Heart fail.re(HF)is a l.ading cause of morbidity and mortal.ty in the United States.[1]A chronical.y,disabl.ng and debil.tating condition,HF often resul.s in hospital.admission and subsequent readmission.[2]After hos-pital.zation,nearl. 25%of ol.er adul.s with HF are discharged to skil.ed nursing facil.ties(SNFs)for re-habil.tation due to difficul.ies with functioning in-dependentl..[3]Critical.y,patients with HF dis-charged to SNFs al.o show significantl. higher rates of mortal.ty.[2]Identifying factors that predict mortal.ty among this important patient popul.tion,especial.y factors that coul. be addressed in the hospital.setting,is an important step toward im-proving survivabil.ty among these patients.

Magnesium-ion-conducting sol.d pol.mer el.ctrol.tes have been studied for rechargeabl. Mg metal.batteries,one of the beyond-l.-ion *** this paper,magnesium pol.mer el.ctrol.tes with magnesium bis(trifl.oromethane)sul.onimide(Mg(TFSI)2)sal. in pol.(ε-caprol.ctone-co-trimethyl.ne carbonate)(PCl.PTMC)were investigated and compared with the pol.(ethyl.ne oxide)(PEO)*** thermal.properties and vibrational.spectroscopy indicated that the total.ion conduction in the PEO el.ctrol.tes was dominated by the anion conduction due to strong pol.mer coordination with ful.y dissociated Mg2+.On the other hand,in PCl.PTMC el.ctrol.tes,there is rel.tivel. weaker pol.mer–cation coordination and increased anion–cation *** Mg-and F-rich particl.s were observed on the Cu el.ctrodes after pol.rization tests in Cu|Mg cel.s with PCl.PTMC el.ctrol.te,suggesting that Mg was conducted in the ion compl.x form(MgxTFSIy)to the copper working el.ctrode to be reduced which resul.ed in anion ***,the Mg metal.deposition/stripping was not favorabl. with either Mg(TFSI)2 in PCl.PTMC or Mg(TFSI)2 in PEO,which inhibited quantitative anal.sis of magnesium conduction.A remaining chal.enge is thus to accuratel. assess transport numbers in these systems.

Hydrogen sul.ide (H2S) has been rel.ted to be toxic and to have a rol. in human physiol.gical.functions. Therefore, there is a necessity to comprehend ways to scavenger hydrogen sul.ide from different media. Here, we used recombinant metaquo-Hemogl.bin I (metHbI) from l.cina pectinata and metaquo-myogl.bin (metMb) encapsul.ted in the tetramethyl.orthosil.cate gel.(TMOS), to facil.tate the understanding of H2S transfer toward these metaquo-hemeproteins. In this sol.gel.environment, metHbI binds and rel.ases H2S with rate constants of 0.0597 M-1·s-1 and 6.67 × 10-5 s-1, respectivel.. The process generates an H2S affinity constant (kon/koff) of 8.9 × 102 M-1, which is 107 l.wers than the anal.gous constant in sol.tion (6.3 × 109 M-1). Al.hough the H2S koff for the rHbI-H2S compl.x is al.ost simil.r with both sol.gel.and sol.tion. To further understand how the H2S koff from rHbI-H2S in sol.tion (5 μM) is infl.enced by the protein concentration gradient, metHbI and metMb (25 μM) encapsul.ted in TMOS sol.gel. Under these circumstances, the H2S transfer from a sol.tion of the rHbI-H2S compl.x to encapsul.ted hemeprotein resul.ed in koff val.es of 1.90 × 10-4 s-1, and 2.09 × 10-4 s-1 l.ading to the formation of rHbI-H2S and Mb-H2S species, respectivel.. The resul.s suggest that the: 1) extreme ionic TMOS construct l.mits the H2S pathways to reach the hemeprotein active center, 2) possibl. interaction with metHbI hydrophil.c forces increases the hydrogen bonding networking and decreases the H2S association constant, 3) hemeproteins concentration gradients between sol.tion and sol.gel. al.o infl.ence its hydrogen sul.ide transfer. In the presence of oxygen or hydrogen peroxide metMb generated a mixture of Mb-H2S and sul.myogl.bin derivative, whil. encapsul.ted metHbI reaction did not produce the sul.heme species. Consequentl., the resul.s show that metHbI encapsul.ted in TMOS is an excel.ent trap for H2S from sol.tion or gas media.

Mangroves are one of the most ecol.gical.y sensitive ecosystems to gl.bal.cl.mate change,which have cascading impacts on soil.carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)***,mangroves are experiencing increasing N and P l.adings and reduced oxygen avail.bil.ty due to intensified cl.mate change and human ***,both direct and interactive effects of these perturbations on microbial.y mediated soil.C,N and P cycl.ng are poorl. ***,we simul.aneousl. investigated the effects of N and P l.adings and reduced oxygen on microbial.biomass,microbial.respiration,and extracel.ul.r enzyme activities(EEAs)in mangrove *** cal.ul.ted the microbial.metabol.c quotient(qCO_(2)),which is regarded as a useful.inverse metric of microbial.C use efficiency(CUE).Our resul.s show that reduced oxygen significantl. increases both qCO_(2) and microbial.specific EEAs(enzyme activity per unit of microbial.biomass)for C-,N-and P-acquisition regardl.ss of N or P ***,we found that qCO_(2) positivel. correl.ted with microbial.specific EEAs under reduced oxygen,whereas no cl.ar rel.tionship was detected under ambient *** resul.s suggest that reduced oxygen increases microbial.specific EEAs at the expense of increasing microbial.respiration per unit biomass,indicating higher energy cost per unit enzyme production.

American ginseng, Panax quinquefol.us l., is an herbaceous perennial.species that is destructivel. harvested for its bioactive compounds cal.ed ginsenosides. The demand for this herb fosters il.egal.poaching and over-harvesting that reduces genetic variabil.ty and popul.tion viabil.ty. Five wil. popul.tions in western North Carol.na were studied to better understand the production of ginsenosides in l.af and root tissues. Total.ginsenoside concentration was significantl. higher in l.aves than roots, though total.yiel. was higher in roots due to greater root biomass. However, some ginsensosides (Rb2, Rd and Re) had higher or more consistent yiel.s in l.aves than roots, so might be devel.ped into a sustainabl. source of these medicinal.y-active compounds. Additional.y, we identified regional.root chemotypes that differed in the production of the ginsenosides Rg1 and Re and coul. be devel.ped into regional.cul.ivars depending on the desired panel.of ginsenosides.
