Individua. prey choices of octopuses： a.e they genera.ist or specia.ist？

Prey choice is often eva.ua.ed a. the species or popula.ion level. Here, we a.a.yzed the diet of octopuses of different popula.ions with the a.m to a.sess the importa.ce of individua. feeding ha.its a. a.fa.tor a.fecting prey choice. Two methods were used, a. a.sessment of the extent to which a. individua. octopus ma.e choices of species representa.ive of those popula.ion （PSi a.d IS） a.d 25% cutoff va.ues for number of choices a.d percenta.e inta.e of individua. on their prey. In one popula.ion of Octopus cfvulga.is in Bermuda.individua.s were genera.ist by IS=0.77, but most chose ma.y prey of the sa.e species, a.d were specia.ists on it by 〉75% inta.e. a.other popula.ion ha. a.wider prey selection, still genera.ist with PSi=0.66, but two individua.s specia.ized by choices. In Bona.re, there wa. a.wide ra.ge of prey species chosen, a.d the popula.ion wa. specia.ists by IS=0.42. Individua. choices revea.ed seven specia.ists a.d four genera.ists. a.popula.ion of Octopus cya.ea.in Ha.a.i a.l ha. simila. choices of crusta.ea.s, so the popula.ion wa. genera.ist by IS with 0.74. But by individua. choices, three were considered a.spe-cia.ist. a.popula.ion of Enteroctopus dofleini from Puget Sound ha. a.wide ra.ge of preferences, in which seven were a.so spe-cia.ists, IS=0.53, By individua. choices, thirteen were a.so specia.ists. Given the octopus specia.ty of lea.ning during fora.ing, we hypothesize tha. both loca.ized prey a.a.la.ility a.d individua. persona.ity differences could influence the explora.ion for prey a.d this tra.sla.es into different prey choices a.ross individua.s a.d popula.ions showed in this study.
