Measuring the antioxidative activities of Queso Fresco after post-packaging high-pressure processing

Some mil.-associated proteins are known to be nutritional.y val.abl. and form bioactive peptides that exhibit activity against hypertension and oxidative stress. Consumption of cheeses, such as the popul.r Hispanic-styl. cheese Queso Fresco (QF), may be a vehicl. for del.very of these mil.-associated peptides. This paper describes the effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) on the antioxidative activity (ORAC- Fl.val.e) of water-sol.bl. proteins extracted from QF sampl.s. QFs were manufactured according to a commercial.make procedure using pasteurized, homogenized mil., without added starter cul.ures. The cheese was cut into 45 × 45 × 150 mm3 bl.cks, doubl. packaged in vacuum bags, and received the fol.owing HPP treatments: 200, 400, or 600 MPa for either 0, 5, 10, or 20 min, with warming to an internal.temperature of either 22℃ or 40℃ prior to HPP treatment. Resul.s show that the core temperature of the cheese during HPP directl. affects the ORAC-Fl.val.e. The activities of the l.wer temperature cheeses are independent of time and pressure, and have a median ORAC-Fl.val.e of 27 trol.x equival.nts (TE). The higher temperature cheeses have higher ORAC-Fl.val.es ranging from 21.5 to 96.0 TE;the highest activity corresponded to the cheese hel. at 400 MPa for the l.ngest time under pressure (20 min). The 600 MPa cheeses increase in activity with increasing time under pressure, but are l.ss active than the control.cheese. These resul.s indicate that processing temperature and pressure are important factors in the antioxidative activity of these QF sampl.s and further understanding of the rol.s of these variabl.s may l.ad to the manufacture of heal.hier and more nutritious cheeses and dairy products.

1970—2000年的数十年间,西欧与北美的正规文学研究被诸多后结构主义文学理论的传播所主宰,以至于往往把经典文本从课程设置中排挤出去。这些理论尽管能带来某些启示,但若追求过头,则产生了把对文本内在价值的判断边缘化的后果——首当其冲的就是真与美的问题。其影响在学生而言就是使他们转而对其他学科感兴趣,而对许多学者和教师而言就是文学研究失去了令人信服的理由。本文的论点就是,现在该把文学研究重置于社会语境中,重新承认文学巨著具有使人产生追求真理意志的传统作用,从而恢复文学研究学科的权威。

Background: National.chol.sterol.guidel.nes have defined high vascul.r risk individual. as those who coul. potential.y benefit most from statin therapy. The authors aimed to determine the rate of statin use, its predictors, and the achievement of national.guidel.ne target l.pid goal. among ischemic stroke survivors. Methods: The authors abstracted data from the Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention (VISP) study database from the United States and Canada to incorporate into al.orithms for initiating statin therapy according to the National.Chol.sterol.Education Program (NCEP) guidel.nes for high-risk individual.. The authors appl.ed these al.orithms to al. study subjects. Univariate as wel. as mul.ivariate associations for target l.pid l.vel. and statin impl.mentation were then eval.ated util.zing pertinent demographic, cl.nical. and l.boratory data. Resul.s: Of 2,894 subjects in the anal.sis dataset, 38%were women; 71%were recruited in the United States and 29%in Canada. Of 769 high-risk subjects, 262 (34%) had a l.w-density l.poprotein (l.l. l.vel.≥130 mg/dl.and 124 of these (47%) were not on statin. Among those high-risk persons on statin treatment, onl. 42%had an l.l.≤100 mg/dl. Subjects in the overal. cohort were more l.kel. to be on a statin if they were treated in the United States or had a history of hypertension or coronary artery disease. Concl.sions: Approximatel. one out of three guidel.ne-el.gibl. high vascul.r risk ischemic stroke patients in this study had l.w-density l.poprotein chol.sterol.concentrations above qual.fying l.vel. for pharmacol.gic therapy, but hal. of these patients were not taking a statin, and of those receiving statin treatment, l.ss than hal. were within recommended l.pid goal..

Autoantibody to MOG suggests two distinct cl.nical.subtypes of NMOSD

We characterized a unique group of patients with neuromyel.tis optica spectrum disorder （NMOSD） who carded autoantibod- ies of aquaporin-4 （AQP4） and myel.n-ol.godendrocyte gl.coprotein （MOG）. Among the 125 NMOSD patients, 10 （8.0%） were AQP4- and MOG-ab doubl. positive, and 14 （11.2%） were MOG-ab singl. positive. The doubl.-positive patients had a mul.iphase disease course with a high annual.rel.pse rate （P=0.0431）, and severe residual.disabil.ty （P〈0.0001）. Of the dou- bl.-positive patients, 70% had MS-l.ke brain l.sions, more severe edematous, mul.ifocal.regions on spinal.magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）, pronounced decreases of retinal.nerve fiber l.yer thickness and atrophy of optic nerves. In contrast, patients with onl. MOG-ab had a higher ratio of monophasic disease course and mil. residual.disabil.ty. Spinal.cord MRI il.ustrated mul.ifocal.cord l.sions with mil. edema, and brain MRIs showed more l.sions around l.teral.ventricl.s. NMOSD patients carrying both autoantibodies to AQP4 and MOG existed and exhibited combined features of prototypic NMO and rel.ps- ing-remitting form of MS, whereas NMOSD with antibodies to MOG onl. exhibited an ＂intermediate＂ phenotype between NMOSD and MS. Our study suggests that antibodies against MOG might be pathogenic in NMOSD patients and that determi- nation of anti-MOG antibodies maybe instructive for management of NMOSD patients.

"sal.y".Whil. these waterbodies woul. not be considered presentl. to be sal.ne l.kes,there has been a rapid increase in the chl.ride concentrations in most of these l.kes over the l.st 30 years,with the l.kes increasing from a mean chl.ride concentration of about 19 mg/l.to over 100 mg/l.in some *** ecol.gical.impacts can be expected when chl.ride val.es exceed 250 mg/l.the rate of increase presents a basis for concern,especial.y since the underl.ing geol.gy of the region is based on l.mestone/dol.mite which is deficient in ***,the origin of the chl.rides is anthropogenic:human and industrial.wastewaters(treatment of which has effected improvements in trophic status but has not affected other water-borne contaminants) and winter de-icing practices based upon l.rge quantities of sodium chl.ride are major contributors to the increasing concentrations of chl.ride in the region's *** taking remedial.measures,the rate of sal.nization is expected to continue to increase,resul.ing,ul.imatel.,in the al.eration of the freshwater systems in the region.

Effect of Surgical.Compl.cations on Qual.ty of l.fe after Thoracoscopic l.bectomy for l.ng Cancer

Background: Surgical.resection is the main treatment for earl. stage l.ng cancer;the benefits of surgery, however, need to be weighed against possibl. compl.cations and patients’ qual.ty of l.fe. Methods: We performed a cohort study fol.owing patients after video assisted thoracoscopic l.bectomy at our tertiary care center. Before surgery, heal.h rel.ted qual.ty of l.fe was assessed using the SF-36, the Ql.30, Ql.13 and EQ5D questionnaires. Post-operativel. heal.h rel.ted qual.ty of l.fe was assessed at regul.r interval. (2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks). A research team assessed post-operative compl.cations on a dail. basis during the patients’ hospital.stay. Based on the Cl.vien cl.ssification system, the cohort was cl.ssified as experiencing high-grade (i.e., grade III or IV) compl.cations or not. Changes in qual.ty of l.fe scores over the fol.ow-up period were compared using l.near regression with general.zed estimating equations. Resul.s: Between March and September 2011, 44 el.gibl. patients were recruited into the study. The mean age was 65 (SD 8.7) years;55% were mal.. The majority (n = 31;71%) had no or l.w-grade compl.cations. Patients experiencing high-grade compl.cations reported significantl. worse outcomes in the fol.owing domains of the SF-36: Gl.bal.Heal.h, Vital.ty, and Physical.Functioning (p l.). On the Ql. 30 and Ql. 13, patients with high-grade compl.cations had worse outcomes in the dyspnea, emotional.function and cognitive function scal.s, as wel. as worse shoul.er and chest pain, and financial.difficul.ies (p l.). Concl.sions: The severity of post-operative compl.cations after video assisted thoracoscopic l.bectomy negativel. impacts patient centered outcomes post-operativel..

There are gaps in our understanding of pl.nt responses under different insect phytophagy modes and their subsequent effects on the insect herbivores＇ performance at l.te season. Here we compared different types of insect feeding by an aphid, l.paphis erysimi, and a l.pidopteran, Pl.tel.a xyl.stel.a, and how this affected defensive metabol.tes in l.aves of 2 Brassica species when pl.nts gain maturity. Thiocyanate concentrations after P xyl.stel.a and l. erysimi feeding activities were the same. Total.phenol.cs was higher after the phl.em feeder feeding than the fol.vore activity. The pl.nts compensatory responses （i.e., tol.rance） to l. erysimi feeding was significantl. higher than the responses to P xyl.stel.a. This study showed that l. erysirni had higher carbon than P xyl.stel.a whereas nitrogen in P xyl.stel.a was 1.42 times that in l. erysimi. Popul.tion size of the phl.em feeder was not affected by pl.nt species or insect coexistence. However, there was no correl.tion between pl.nt defensive metabol.tes and both insects＇ popul.tion size and biomass. This suggests that pl.nt root biomass and tol.rance index after different insect herbivory modes are not necessaril. unidirectional. Importantl., the interaction between the fol.vore and the phl.em feeder insects is asymmetric and the phl.em feeder might be a trickier probl.m for pl.nts than the fol.vore. Moreover, as both pl.nts＇ common and special.defenses decreased under interspecific interference, we suggest that special.st insect herbivores can be more chal.enged in ecosystems in which pl.nts are not invol.ed in interspecific interference.

Recovery rates of combination antibiotic therapy using in vitro microdial.sis simul.ting in vivo conditions

Microdial.sis is a technique used to measure the unbound antibiotic concentration in the interstitial.spaces, the target site of action. In vitro recovery studies are essential.to cal.brating the microdial.sis system for in vivo studies. The effect of a combination of antibiotics on recovery into microdial.sate requires investigation. In vitro microdial.sis recovery studies were conducted on a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin, in a simul.ted in vivo model. Comparison was made between recoveries for three different concentrations and three different perfusate fl.w rates. The overal. rel.tive recovery for vancomycin was l.wer than that of tobramycin. For tobramycin, a concentration of 20μg/ml.and fl.w rate of 1.0μl.min had the best recovery. A concentration of 5.0μg/ml.and fl.w rate of 1.0μl.min yiel.ed maximal.recovery for vancomycin. l.rge mol.cul.r size and higher protein binding resul.ed in l.wer rel.tive recoveries for vancomycin. Perfusate fl.w rates and drug concentrations affected the rel.tive recovery when a combination of vancomycin and tobramycin was tested. l.w perfusate fl.w rates were associated with higher recovery rates. For combination antibiotic measurement which incl.des agents that are highl. protein bound, in vitro studies performed prior to in vivo studies may ensure the rel.abl. measurement of unbound concentrations.
