Antenna-assisted picosecond control of nanoscale phase transition in vanadium dioxide

Nanoscale devices in which the interaction with light can be configured using external control signals hold great interest for next-generation optoelectronic *** exhibiting a structural or electronic phase transition offer a large modulation contrast with multi-level optical switching and memory *** addition,plasmonic nanoantennas can provide an efficient enhancement mechanism for both the optically induced excitation and the readout of materials strategically positioned in their local ***,we demonstrate picosecond all-optical switching of the local phase transition in plasmonic antenna-vanadium dioxide(VO_(2))hybrids,exploiting strong resonant field enhancement and selective optical pumping in plasmonic ***-and wavelength-dependent pump–probe spectroscopy of multifrequency crossed antenna arrays shows that nanoscale optical switching in plasmonic hotspots does not affect neighboring antennas placed within 100 nm of the excited *** antenna-assisted pumping mechanism is confirmed by numerical model calculations of the resonant,antenna-mediated local heating on a picosecond time *** hybrid,nanoscale excitation mechanism results in 20 times reduced switching energies and 5 times faster recovery times than a VO_(2) film without antennas,enabling fully reversible switching at over two million cycles per second and at local switching energies in the picojoule *** hybrid solution of antennas and VO_(2) provides a conceptual framework to merge the field localization and phase-transition response,enabling precise,nanoscale optical memory functionalities.

Significance of glacio-morphological factors in glacier retreat：a case study of part of Chenab basin,Himalaya

A study has been carried out in part of Chenab basin,Himalaya to understand the relationship between glacio-morphological factors and change in glacial area. Initially change in areal extent of glaciers was derived for two time frames(1962-2001/02 and 2001/02-2010/11). The study comprised of 324 glaciers for the monitoring period of 1962-2001/02 for,which 11% loss in glacial area was observed. Two hundred and thirty-eight glaciers were further monitored between 2001/02 and 2010/11. These glaciers showed an area loss of 1.1%. The annual deglaciation has been found to be higher during the period of 1962-2001/02 compared to 2001/02-2010/11. The spatial and temporal variability in deglaciation was also addressed usingglacio-morphic parameters. Area,length,percentage of debris cover,and various elevation parameters of glaciers were observed to have significant controls on relationships to the rate of glacial shrinkage. Largerarea and longer glaciers show a lower percentage of retreat than smaller and shorter ones. moreover,glaciers located at lower altitudes and having gentle slopes show more area retreat. The results of area retreat in debris covered and debris free glaciers supports that the glaciers covered by debris retard ice melting at some extent. 158 glaciers were observed having no debris cover,and these exhibit 14% of loss in surface area. In glaciers having 40% debris cover,8% of deglaciation was observed. The glaciers located below equilibrium line altitude(ELA) have experienced 4.6% of deglaciation for the time frame 2001/02 – 2010/11 whereas it was found to be 1.1% for the glaciers occurring above ELA. However,theorientation of glaciers did not show any considerable influence on glacial change based on hypothesis.

Rapid earthquake focal mechanism inversion using high-rate GPS velometers in sparse network

In this study, we demonstrate an approach for inverting earthquake source parameters based on high-rate global positioning system(GPS) velocity seismograms. The velocity records obtained from single-station GPS velocity solutions with broadcast ephemeris are used directly for earthquake source parameter inversion using the Cut and Paste method, without requiring conversion of the velocity records into displacement records. Taking the El mayor-Cucapah earthquake as an example, GPS velocity records from 10 stations with reasonable azimuthal coverage provide earthquake source parameters very close to those from the Global centroid moment tensor(Global CmT) solution. In sparse network tests, robust source parameters with acceptable bias can be achieved with as few as three stations. When the number of stations is reduced to two, the bias in rake angle becomes appreciable, but the magnitude and strike estimations are still robust. The results of this study demonstrate that rapid and reliable estimation of earthquake source parameters can be obtained from GPS velocity data. These parameters could be used for early earthquake warning and shake map construction, because such GPS velocity records can be obtained in real time.

Background and purpose The therapeutic potential of different stem cells for ischaemic stroke treatment is intriguing and somewhat *** results from our laboratory have demonstrated the potential benefits of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells(mSC)in a rodent stroke *** hypothesised that mSC treatment would effectively promote the recovery of sensory and motor function in both males and females,despite any apparent sex differences in post stroke brain *** Transient focal cerebral ischaemia was induced in adult Sprague-Dawley rats by occlusion of the middle cerebral *** the procedure,male and female rats of the untreated group were euthanised 1 day after reperfusion and their brains were used to estimate the resulting infarct volume and tissue *** groups of stroke-induced male and female rats were treated with mSC or vehicle and were subsequently subjected to a battery of standard neurological/neurobehavioral tests(modified Neurological Severity Score assessment,adhesive tape removal,beam walk and rotarod).The tests were administered at regular intervals(at days 1,3,5,7 and 14)after reperfusion to determine the time course of neurological and functional recovery after *** The infarct volume and extent of swelling of the ischaemic brain were similar in males and *** similar pathological stroke lesions,the clinical manifestations of stroke were more pronounced in males than females,as indicated by the neurological scores and other *** treatment significantly improved the recovery of sensory and motor function in both sexes,and it demonstrated efficacy in both moderate stroke(females)and severe stroke(males).Conclusions Despite sex differences in the severity of post stroke outcomes,mSC treatment promoted the recovery of sensory and motor function in male and female rats,suggesting that it may be a promising treatment for stroke.

Quantification and pharmacokinetic study of tumor-targeting agent mHI148-clorgyline amide in mouse plasma using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

A high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometric （HPLC- ESI-mS/mS） method was developed for the quantification of mHl148-clorgyline amide （Nml-amide）, a novel tumor-targeting monoamine oxidase A inhibitor, in mouse plasma. The method was validated in terms of sensitivity, precision, accuracy, recovery and stability and then applied to a pharmacokinetic study of Nml-amide in mice following intravenous administration. Nml-amide together with the internal standard （IS）, mHI-148, was extracted by protein precipitation using acetonitrile. multiple reaction monitoring was used for quantification of Nml-amide by detecting m/z transition of 491.2-361.9, and 685.3-258.2 for Nml-amide and the IS, respectively. The lower limit of quantification （LLOQ） of the HPLC- mS/mS method for Nml-amide was 0.005 μg/mL and the linear calibration curve was acquired with R2〉 0.99 in the concentration range of 0.005-2μg/mL. The intra- and inter-day precisions of the assay were assessed by percentage of the coefficient of variations, which was within 9.8% at LLOQ and 14.0% for other quality control samples, whereas the mean accuracy ranged from 86.8% to 113.2%. The samples were stable under storage and experimental conditions. This method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study in mice following intravenous administration of 5 mg/kg Nml-amide.

Copper Delivery by the Copper Chaperone for Chloroplast and Cytosolic Copper/Zinc- Superoxide Dismutases： Regulation and Unexpected Phenotypes in an Arabidopsis mutant

Copper （Cu） is an important mineral nutrient found in chloroplasts as a cofactor associated with plastocyanin and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase （Cu/ZnSOD）. Superoxide dismutases are metallo-enzymes found in most oxygenic organisms with proposed roles in reducing oxidative stress. Several recent studies in Arabidopsis have shown that microRNAs and a SQUAmOSA promoter binding protein-like7 （SPL7） transcription factor function to down-regulate the expression of many Cu-proteins, including Cu/ZnSOD in both plastids and the cytosol, during growth on low Cu. Plants contain the Cu Chaperone for SOD （CCS） that delivers Cu to Cu/ZnSODs, and, in Arabidopsis, both cytosolic and plastidic CCS versions are encoded by one gene. In this study, we demonstrate that Arabiclopsis CCS transcript levels are regulated by Cu, mediated by microRNA 398 that was not previously predicted to target CCS. The microRNA target site is conserved in CCS of Oryza sativa. The data suggest that Cu-regulated microRNAs may have more mRNA targets than was previously predicted. A CCS null mutant has no measurable SOD activity in the chloroplast and cytosol, indicating an absolute requirement for CCS. When the CCS null mutant was grown on high Cu media, it lacked both Fe superoxide dismutase （FeSOD） and Cu/ZnSOD activity. However, this did not lead to a visual phenotype and no photosynthetic deficiencies were detected, even after high light stress. These results indicate that Cu/ZnSOD is not a pivotal component of the photosynthetic anti-oxidant system during growth in laboratory conditions.

half-Heusler materials are strong candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their high weighted mobilities and power factors,which is known to be correlated to valley degeneracy in the electronic band ***,there are over 50 known semiconducting half-Heusler phases,and it is not clear how the chemical composition affects the electronic *** all the n-type electronic structures have their conduction band minimum at either theΓ-or X-point,there is more diversity in the p-type electronic structures,and the valence band maximum can be at either theΓ-,L-,or ***,we use high throughput computation and machine learning to compare the valence bands of known half-Heusler compounds and discover new chemical guidelines for promoting the highly degenerate W-point to the valence band *** do this by constructing an“orbital phase diagram”to cluster the variety of electronic structures expressed by these phases into groups,based on the atomic orbitals that contribute most to their valence ***,with the aid of machine learning,we develop new chemical rules that predict the location of the valence band maximum in each of the *** rules can be used to engineer band structures with band convergence and high valley degeneracy.
