Assessing nest attentiveness of common Terns via video cameras and temperature loggers

Background:While nest attentiveness plays a critical role in the reproductive success of avian species,nest attentiveness data with high temporal resolution is not available for many ***,improvements in both video monitoring and temperature logging devices present an opportunity to increase our understanding of this aspect of avian ***:To investigate nest attentiveness behaviors and evaluate these technologies,we monitored 13 nests across two common Tern(Sterna hirundo)breeding colonies with a paired video camera-temperature logger approach,while monitoring 63 additional nests with temperature loggers *** occurred from May to August of 2017 on Poplar(chesapeake Bay,Maryland,USA)and Skimmer Islands(Isle of Wight Bay,Maryland,USA).We examined data respective to four times of day:Morning(civil dawn‒11:59),Peak(12:00‒16:00),cooling(16:01‒civil dusk),and Night(civil dusk‒civil dawn).Results:While successful nests had mostly short duration off-bouts and maintained consistent nest attentiveness throughout the day,failed nests had dramatic reductions in nest attentiveness during the cooling and Night periods(pcolony experiencing repeated nocturnal abandonment due to predation pressure from a Great Horned Owl(Bubo virginianus).Incubation appeared to ameliorate ambient temperatures during Night,as nests were significantly warmer during Night when birds were on versus off the nest(pccurred during higher ambient temperatures,perhaps due to adults leaving the nest during the hottest periods to perform belly ***,temperature logger data alone had limited ability to predict nest attentiveness status during shorter bouts,with results highly dependent on time of day and bout *** our methods did not affect hatching success(p>0.05),video-monitored nests did have significantly lower clutch sizes(pconclusions:The paired use of iButtons and video ca

cold shock domain(cSD)-containing proteins are one of the groups of the evolutionarily conserved nucleic acid-binding proteins in all three domains of life consisting of an ancient beta-barrel fold that serves to bind nucleic *** c DNA of a novel protein-coding gene containing cSD was cloned from Glaciozyma antarctica designated as *** full length of Ga16676 gene with the size of 1335 bp encodes for an N-terminal cSD with conserved nucleic acids binding motif RNP1 and *** Ga16676 gene was cloned in p ET30 Ek/LIc,sequenced,expressed and its resistance towards cold was *** protein expression of Ga16676 showed overexpressed soluble expression in both supernatant and pellet forms at 20℃.The effects of recombinant cSD protein overexpression on colony formation shows that *** cells were able to grow at 37℃and 20℃but not at 4℃while ***_Ga16676 cells were able to grow at all temperatures *** addition,***_Ga16676 cells showed higher growth rate compared to empty *** cells at 10℃.Structural analysis of Ga16676 reveals some interesting findings such as more aromatic interactions for efficient binding in low energy environment,a longer loop that may contribute to structural flexibility and clustering of charged amino acids on the protein surface that is important for protein stability and flexibility.

The anodic dissolution of metals is an important topic for battery design,material finishing and metal *** liquids are being used in all of these areas but the research on the anodic dissolution is relatively few in these *** study investigates the behaviour of 9 metals in an ionic liquid [c;mim][cl] and a deep eutectic solvent,Ethaline,which is a 1:2 mol ratio mixture of choline chloride and ethylene *** is shown that for the majority of metals studied a quasi-passivation of the metal surface occurs,primarily due to the formation of insoluble films on the electrode *** behaviour of most metals is different in [c;mim][cl] to that in Ethaline due in part to the differences in *** formation of passivating salt films can be decreased with stirring or by increasing the electrolyte temperature,thereby increasing ligand transport to the electrode surface.

classifying forest inventory data into species-based forest community types at broad extents： exploring tradeoffs among supervised and unsupervised approaches

Background： Knowledge of the different kinds of tree communities that currently exist can provide a baseline for assessing the ecological attributes of forests and monitoring future changes. Forest inventory data can facilitate the development of this baseline knowledge across broad extents, but they first must be classified into forest community types. Here, we compared three alternative classifications across the United States using data from over 117,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis （FIA） plots. Methods： Each plot had three forest community type labels：（1）＂FIA＂ types were assigned by the FIA program using a supervised method; （2）＂USNVc＂ types were assigned via a key based on the U.S. National Vegetation classification; （3）＂empirical＂ types resulted from unsupervised clustering of tree species information. We assessed the degree to which analog classes occurred among classifications, compared indicator species values, and used random forest models to determine how well the classifications could be predicted using environmental variables. Results： The classifications generated groups of classes that had broadly similar distributions, but often there was no one-to-one analog across the classifications. The Iongleaf pine forest community type stood out as the exception： it was the only class with strong analogs across all classifications. Analogs were most lacking for forest community types with species that occurred across a range of geographic and environmental conditions, such as Ioblolly pine types, indicator species metrics were generally high for the USNVc, suggesting that LJSNVc classes are floristically well-defined. The empirical classification was best predicted by environmental variables. Optimizing hepatitis c virus treatment through pharmacist interventions: Identification and management of drug-drug interactions

To quantify drug-drug-interactions (DDIs) encountered in patients prescribed hepatitis c virus (HcV) treatment, the interventions made, and the time spent in this *** standard of care, a clinical pharmacist screened for DDIs in patients prescribed direct acting antiviral (DAA) HcV treatment between November 2013 and July 2015 at the University of colorado Hepatology clinic. HcV regimens prescribed included ledipasvir/sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF), paritaprevir/ritonavir/ombitasvir/dasabuvir (OBV/PTV/r + DSV), simeprevir/sofosbuvir (SIM/SOF), and sofosbuvir/ribavirin (SOF/RBV). This retrospective analysis reviewed the work completed by the clinical pharmacist in order to measure the aims identified for the study. The number and type of DDIs identified were summarized with descriptive *** hundred and sixty four patients (83.4% caucasian, 57% male, average 56.7 years old) were identified; 369 for LDV/SOF, 48 for OBV/PTV/r + DSV, 114 for SIM/SOF, and 133 for SOF/RBV. Fifty-one point five per cent of patients were cirrhotic. Overall, 5217 medications were reviewed (7.86 medications per patient) and 781 interactions identified (1.18 interactions per patient). The number of interactions were fewest for SOF/RBV (0.17 interactions per patient) and highest for OBV/PTV/r + DSV (2.48 interactions per patient). LDV/SOF and SIM/SOF had similar number of interactions (1.28 and 1.48 interactions per patient, respectively). Gastric acid modifiers and vitamin/herbal supplements commonly caused interactions with LDV/SOF. Hypertensive agents, analgesics, and psychiatric medications frequently caused interactions with OBV/PTV/r + DSV and SIM/SOF. To manage these interactions, the pharmacists most often recommended discontinuing the medication (28.9%), increasing monitoring for toxicities (24.1%), or separating administration times (18.2%). Soft structural textiles,or softgoods,are used within the space industry for inflatable habitats,parachutes and decelerator *** the safety and structural integrity of these systems occurs through structural health monitoring systems(SHM),which integrate non-invasive/non-destructive testing methods to detect,diagnose,and locate ***/load monitoring of these systems is limited while utilizing traditional strain gauges as these gauges are typically stiff,operate at low temperatures,and fail when subjected to high strain that is a result of high loading classifying them as unsuitable for SHM of soft structural *** this work,a capacitance based strain gauge(cSG)was fabricated via aerosol jet printing(AJP)using silver nanoparticle ink on a flexible polymer *** strain gauges were then compared to a commercially available high elongation resistance-based strain gauge(HE-RSG)for their ability to monitor strained Kevlar straps having a 26.7 kN(6 klbf)***,static and cyclic loads were used to characterize both types of strain monitoring *** cSGs demonstrated superior performance for high elongation strain measurements when compared to commonly used HE-RSGs,and were observed to operate with a gauge factor of 5.2 when the electrode arrangement was perpendicular to the direction of strain.

Response to strict and liberalized specific carbohydrate dietin pediatric crohn's disease

AIM: To investigate the specific carbohydrate diet(ScD) as nutritional therapy for maintenance of remission in pediatric crohn's disease(cD). METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted in 11 pediatric patients with cD who initiated the ScD as therapy at time of diagnosis or flare. Two groups defined as ScD simple(diet alone, antibiotics or 5-ASA) or ScD with immunomodulators(corticosteroids and/or stable thiopurine dosing) were followed for one year and compared on disease characteristics, laboratory values and ***: The mean age at start of the ScD was 11.8 ± 3.0 years(range 6.6-17.6 years) with five patients starting the ScD within 5 wk of diagnosis. Three patients maintained a strict ScD diet for the study period and the mean time for liberalization was 7.7 ± 4.0 mo(range 1-12) for the remaining patients. In both groups, hematocrit, albumin and ESR values improved while on strict ScD and appeared stable after liberalization(P-value 0.006, 0.002, 0.002 respectively). The majority of children gained in weight and height percentile while on strict ScD, with small loss in weight percentile documented with liberalization. cONcLUSION: Disease control may be attainable with the ScD in pediatric cD. Further studies are needed to assess adherence, impact on mucosal healing and growth.

Impact of early eyelid weight placement on the development of synkinesis and recovery in patients with idiopathic facial paralysis

Determine the impact of upper eyelid weight placement at 3 months post onset of idiopathic facial paralysis(IFP)on the recovery of facial function in patients with ***:This is a retrospective review of patients with incomplete recovery of IFPddefined as a Sunnybrook Facial Grading Scale(FGS)score of less than 100,3 months after *** patients with FGS and Facial clinimetric Evaluation(FacE)scores recorded at 3 and 12 months were *** were categorized into 3 groups:Group A,lagophthalmos with eyelid weight placement;Group B,lagophthalmos without eyelid weight placement;Group c,complete eye closure(cEc)without eyelid weight *** eye comfort domain and composite score of the FacE questionnaire were *** eye closure,synkinesis with eye closure,overall synkinesis and the composite score of the FGS were also *** two-tailed t-test was used to evaluate the data comparing the 3 and 12 month FacE and FGS scores within and between the 3 ***:The change in composite FGS score significantly increased from month 3 to month 12 in Group A as compared to Group B(37 vs 4.25,P=0.01).While Group A had significantly lower eye comfort(-12.5,P=0.01),voluntary eye closure(-1.75,P=0.05)and overall FGS scores(-28.75,P=0.04)at 3 months compared to those in Group c,there were no differences between these two groups at 12 month ***:For patients with lagophthalmos at 3 months,early eyelid weight placement may lead to improved facial function at 12 months.
