Objectives: This study aimed at identifying distinct quitting trajectories over 29 days after an unassisted smoking ces- sation attempt by ecological momentary assessment (EMA). In order to validate these trajectories we tested if they predict smoking frequency up to six months later. Methods: EMA via mobile phones was used to collect real time data on smoking (yes/no) after an unassisted quit attempt over 29 days. Smoking frequency one, three and six months after the quit attempt was assessed with online questionnaires. Latent class growth modeling was used to analyze the data of 230 self-quitters. Results: Four different quitting trajectories emerged: quitter (43.9%), late quitter (11.3%), returner (17%) and persistent smoker (27.8%). The quitting trajectories predicted smoking frequency one, three and six months after the quit attempt (all p distinct trajectories instead of a binary variable for abstinence or relapse. In line with the relapse model by Marlatt and Gordon, late quitter may have learned how to cope with lapses during one month after the quitting attempt. This group would have been allocated to the relapse group in traditional outcome studies.

The purpose of this integrative review is to evaluate research pertaining to self-management programs for older adults with chronic diseases using Albert Bandura’s social Cognitive Theory (SCT) for behavior change. The focus is application of the SCT domains to self-management programs. The exploration of the current chronic disease self-management research provides an understanding of the social Cognitive Theory concepts studied in interventional self-management research. The integrative review explicated two areas related to the theory in need of further research. First, social support has not been thoroughly explored as a mechanism for enhancing self-management interventions. Second, moral disengagement was not identified as a focus within chronic disease research raising the question about the impact of moral disengagement on long-term adherence and behavior change.

Assessment of in Situ Anthelminthic Activity of Ethanolic Extract of Bidens pilosa against Adult’s Gastro-Intestinal Strongyle of Small Ruminants

Infections caused by gastrointestinal nematodes are major threats to livestock industry in the developing countries. They cause direct effects in form of loss in production and indirect economic losses due to high cost of anthelmintic drugs. Various alternative strategies are in practice to control parasitism which includes the usage of medicinal plants. This study evaluates the in situ anthelminthic activity of Bidens pilosa ethanolic extract on gastro-intestinal strongyles of small ruminants. Twenty (20) naturally infested goats of both sexes were distributed into 5 groups (n = 4) corresponding to groups receiving Tween 80 at 2.8%, Albendazole at 5 mg/kg and the three doses of extract (125, 250 and 500 mg/kg). The doses of extract and 2.8% Tween 80 were administered twice daily for 3 consecutive days while Albendazole was administered in a single dose. Faecal eggs count reduction, body weight, packed cell volume (PCV) and total worm count reduction were determined. Results showed that the ethanolic extract of B. pilosa was not effective against adult worms while Albendozole inflicted a 100% reduction of eggs count and total worm count of digestive strongyle. Body weight and PCV remain almost constant. This study indicates that ethanolic extract of B. pilosa at tested doses has no anthelminthic activity. However, further optimization and standardization of the ethanolic extract of B. pilosa could enhance its anthelminthic activity.

With the older adult population projected to increase substantially in the next 10 years, the incidence of chronic disease will become a significant factor in the burden of disease both globally and within the United States. The chronic disease state has been shown to decrease quality of life and the life expectancy of those individuals. In Tennessee the incidence of chronic disease, lower incomes, and education levels increases the risk of decreased quality of life and increased mortality in the older adult population. A review of literature by the researcher reveals that scant research has focused upon the older adult’s perspective toward chronic illness and making changes to their health routine. As part of a mixed-method correlational study, focus groups used a descriptive qualitative approach to increase understanding of the phenomenon of chronic illness. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the attitudes and perceptions of older adults in East Tennessee towards behavior change and health maintenance in chronic disease.

Background Transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） has become the standard treatment for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis （AS） considered at very high risk for surgical aortic valve replacement. The purpose of this sub-study was to evaluate long-term （〉 4 years） health-related quality of life （QoL） in octogenarians who underwent TAVI. Methods A single center observational registry in twenty patients who underwent frame analysis assessment ≥ 4 years after TAVI. Health-related QoL was evaluated, using the Short Form-36 （SF-36）, the EuroQoL-5D （EQ-5D） and the visual analogue score （EQ-VAS） questionnaires. Results The mean SF-36 subscale scores at follow-up were physical functioning 40.8 ± 26.3, role physical functioning 67.7 ± 34.9, vitality 54.6 ± 21.6, general health 52.1 ± 20.4, social functioning 63.8 ± 37.7, role emotional functioning 70.2 ± 36.0, mental health 73.2 ± 23.3 and bodily pain 80.9 ± 22.9. The mean EQ-VAS score 〉 4 years after TAVI was 64.7 ± 15.1. With respect to functional class, 80% of the patients were in NYHA class I/II at follow-up compared to 15% prior to TAVI. Conclusions This sub-study reports a significant improvement in functional class （NYHA） in a selected group of very elderly patients 〉 4 years after TAVI. Furthermore, all patients showed a satisfactory QoL despite their age and multiple comorbidities. In addition, our study reveals a lower QoL when compared with the general age matched Dutch population.

Objective:To evaluate the ovicidal and larvicidal activities of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of leaves of dichrocephala integrifolia(***)against the eggs(fresh and embryonnated),the first and second larval stages of Heligmosomoides *** order to verify if this medicinal plant possesses active compounds capable of inhibiting the embryonation and hatching of eggs or to induce the mortality of larvae(L1 and L2).Methods:Dried extracts were diluted in distilled water to obtain five different concentrations:625,1 250,2500,3750 and 5000μg/*** eggs obtained from artificially infected mice feces were exposed to these different concentrations for 48 *** of contact for embryonated eggs was 6 h while L1 and L2 larvae were exposed for 24 *** water(placebo)and 1.5%DMso were used as negative ***:distilled water,and1.5%DMso had no effect on embryonation,hatching and larval *** extracts of *** showed a weak activity against all stages of the parasite at all concentrations *** the contrary,the ethanolic extract of *** inhibited the embryonation of 87.5%of fresh eggs,the hatching of 81.1%of embryonated eggs and induced the mortality of 98.1%and 98%of L1 and L2 larvae respectively at 5000μg/***:The results of the present study indicate that the ethanolic extracts of *** contained compounds with ovicidal and larvicidal *** spite of these results,in vivo tests,studies on toxicity and mechanism of action of active compounds are also needed to validate the utilisation of this medicinal plant by population of Dschang-Cameroon to treat gastro-intestinal parasites.

探讨多发性骨髓瘤细胞系培养上清液对人骨髓来源内皮细胞系(HBMEC)的增殖、迁移及血管新生的作用。用含2％胎牛血清(FBS)的RPMI 1640培养液培养骨髓瘤细胞系获得上清液,将此培养液培养HBMEC,研究其时HBMEC的增殖及迁移的影响,并将此液放入含有携带HBMEC微珠的三维纤维蛋白中,研究其对血管新生的影响。结果表明,与含2％FBS的RPMI 1640培养液比较,骨髓瘤细胞系培养液对HBMEC的增殖有明显促进作用(P<0.001),并促进HBMEC的迁移,诱导毛细血管管腔的形成(长度及宽度)(P<0.001)。结论:骨髓瘤细胞系可能通过分泌某些细胞因子促进HBMEC增殖、迁移及血管新生。

Introduction: The congenital malformations of the ear are rare and often isolated, may be unilateral or bilateral, and can be associated with another syndromic malformation. Such malformations so not necessarily impact aesthetics and social relations. Case Presentation: The authors report the case of Samuel M, male born at 38 WA, who is the first child of healthy parents from the same socio-cultural area. His birth weight was 2800 g and he did not have any risk factors for deafness or concept of obstetrical trauma. He presented with congenital malformation manifesting as bilateral ear aplasia with unilateral facial paralysis. Computed tomography revealed abnormalities of the inner ear;functional explorations, such as PEA and OEA, showed findings in favor of bilateral cophosis. ASSR (Auditory Steady-State Responses) was not performed. The announcement of the serious diagnosis of deafness requires multidisciplinary care in order to plan a therapeutic program to limit the impact on the development of language, schooling, and consequently, the socio-professional future of children. Conclusion: This clinical case underlines the fact that interest of the clinical interview before possible multiple surgery does not always guarantee the satisfaction of the desire for repair in this type of patient.
