The essays that follow in this Spec.al Sec.ion were initially formulated as c.ntributions to a forthc.ming book, The c.isis of Journalism Rec.nsidered： c.ltural Power （alexander et al. 2015）. They are its three pivotal essays, presenting the most theoretic.lly developed and empiric.lly grounded exemplific.tions of the c.ltural- soc.ologic.l approac. that makes the volume distinc.. As the reader will see, it is bec.use these essays are c.ltural-soc.ologic.l that they are able to bring a dramatic.lly different perspec.ive to bear on the c.ntemporary c.isis of journalism. Rather than seeing tec.nologic.l and ec.nomic.c.ange as the primary c.uses of c.rrent anxieties, eac. essay draws spec.al attention to the role played by the c.ltural c.mmitments of journalism itself. Eac. links the professional ethic. to the democ.atic.aspirations of the broader soc.eties in whic. journalists ply their c.aft, insisting that new digital tec.nologies are being shaped to sustain value c.mmitments rather than undermining them. In this brief introduc.ion to the Spec.al Sec.ion, I provide a broader c.ntext for the distinc.ive perspec.ive that informs these three essays. First, I c.ntrast the c.ltural-soc.ologic.l approac. with the reduc.ionism that marks other c.ntemporary approac.es to journalism. Sec.nd, I situate c.ltural soc.ology theoretic.lly in the broad historic.l arc.of soc.al thought.

Whether from a liberal or a radic.l perspec.ive, the transition to modernity has been hailed not only as a great ac.ievement but as providing the c.ltural and institutional foundations for a good soc.ety. Yet, modernity has been driven by terrible soc.al stsains, immense c.nflic.s, searing soc.al stigmas, and radic.l exc.usion. A satisfac.ory soc.al theory must c.nc.ptualize the dark side of modernity as well as the ligt. This essay identifies nine dangerous fric.ions inherent in modernity and also defines mec.anisms for their possible repair. c.itic. of modernity have ignored the fac. that it does provide self-c.rrec.ing c.pac.ties, though these c.pac.ties are never fully developed and never adequately applied.

For the US, c.ina＇s rise presents an extraordinary c.allenge. Many c.lled the twentieth c.ntury the ＂ Americ.n c.ntury,＂ just as the nineteenth was the ＂British c.ntury. ＂ Yet the United Nations found in 2007 that no fewer than a dozen c.untries have in our twenty-first c.ntury advanc.d beyond the United States in overall development per c.pita. This feat the People＇s Republic.of c.ina has not yet ac.omplished, and whether it ever will remain to be seen.

Nic.tinamide adenine dinuc.eotide(NADH)is a c.fac.or that serves to shuttle elec.rons during metabolic.proc.sses suc. as glyc.lysis,the tric.rboxylic.ac.d c.c.e,and oxidative phosphorylation(OXPHOS).NADH is autofluoresc.nt,and itsfluoresc.nc. lifetime c.n be used to infer metabolic.dynamic. in living ***-c.upled time-c.rrelated single photon c.unting(Tc.Pc.equipped with an implantable needle probe c.n be used to measure NADH lifetime in vivo,enabling investigation of c.anging metabolic.demand during musc.e c.ntrac.ion or tissue *** study illustrates a proof of c.nc.pt for point-based,minimally-invasive NADHfluoresc.nc. lifetime measurement in *** musc.e loss(VML)injuries were c.eated in the left tibialis anterior(TA)musc.e of male Sprague Dawley *** lifetime measurements were c.llec.ed before,during,and after a 30 s tetanic.c.ntrac.ion in the injured and uninjured TA musc.es,whic. was subsequently-t to a biexponential dec.y model to yield a metric.of NADH utilization(c.toplasmic.vs protein-bound NADH,the A11/A22 ratio).On average,this ratio was higher during and after c.ntrac.ion in uninjured musc.e c.mpared to musc.e at rest,suggesting higher levels of free NADH in c.ntrac.ing and rec.vering musc.e,indic.ting inc.eased rates of *** injured musc.e,this ratio was higher than uninjured musc.e overall but dec.eased over time,whic. is c.nsistent with c.rrent knowledge of inflammatory response to injury,suggesting tissue regeneration has *** data suggest that-ber-c.upled Tc.Pc.has the potential to measure c.anges in NADH binding in vivo in a minimally invasive manner that requires further investigation.

Effic.ent detec.ion of single optic.l c.ntres in solids is essential for quantum information proc.ssing, sensing and single-photon generation *** this work,we use radio-frequenc.（RF） reflec.ometry to elec.ric.lly detec. the photoionisation induc.d by a single Er3+ion in *** high bandwidth and sensitivity of the RF reflec.ometry provide sub-100-ns time resolution for the photoionisation *** this tec.nique,the optic.lly exc.ted state lifetime of a single Er3+ion in a Si nano-transistor is measured for the first time to be 0.49±0.04μ*** results demonstrate an effic.ent approac. for detec.ing a c.arge state c.ange induc.d by Er exc.tation and *** approac. c.uld be used for fast readout of other single optic.l c.ntres in solids and is attrac.ive for large-sc.le integrated optic.l quantum systems thanks to the multi-c.annel RF reflec.ometry demonstrated with frequenc. multiplexing tec.niques.
