To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of lithium on cells, in this study, we exposed SH-SY5Y cells to 0.5 mmol/L lithium carbonate （Li2CO2） for 25-50 weeks and then detected the expression levels of some neurobiology related genes and post-translational modifications of stress proteins in SH-SYSY cells, cDNA arrays showed that pyruvate kinase 2 （PKM2） and calmodulin 3 （CaM 3） expression levels were significantly down-regulated, phosphatase protein PP2A expression was lightly down-regulated, and casein kinase II （CK2）, threonine/tyrosine phosphatase 7 （PYST2）, and dopamine beta-hydroxylase （DBH） expression levels were significantly up-regulated. Besides, western blot analysis of stress proteins （HSP27, HSP70, GRP78 and GRP94） showed an over-expression of two proteins： a 105 kDa protein which is a hyper-phosphorylated isoform of GRP94, and a 108 kDa protein which is a phosphorylated tetramer of HSP27. These results suggest that the neuroprotective effects of lithium are likely related to gene expressions and post-translational modifications of proteins cited above.

Ultrafast supercontinuum generation in gas-filled waveguides is an enabling technology for many intriguing applications ranging from attosecond metrology towards biophotonics,with the amount of spectral broadening crucially depending on the pulse dispersion of the propagating *** this study,we show that structural resonances in a gas-filled antiresonant hollow core optical fiber provide an additional degree of freedom in dispersion engineering,which enables the generation of more than three octaves of broadband light that ranges from deep UV wavelengths to near *** observation relies on the introduction of a geometric-induced resonance in the spectral vicinity of the ultrafast pump laser,outperforming gas dispersion and yielding a unique dispersion profile independent of core size,which is highly relevant for scaling input *** a krypton-filled fiber,we observe spectral broadening from 200 nm to 1.7μm at an output energy of B 23μJ within a single optical mode across the entire spectral *** show that the frequency generation results from an accelerated fission process of solitonlike waveforms in a non-adiabatic dispersion regime associated with the emission of multiple phase-matched Cherenkov radiations on both sides of the *** effect,along with the dispersion tuning and scaling capabilities of the fiber geometry,enables coherent ultra-broadband and high-energy sources,which range from the UV to the mid‐infrared spectral range.

AIM: To investigate the influence of different quasispecies of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1b core protein on growth of Chang liver cells. METHODS: Three eukaryotic expression plasmids (pEGFP-N1/core) that contained different quasispecies truncated core proteins of HCV genotype 1b were constructed. These were derived from tumor (T) and non- tumor (NT) tissues of a patient infected with HCV and C191 (HCV-J6). The core protein expression plasmids were transiently transfected into Chang liver cells. At different times, the cell cycle and apoptosis was assayed by flow cytometry, and cell proliferation was assayed by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. RESULTS: The proportion of S-phase Chang liver cells transfected with pEGFP-N1/core was significantly lower than that of cells transfected with blank plasmid at three different times after transfection (all P NT > C191), and apoptosis was increased in cells transfected with pEGFP-N1/core as the transfection time increased (72 h > 48 h > 24 h). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that HCV genotype 1b core protein induces apoptosis, and inhibits cell- cycle progression and proliferation of Chang liver cells. Different quasispecies core proteins of HCV genotype 1b might have some differences in the pathogenesis of HCV persistent infection and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background: Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) surgical emergencies represent a significant amount within surgical pathologies, in Africa and throughout the world. Our study was aimed to assess the etiological, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of GIT surgical emergencies in patients from two hospitals in Douala, Cameroon. Patients and Method: A longitudinal prospective study was conducted from December 2018 to May 2019, including 203 patients of all ages and both sexes who presented with a GIT surgical emergency in any clinical form, and who underwent surgery within one of our hospitals. We collected patients’ parameters through a survey, from complete history to clinical examination, then followed them up from surgery to post-operative time. Gathered information was analyzed by IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 23.0 software version. Results: GIT surgical emergencies accounted for 27.5% of all surgical emergencies. Our target population included 55.2% (n = 112) of men, and 44.8% (n = 91) of women, observing a sex-ratio of 1.23. The mean age of the patients was 36.3 ± 17.1 years, with extreme values of 6 months and 86 years. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom, vomiting and lack of bowel movement or gas pass, were the main associated symptoms in 27.6% and 16.7% of cases, respectively. Etiologically, leading pathologies were intestinal obstruction (32.0%, 64 cases), acute appendicitis (24.6%, 50 cases), then came peritononitis and abdominal trauma with respectively 22.7% (46 cases) and 21.7% (43 cases). Most patients underwent surgery within 24 hour. Laparotomy was the primary method used in 90.6%, and laparoscopy (9.4%). Post-operative suture breakage and parietal suppuration were the most common complications post-operatively. AIM: To investigate the combined antegraderetrograde endoscopic rendezvous technique for complete oesophageal obstruction and the swallowing ***: This single-centre case series includes consecutive patients who were unable to swallow due to complete oesophageal obstruction and underwent combined antegrade-retrograde endoscopic dilation(CARD) within the last 10 years. The patients' demographic characteristics, clinical parameters, endoscopic therapy, adverse events, and outcomes were obtained retrospectively. Technical success was defined as effective restoration of oesophageal patency. Swallowing success was defined as either percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG)-tube independency and/or relevant improvement of oral food intake, as assessed by the functional oral intake scale(FOIS)(≥ level 3).RESULTS: The cohort consisted of six patients [five males; mean age 71 years(range, 54-74)]. All but one patient had undergone radiotherapy for head and neck or oesophageal cancer. Technical success was achieved in five out of six patients. After discharge, repeated dilations were performed in all five patients. During follow-up(median 27 mo, range, 2-115), three patients remained PEG-tube dependent. Three of four patients achieved relevant improvement of swallowing(two patients: FOIS 6, one patient: FOIS 7). One patient developed mediastinal emphysema following CARD, without a need for ***: The CARD technique is safe and a viable alternative to high-risk blind antegrade dilation in patients with complete proximal oesophageal obstruction. Although only half of the patients remained PEG-tube independent, the majority improved their ability to swallow.

Leveraging the high resolution,sensitivity,and wide frequency coverage of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array(ALMA),the QUARKS survey,standing for“Querying Underlying mechanisms of massive star formation with ALMA-Resolved gas Kinematics and Structures”,is observing 139 massive starforming clumps at ALMA Band 6(λ~1.3 mm).This paper introduces the Atacama Compact Array(ACA)7 m data of the QUARKS survey,describing the ACA observations and data *** multiwavelength data,we provide the first edition of QUARKS atlas,offering insights into the multiscale and multiphase interstellar medium in high-mass star *** ACA 1.3 mm catalog includes 207 continuum sources that are called ACA *** gas kinetic temperatures are estimated using three formaldehyde transitions with a non-LTE radiation transfer model,and the mass and density are derived from a dust emission *** ACA sources are massive(16–84 percentile values of 6–160 M_(⊙)),gravity-dominated(M∝R^(1.1))fragments within massive clumps,with supersonic turbulence(M>1)and embedded star-forming *** find a linear correlation between the masses of the fragments and the massive clumps,with a ratio of 6%between the *** considering fragments as representative of dense gas,the ratio indicates a dense gas fraction(DGF)of 6%,although with a wide scatter ranging from 1%to 10%.If we consider the QUARKS massive clumps to be what is observed at various scales,then the size-independent DGF indicates a self-similar fragmentation or collapsing mode in protocluster *** the ACA data over four orders of magnitude of luminosity-to-mass ratio(L/M),we find that the DGF increases significantly with L/M,which indicates clump evolutionary *** observed a limited fragmentation at the subclump scale,which can be explained by a dynamic global collapse process.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary cancer of the liver. Prognosis and treatment options are stage dependent. In general, prognosis of patients with unresectable HCC is poor, especially for those patients with impaired liver function. Whereas treatment with the novel molecular tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib (Nexavar) was shown to result in prolonged survival in patients with preserved liver function, its' possible application in HCC-patients with strongly impaired liver function has not been clearly assessed. Here, we report on a 47-year-old male patient who presented with Child-Pugh class C liver cirrhosis and multifocal, non-resectable HCC. The patient was treated for 27 mo with Sorafenib, which was not associated with major drug-related side effects. During treatment, a reduction in tumour size of 24% was achieved, as assessed by regular CT scan. Moreover,within the 27 mo interval of stable tumour disease, liver function improved from Child-Pugh class C to class A.

Detection and Characterization of the Cyanobacteria and Cyanophages of Barnegat Bay, New Jersey

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHAB), caused by eutrophication, are known to threaten both wildlife and human health. Due to urbanization and land use changes, an increase of CHAB’s at a more frequent rate within Barnegat Bay has been observed. In order to detect possible CHAB causing cyanobacteria, water samples were collected from 12 different locations within Barnegat Bay. Each sample was filtered through a 30- and 0.4-μm polycarbonate filter sequentially. Flow cytometry was carried out for the filtrate collected between 0.4- and 30-μm. Chelex DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gel electrophoresis were then performed for all sites using four primer sets (27F/785R, PSF/UR, CYA359F/CYA781R and MSF/MSR) designed to detect cyanobacteria. Flow cytometric results indicated the water samples contained a wide range of cyanobacteria, including M. aeruginosa, Cylindrospermum spp., Anabaena spp., and Synechococcus sp. IU 625 ranges from 3.16 to 8.17 × 107 cells·L-1. PCR-based assays suggest that general cyanobacteria as well as phytospecific species were present for all sites, but no toxin-producing Microcystis aeruginosa was detected. Plaque assays demonstrated the presence of cyanophages for S. IU 625, Anabaena spp., and M. aeruginosa at all sites, up to 105 PFU·ml-1.
