Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein activates splenic T cells during sepsis in a TLR4-dependent manner

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is a novel inflammatory mediator that stimulates the release of proinflammatory cytokines from macrophages in sepsis. Given the immune dysregulation that characterizes sepsis, the effect of CIRP on other immune cells is an area of increasing interest that has not yet been studied. In the present study, we hypothesized that extracellular CIRP promotes activation of T lymphocytes in the spleen during sepsis. We observed that mice subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture showed significantly higher expression of the early activation markers CD69 and CD25 at 20 h on CD4+ splenic T cells, and significantly higher CD69 expression on CD8+ splenic T cells compared with sham-operated controls. Furthermore, at 20 h after receiving intravenous injection of recombinant murine CIRP (rmCIRP, 5 mg/kg body weight (BW)) or PBS (vehicle), those mice receiving rmCIRP showed significantly increased expression of CD69 and CD25 on both CD4+ and CD8+ splenic T cells. This effect, however, was not seen in TLR4-deficient mice after rmCIRP injection. In addition, treatment with CIRP predisposed CD4+ T cells to a Th1 hyperinflammatory response profile, and influenced CD8+ T cells toward a cytotoxic profile. Taken together, our findings indicate that CIRP is a proinflammatory mediator that plays an important role in T-cell dysregulation during sepsis in a TLR4-dependent manner.

Revealing the surface atomic arrangement of noble metal alkane dehydrogenation catalysts by a stepwise reduction-oxidation approach

Surface characterization of metal nanoparticles is a critical need in nanocatalysis for in-depth understanding of the structure-function *** surface structure of nanoparticles is often different from the subsurface,and it is challenging to separately characterize the surface and the *** this work,theoretical calculations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS)analysis illustrate that the surface atoms of noble metals(Pt and Pd)are oxidized in the air,while the subsurface atoms are not easily *** advantage of the oxidation properties,we suggest a stepwise reduction-oxidation approach to determine the surface atomic arrangement of noble metal nanoparticles,and confirm the rationality of this approach by identifying the surface structure of typical 2-3 nm Pt and Pd *** reduction-oxidation approach is applied to characterize the surface structure of model Pd-Sb bimetallic catalyst,which illustrates that the surface Pd is well isolated by Sb atoms with short bond distance at 2.70Å,while there are still Pd-Pd bonds in the *** functional theory(DFT)calculations and Pd L edge X-ray absorption near edge structure(XANES)indicate that the isolation of surface Pd significantly decreases the adsorption energies of Pd-hydrocarbon,which leads to the high propylene selectivity and turnover frequency Pd-Sb bimetallic catalyst for propane dehydrogenation.

Nature provides significant benefits to people,especially those living in and around protected *** services from protected areas include producing wild food,supporting biodiversity and water cycles,regulating climate,and providing cultural services like better health,tourism,and legacy for future *** economic terms,the flows of ecosystem services provided by protected areas are worth hundreds of billions of dollars each year,well justifying the costs of managing these sites,but protected areas are suffering from environmental problems such as impacts from human population growth,rural poverty,growing demands for natural resources,land use change that degrades ecosystem productivity,invasive non-native species that harm natural ecosystems,and climate change that is affecting all *** these linked challenges will require mobilizing all parts of the economy,including the protected area *** example,protected areas can take a leadership role in rural development,expand the conservation estate to half of the planet through connectivity and improved management of more of the non-agricultural land,enhance the prominent role of protected areas in contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation,encourage productive research on applying modern technology to protected areas management,seek broader private sector participation in conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services,and include protected areas as relevant parties in relevant trade and other international *** protected area managers embrace this broader role,they will find enthusiastic public support for this contribution to a sustainable human society.

Enhanced propellant performance via environmentally friendly curable surface coating

Surface coating of granular propellants is widely used in a multiplicity of propellants for small, medium and large caliber ammunition. All small caliber ball propellants exhibit burning progressivity due to application of effective deterrent coatings. Large perforated propellant grains have also begun utilizing plasticizing and impregnated deterrent coatings with the purpose of increasing charge weights for greater energy and velocity for the projectile. The deterrent coating and impregnation process utilizes volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants(HAPs) which results in propellants that need to be forced air dried which impacts air quality. Propellants undergo temperature fluctuations during their life. Diffusion coefficients vary exponentially with variations in temperature. A small temperature increase can induce a faster migration, even over a short period of time, which can lead to large deviations in the concentration. This large concentration change in the ammunition becomes a safety or performance liability. The presence of both polymeric deterrents and nitroglycerin(NG) in the nitrocellulose matrix and organic solvents leads to higher diffusion rates. This results in continued emissions of VOCs and HAPs. Conventional polymers tend to partition within the propellant matrix. In other words,localized mixing can occur between the polymer and underlying propellant. This is due to solvent induced softening of the polymer vehicle over the propellant grain. In effect this creates a path where migration can occur. Since nitrate esters, like NG, are relatively small, it can exude to the surface and create a highly unstable and dangerous situation for the warfighter. Curable polymers do not suffer from this partitioning due to "melting" because no VOC solvents are present. They remain surface coated.
