BACKGROUND Few studies have been conducted on sex differences in the incidence, pathophysiology, and prognosis of gastric cancer(GC).AIM To analyze the differences in GC characteristics according to sex in patients who underwent surgical treatment for *** A total of 2983 patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma who received surgical treatment at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between 2003 and 2017 were *** clinicopathological characteristics, histologic type of GC, overall and GC-specific survival rates, and associated risk factors were *** Among the 2983 patients, 2005(67.2%) and 978(32.8%) were males and females, *** average age of the female group(59.36 years) was significantly younger than that of the male group(61.66 years;P < 0.001).Cancer of the gastric body(P < 0.001) and diffuse-type histology(P < 0.001) were more common in females than in *** trend was more prominent in females younger than 60 years of age, with a significantly higher proportion of diffuse-type cancer than in the male *** of sex, diffuse-type GC was more common in younger patients, and the proportion of intestinal-type GC increased with *** overall survival rate was significantly higher in females(P < 0.001).However, this difference disappeared for GC-specific survival(P = 0.168), except for the poor GC-specific survival rate in advanced-stage cancer(stage Ⅲ or above) in females(P = 0.045).The risk factors for GC-related mortality were older age, upper location of GC, and diffuse-or mixed-type *** terms of comorbidities, more males died from diseases other than GC, including other malignancies such as lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and pancreatic cancer, and respiratory diseases such as interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while there were relatively more cardiovascular or cerebrovascular deaths in *** Sex-based differences in GC were

Calbindin D-28K （CB）, a Ca2＋-binding protein, maintains Ca2＋ homeostasis and protects neurons against various insults. Hyperthermia can exacerbate brain damage produced by ischemic insults. However, little is reported about the role of CB in the brain under hyperthermic condition during ischemic insults. We inves- tigated the effects of transient global cerebral ischemia on CB immunoreactivity as well as neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation under hyperthermic condition using immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclei （NeuN） and CB, and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining in gerbils. Hyperthermia （39.5 ＋ 0.2~C） was induced for 30 minutes before and during transient ischemia. Hyperthermic ischemia resulted in neu- ronal damage/death in the pyramidal layer of CA1-3 area and in the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In addition, hyperthermic ischemia significantly decreaced CB immunoreac- tivity in damaged or dying neurons at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In brief, hyperthermic condition produced more extensive and severer neuronal damage/death, and reduced CB immunoreactivity in the hippocampus following transient global cerebral ischemia. Present findings indicate that the degree of reduced CB immu- noreactivity might be related with various neuronal damage/death overtime and corresponding areas after ischemic insults.

Neuroprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning on hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons through maintaining calbindin D28k immunoreactivity following subsequent transient cerebral ischemia

Ischemic preconditioning elicited by a non-fatal brief occlusion of blood flow has been applied for an experimental therapeutic strategy against a subsequent fatal ischemic insult. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning（2-minute transient cerebral ischemia） on calbindin D28k immunoreactivity in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 area following a subsequent fatal transient ischemic insult（5-minute transient cerebral ischemia）. A large number of pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area died 4 days after 5-minute transient cerebral ischemia. Ischemic preconditioning reduced the death of pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area. Calbindin D28k immunoreactivity was greatly attenuated at 2 days after 5-minute transient cerebral ischemia and it was hardly detected at 5 days post-ischemia. Ischemic preconditioning maintained calbindin D28 k immunoreactivity after transient cerebral ischemia. These findings suggest that ischemic preconditioning can attenuate transient cerebral ischemia-caused damage to the pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 area through maintaining calbindin D28k immunoreactivity.

Background： Water dropwort （Oenanthejavanica） as a popular traditional medicine in Asia shows various biological properties including antioxidant activity. In this study, we firstly examined the neuroprotective effect of Oenanthejavanica extract （OJE） in the hippocampal comus ammonis 1 region （CA 1 region） of the gerbil subjected to transient cerebral ischemia. Methods： Gerbils were established by the occlusion of common carotid arteries for 5 min. The neuroprotective effect of OJE was estimated by cresyl violet staining. In addition, 4 antioxidants （copper, zinc superoxide dismutase [SOD], manganese SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase） immunoreactivities were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Results： Pyramidal neurons in the CA1 region showed neuronal death at 5 days postischemia; at this point in time, all antioxidants immunoreactivities disappeared in CA1 pyramidal neurons and showed 100 mg/kg, OJE protected CA 1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic damage in many nonpyramidal cells. Treatment with 200 mg/kg, not In addition, 200 mg/kg OJE treatment increased or maintained antioxidants immunoreactivities. Especially, among the antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase immunoreactivity was effectively increased in the CA 1 pyramidal neurons of the OJE-treated sham-operated and ischemia-operated groups. Conclusion： Our present results indicate that treatment with OJE can protect neurons from transient ischemic damage and that the neuroprotective effect may be closely associated with increased or maintained intracellular antioxidant enzymes by OJE.

探讨了一系列有关菇床的制备、栽培料的处理和发酵等提高平菇产量的栽培措施。为了提高锯木屑的利用率,在制备菇床时引进了发酵技术;为了解决生长中一些基础问题,改进了培养基质的处理方法。同时也评估了聚乙烯薄膜钻孔覆盖技术对两种平菇(Pleurotus ostreatus和***-caju)产量和品质的影响。在平菇菇床制备的过程中,为避免其它真菌菌丝的污染,使用了发酵后的锯木屑法。结果表明,所用的3种添加物中,稻糠是促使培养基质升温效率最高的添加物,可以升高到70℃。应用发酵锯木屑添加稻糠生产的菌丝的活力和密度大大高于非发酵锯木屑培养,并且其上可见平菇原基的形成。发酵锯木屑在预防木霉的污染上显示了一定的潜能,而非发酵锯屑在接种后30 d内对木霉无能为力。研究了堆料(发酵)对平菇培养基物效率的提高能力。在白杨树锯木屑和冬蘑菇的栽培废料中加入10 %的米糠后,在20～28℃下室外堆放12 d。在发酵锯木屑钵中发酵的持续时间缩短3 d。平菇在发酵基质中生长可以加快子实体原基的形成。用棉籽壳和发酵的白杨锯木屑混合可以获得最高的产量(742 g),而对照只有663 g。另外,用白杨锯木屑与冬蘑菇培养废料混合可以最有效提高发酵效率。在棉籽壳中添加发酵的锯木屑和可循环的农副产品可以促进培养基质发酵和子实?

In multicellular organisms, controlling the timing and extent of asymmetric cell divisions （ACDs） is crucial for correct patterning. During post-embryonic root development in Arabidopsis thaliana, ground tissue （GT） maturation involves an additional ACD of the endodermis, which generates two different tissues： the endo- dermis （inner） and the middle cortex （outer）. It has been reported that the abscisic acid （ABA） and gibberellin （GA） pathways are involved in middle cortex （MC） formation. However, the molecular mechanisms under- lying the interaction between ABA and GA during GT maturation remain largely unknown. Through transcriptome analyses, we identified a previously uncharacterized C2H2-type zinc finger gene, whose expression is regulated by GA and ABA, thus named GAZ （GA- AND ABA-RESPONSIVE ZINC FINGER）. Seedlings ectopically overexpressing GAZ （GAZ-OX） were sensitive to ABA and GA during MC formation, whereas GAZ-SRDX and RNAi seedlings displayed opposite phenotypes. In addition, our results indicated that GAZ was involved in the transcriptional regulation of ABA and GA homeostasis. In agreement with pre- vious studies that ABA and GA coordinate to control the timing of MC formation, we also confirmed the unique interplay between ABA and GA and identified factors and regulatory networks bridging the two hor- mone pathways during GT maturation of the Arabidopsis root.

We present photonics technology based on a bulk-Si substrate for cost-sensitive dynamic random-access memory(DRAM)optical interface *** summarize the progress on passive and active photonic devices using a local-crystallized Si waveguide fabricated by solid phase epitaxy or laser-induced epitaxial growth on bulk-Si *** process of integration of a photonic integrated circuit(IC)with an electronic IC is demonstrated using a 65 nm DRAM periphery process on 300 mm wafers to prove the possibility of seamless integration with various complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor *** the bulk-Si photonic devices,we show the feasibility of high-speed multidrop interface:the Mach–Zehnder interferometer modulators and commercial photodetectors are used to demonstrate four-drop link operation at 10 Gb∕s,and the transceiver chips with photonic die and electronic die work for the DDR3 DRAM interface at 1.6 Gb∕s under a 1∶4 multidrop configuration.

Regulations for structural design play a significant role in structural engineering, providing requirements for design and construction of structures in terms of safety, serviceability, and durability[1]. To use the design codes correctly, engineers need to have a lot of experience and spend much time and efforts to design their structures and check the results with the regulations. Although many structural design programs have been developed and used in structural design, these programs are only valid to the specific code from which their algorithms were derived, and the revisions are difficult to be implemented into the programs without supports of developers.
