A description of the future as it might be without forecasts, predictions and trend analysis can be referred to as a 'future scenario'. An abundance of scenarios literature exists in which numerous pictures have been painted of changed future worlds. However, upon closer inspection it becomes apparent that virtually all of this literature refers to changes occurring above ground, ignoring the inevitable consequences (or opportunities) for sustainable use of underground space, not least in densely populated urban areas, some of which may be underlain by complex geological conditions. This paper reports on the development (to date) of an 'Urban futures' (Uf) toolkit for sub-surface environments (including infrastructure and utilities) which, through use of 'key' questions 'sustainable' indicators and a 'contextual' narrative, allows for better definition and measured performance of underground space in the UK, both today and in the future. The toolkit explores possible uses for underground space within 4 plausible and well-cited future scenarios (i.e. New Sustainability Paradigm, fortress World, Market forces and Policy Reform). This forms part of a much larger generic toolkit which the Uf research team are developing for exploring possible future scenarios over a range of UK urban regeneration case study areas.

Electrical double layer （EDL） capacitors based on recently emergent graphene materials have shown several folds performance improvement compared to conventional porous carbon materials, driving a wave of technology breakthrough in portable and renewable energy storage. Accordingly, much interest has been generated to pursue a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental yet elusive double layer structure at file electrode^electrolyte interface. In this paper, we carried out comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations to obtain a com- prehensive picture of how ion type, solvent properties, and charging conditions affect the EDL structure at the graphene electrode surface, and thereby its contribution to capacitance. We show that different symmetrical monovalent aqueous electrolytes M^X- （M~ = Na~, K~, Rb＋, and Cs＋; X- = f-, CI-, and I ） indeed have distinctive EDL structures. Larger ions, such as, Rb＊, Cs＊, C1, and I, undergo partial dehydration and penetrate through the first water layer next to the graphene electrode surfaces under charging. As such, the electrical potential distribution through the EDL strongly depends on the ion type. Interestingly, we further reveal that the water can play a critical role in determining the capacitance value. The change of dielectric constant of water in different electrolytes largely cancels out the variance in electric potential drop across the EDL of different ion type. Our simulation sheds new lights on how the interplay between solvent molecules and EDL structure cooperatively contributes to capacitance, which agrees with our experimental results well.

The aim of the international project “Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS)" headed by the US Geological Survey is to establish a world wide glacier inventory based on satellite *** data set will form a first digital baseline study for future glacier *** presented GIS_based glacier inventory for King George Island is a case study for the area of the Antarctic *** the database of the glacier inventory topographic information,specific glaciological parameters as well as metadata will be *** topographic data consists of drainage basin limits,basin areas,altitudinal ranges,perimeters and mean *** data sets should comprise information on glacier retreat in different periods,glacier velocities,ice thickness and bedrock topography as well as derived *** and measured mass balance parameters could be included as additional data *** particular,these metadata records must comprise background information on data accuracy and data sources and should be compatible with a future data model for the King George Island GIS (KGIS).Three examples illustrate that the GLIMS database will not only contain information valuable for glaciological applications,but also other environmental studies on the island will benefit from this standardised remote sensing data ***,a very close link between the data models of KGIS and GLIMS has to be established to enable these ***,better access to historic aerial photography would enable a continuous record of glacier retreat from the beginning of the 1950’s onward.

A GIS is proposed as a tool for the managing plan for the Antarctic specially managed area (ASMA) in Admiralty *** ASMA comprises the area considered to be within the glacial drainage basin of the ***,it includes part of SSSI No.8 adjacent to the area but outside of the glacial drainage *** stations and six refuges are located in the *** a SPOT satellite image map,the limits of the ASMA are marked and its area is re_*** consists of 362 km 2,including 186 km 2 island ice field and small cirque glaciers and 32 km 2 ice_free *** rest comprises water of the bay and a small adjacent area (8 km 2) of the Bransfield *** ASMA_GIS will consists of 12 data layers ranging from the physiographic settings to the biological and administrative *** data will be implemented into Arc/Info GIS according to the cartographic guidelines of the SCAR WG_***,five plans of information will be realised using a topographic database compiled from various sources and data from the revised bathymetric chart published by the Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Survey and also including: 1) Limits of the ASMA and protected areas;2) Glaciological features (*** basin limits) and 3) Human presence (*** and historical sites).These basic GIS layers will be operational in early ***,additional data on the remaining layers (***,geology and geomorphology) will be included from published sources. The ASMA_GIS will form an important database for environmental monitoring and studies surveying temporal changes of features such as glacier front positions or bird breading sites.

Cu- and Ni-codoped feZnO particles with the wurzite structure were successfully synthesized at low temperature by a co-precipitation method. The samples were characterized using a vibrating sample magnetometer, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry and electron spin resonance. The results demonstrated that room temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in both samples and the magnetization was higher than that of fe-doped ZnO. The correlation between the structural and magnetic properties is discussed.

A versatile Hall magnetometer has been developed, manufactured, calibrated, and turned operational for measurements of the magnetic properties of bulk materials and magnetic micro- and nanoparticles. The magnetometer was constructed from the combination of various equipments, which was usually available in most laboratories, such as a Hall effect sensor, an electromagnet, a current source, and a linear actuator. The achieved sensitivity to the magnetic moment was approximately 10-8 Am2. The results were compared to measurements performed with commercial vibrating-sample magnetometers and superconductor quantum interference devices (SQUID) and showed errors of around 1.7% and a standard deviation of 1.2% in relation to measures themselves. The constructed Hall magnetometer records a magnetic hysteresis loop of up to 1.2 T at room temperature. This magnetometer is cost-effective, versatile, and suitable for research.

An improved topographic database for King George Island,one of the most frequently visited regions in Antarctica,is presented.A first step consisted in combining data from differential GPS surveys gained during the austral summers 1997～1998 and 1999～2000,with the current coastline from a SPOT satellite image mosaic,topographic information from existing maps and from the Antarctic Digital *** this data sets,a digital terrain model (DTM) was generated using Arc/Info *** a second step,a satellite image map at the scale 1∶100 000 was assembled from contour lines derived from the DTM and the satellite mosaic.A lack of accurate topographic information in the eastern part of the island was *** topographic surveying or SAR interferometry should be used to improve the data quality in that *** GIS integrated database will be indispensable for glaciological and climatological studies and administrative and scientific *** future,the application of GIS techniques will be mandatory for environmental impact studies and environmental monitoring as well as for management plans on King George Island.

Currently a large effort is being done with the intention to educate people about how much energy each electrical appliance uses in their houses, since this knowledge is the fundamental basis of energy efficiency programs that can be managed by the household owners. This paper presents a simple yet functional non-intrusive method for electric power measurement that can be applied in energy efficiency programs, in order to provide a better knowledge of the energy consumption of the appliances in a home.
