by PNA clamp PCR identified a point mutation in codon 12 of exon 2 within KRAS from both tumor types. Because the KRAS mutation is observed in both tumor components, our findings support a monoclonal tumor origin followed by subsequent divergent differentiation into the sarcomatous and carcinomatous tumor populations. After we considered the patient’s status and the late stage of tumor detection, gemcitabine chemotherapy was administered.

BACKGROUND Combined tumors comprising large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma have been rarely reported in the *** SUMMARY We report a case of a 73-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis B suspected to have a malignant hepatic mass(segment 3;size,4.5 cm)and lymph node metastasis based on computed tomography and magnetic resonance *** being Child-Pugh class A,esophageal varices were *** underwent left lateral sectionectomy and lymph node *** examination revealed a collision tumor consisting of large-cell neuroendocrine(90%)and hepatocellular(10%)*** combined carcinoma had metastasized to one of the three lymph nodes *** patient recovered without any postoperative complications and was discharged in good condition on postoperative day *** chemotherapy was not *** recurrence occurred during a follow-up period of 24 *** To improve the therapeutic management of combined tumors in the liver,it is necessary to discuss each clinical experience and consider an appropriate method for the preoperative diagnosis and treatment.
