To search for genes associated with migratory phenotypes in songbirds,we selected candidate genes through annotations from the Mouse Genome Informatics database and assembled an extensive candidate-gene ***,we implemented a next-generation sequencing approach to obtain DNA sequences from the Painted Bunting *** focused on those sequences that were conserved across avian species and that aligned with candidate genes in our mouse *** genotyped short sequence repeats from the following candidate genes:ADRA1d,ANKRD17,CISH and *** studied the possible correlations between allelic variations occurring in these novel candidate migration genes and avian migratory phenotypes available from the published lit*** found that allele variation at MYH7 correlated with a calculated index of speed of migration(km/day)across 11 species of *** highlight the potential of the Mouse Genome Informatics database in providing new candidate genes that might play a crucial role in regulating migration in birds and possibly in other *** research effort shows the benefits and limitations of working with extensive genomic datasets and offers a snapshot of the challenges related to cross-species validation in behavioral and molecular ecology studies.

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is a novel inflammatory mediator that stimulates the release of proinflammatory cytokines from macrophages in sepsis. Given the immune dysregulation that characterizes sepsis, the effect of CIRP on other immune cells is an area of increasing interest that has not yet been studied. In the present study, we hypothesized that extracellular CIRP promotes activation of T lymphocytes in the spleen during sepsis. We observed that mice subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture showed significantly higher expression of the early activation markers CD69 and CD25 at 20 h on CD4+ splenic T cells, and significantly higher CD69 expression on CD8+ splenic T cells compared with sham-operated controls. furthermore, at 20 h after receiving intravenous injection of recombinant murine CIRP (rmCIRP, 5 mg/kg body weight (BW)) or PBS (vehicle), those mice receiving rmCIRP showed significantly increased expression of CD69 and CD25 on both CD4+ and CD8+ splenic T cells. This effect, however, was not seen in TLR4-deficient mice after rmCIRP injection. In addition, treatment with CIRP predisposed CD4+ T cells to a Th1 hyperinflammatory response profile, and influenced CD8+ T cells toward a cytotoxic profile. Taken together, our findings indicate that CIRP is a proinflammatory mediator that plays an important role in T-cell dysregulation during sepsis in a TLR4-dependent manner.

Capacities in facing Natural Hazards: A Small Island Perspective

Isolated communities on small islands are often characterized as vulnerable and marginalized. We studied the recent history of Laingpatehi, a village on Ruang Island off the north coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia to show that the marginalization-vulnerability nexus can be offset by capacity and social cohesion to enable sustainable livelihoods. The island has been impacted by volcanic eruptions,earthquakes, and competition for marine resources from mainland-based fishermen. The community has shown a remarkable ability to cope and prosper in the face of a series of external hazards. We used a sustainable livelihoods approach to identify the assets that enabled the villagers to cope. Strong social cohesion was central to the ability to organize the community and confront hazards. A diversified livelihood strategy drawing on the small island environment and its coastal and marine resources, income generating activities in a distant satellite village, and significant remittances from employment in other parts of Indonesia underpinned people’s capacities to face *** assistance played a supporting role. The case of Laingpatehi demonstrates how remoteness, rather than being a source of vulnerability, can provide access to existing resources and facilitate innovation. Disaster risk reduction strategies should focus more on reinforcing these existing capacities to deal with hazards and less on physical protection and postdisaster responses.

This study investigates misregistration issues between Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager and Sentinel-2A/Multi-Spectral Instrument at 30 m resolution,and between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images at 10 m resolution using a phase-correlation approach and multiple transformation ***-registration of 45 Landsat-8 to Sentinel-2A pairs and 37 Sentinel-2A to Sentinel-2A pairs were *** correlation proved to be a robust approach that allowed us to identify hundreds and thousands of control points on images acquired more than 100 days ***,misregistration of up to 1.6 pixels at 30 m resolution between Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A images,and 1.2 pixels and 2.8 pixels at 10 m resolution between multi-temporal Sentinel-2A images from the same and different orbits,respectively,were *** non-linear random forest regression used for constructing the mapping function showed best results in terms of root mean square error(RMSE),yielding an average RMSE error of 0.07±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution,and 0.09±0.05 and 0.15±0.06 pixels at 10 m resolution for the same and adjacent Sentinel-2A orbits,respectively,for multiple tiles and multiple conditions.A simpler 1st order polynomial function(affine transformation)yielded RMSE of 0.08±0.02 pixels at 30 m resolution and 0.12±0.06(same Sentinel-2A orbits)and 0.20±0.09(adjacent orbits)pixels at 10 m resolution.

Little is known about how plants regulate their folate content, including whether the expression of folate biosynthesis genes is orchestrated during development or modulated by folate levels. Nor is much known about how folate levels impact the expression of other genes. These points were addressed using wild-type tomato fruit and fruit engineered for high folate content. In wild-type fruit, the expression of genes specifying early steps in folate biosynthesis declined during development but that of other genes did not. In engineered fruit overexpressing foreign GTP cyclohy- drolase I and aminodeoxychorismate synthase genes, the expression of the respective endogenous genes did not change, but that of three downstream pathway genes--aminodeoxychorismate lyase, dihydroneopterin aldolase, and mitochondrial folylpolyglutamate synthase--respectively increased by up to 7.8-, 2.8-, and 1.7-fold, apparently in response to the build-up of specific folate pathway metabolites. These results indicate that, in fruit, certain folate pathway genes are developmentally regulated and that certain others are subject to feedforward control by pathway intermediates. Micro- array analysis showed that only 14 other transcripts （of 11 000 surveyed） increased in abundance by two-fold or more in high-folate fruit, demonstrating that the induction of folate pathway genes is relatively specific.

High performance Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) has been used to determine the hydrodynamic di-ameters of CdSe nanocrystals as well as CdSe cluster molecules in a size range of 1 to 10 nm (Eichh鰂er et al., 2001). The method enables the determination of their particle size, including their ligand shells, in solution. The results are consistent with the blue shift of the absorption bands, as well as Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) experiments. The sizes of the cluster molecules were estimated from space filling models constructed from the results of a single crystal X-ray structure determination. DLS gave comparable results for the size of both types of compound, indicating that it is potentially an important additional measurement technique to TEM, which uses harsh measurement conditions, and to powder X-ray diffraction, which is difficult to interpret below 5 nm.
