Artificial intelligence in general and software agents in particular are recognized as computer science disciplines that aim to model or simulate so-called intelligent human behaviors such as perception, decision-making, understanding, learning, etc. This work presents an approach to designing a generic Intelligent Agent that can be used in a multi-agent system to solve a complex problem. The generic agent that is proposed can be instantiated as a concrete agent, which is enabled with learning and autonomy capabilities by using Artificial Neural Networks. To highlight the generic aspect, the proposition is instantiated to be used in agriculture, health and education. The instantiated software agent applied in agriculture can process images in real time and detect defect on plants’ leaf. In the health field, the agent process image to diagnose breast cancer. When applied in Education, the agent can load an image of a student’s script and grade it. The performance of the designed agent system has the same accuracy as that of the respective neural networks used to instantiate them. In the educational field, the software agent has an accuracy of 98.9% and in the health field, it has an accuracy of 99.56% while in the agricultural field, it has an accuracy of 97.2%.

The present work deals with intelligent vehicle fleet maintenance and prediction. We propose an approach based primarily on the history of failures data and on the geographical data system. The objective here is to predict the date of failures for a fleet of vehicles in order to allow the maintenance department to efficiently deploy the proper resources;we further provide specific details regarding the origins of failures, and finally, give recommendations. This study used the Société de transport de Montréal (STM)’s historical bus failure data as well as weather data from Environment Canada. We thank Facebook’s Prophet, Simple Feed-forward, and Beats algorithms (Uber), we proposed a set of computer codes that allow us to identify the 20% of buses that are responsible for the 80% of failures by mean of the failure history. Then, we deepened our study on the unreliable equipments identified during the diffusion of our computer code This allowed us to propose probable predictions of the dates of future failures. To ensure the validity of the proposed algorithm, we carried out simulations with more than 250,000 data. The results obtained are similar to the predicted theoretical values.

Background: Tropical forests play a fundamental role in the provision of diverse ecosystem services, such as biodiversity,climate and air quality regulation, freshwater provision, carbon cycling, agricultural support and culture. To understand the role of forests in the carbon balance, aboveground biomass(AGB) estimates are needed. Given the importance of Brazilian tropical forests, there is an urgent need to improve AGB estimates to support the Brazilian commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC). Many AGB maps and datasets exist, varying in availability, scale and coverage. Thus, stakeholders, policy makers and scientists must decide which AGB product, dataset or combination of data to use for their particular goals. In this study, we assessed the gaps in the spatial AGB data across the Brazilian Amazon forests not only to orient the decision makers about the data that are currently available but also to provide a guide for future ***: We obtained a map of the gaps in the forest AGB spatial data for the Brazilian Amazon using statistics and differences between AGB maps and a spatial multicriteria evaluation that considered the current AGB datasets. The AGB spatial data gap map represents areas with good coverage of AGB data and, consequently, the main gaps or priority areas where further biomass assessments should focus, including the northeast of Amazon State, Amapá and northeast of Pará. Background The value of intravascular ultrasound （IVUS） imaging in patients with replacement of the ascending aorta for acute type A aortic dissection （AD） is unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential use of IVUS imaging in this setting. Methods From September 2002 to July 2005, IVUS imaging with a 9 MHz probe was performed in a series of 16 consecutive patients with suspected or established AD. This study focused on 5 of them with replacement of the ascending aorta for acute type A AD. Among these 5 patients, other imaging modalities including aortography, spiral computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and transesophageal echocardiography were performed in 5, 3, 3 and 1 patients, respectively. Results There were no complications related to IVUS imaging. For the replaced graft, as other imaging modalities, IVUS could identify all 5 grafts, the proximal and the distal anastomoses, and the ostia of the reimplanted coronary arteries. In 2 cases, IVUS detected 2 peri-graft pseudo-aneurysms （1 per case）, which were also detected by magnetic resonance imaging but omitted by aortography. For the residual dissection, IVUS had similar findings as other imaging modalities in detecting the patency （5/5）, the longitudinal and the circumferential extent, the thrombus （4/5）, the recurrent dissection （1/5） and an aneurysm distal to the graft （5 in 4 patients）. However, it detected more intimal tears and side branch involvements than other imaging modalities （15 vs 10 and 3 vs 1, respectively）. Conclusions In following-up patients with replacement of the ascending aorta for acute type A AD, IVUS imaging can provide complete information of the replaced graft and the residual dissection. So, IVUS imaging may be considered when the four current frequently used imaging modalities can not supply sufficient information or there are some discrepancies between them.

Effects of Conjugated Systems on UV-Visible Light-sensitive D-π-A Type Sulfonium Salt Photoacid Generators

A series of D-π-A type sulfonium salt photoacid generators with different π-conjugated structures, such as triphenyl, phenylstilbene, styryl-biphenyl, and stilbene, were designed to determine the effect of molecular structures on the photochemical and photophysical properties. The mechanisms of photochemical generation of H＋ were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and fluorescence spectroscopy. It is found that the frontier orbits determine the absorption, the molar extinction coefficients, and the quantum yields of photoacid generation. Triphenyl systems connected with sulfonium are beneficial to increase the quantum yields of acid generation. The photoreactivity of four sulfonium salts was further evaluated through the polymerizations of various epoxide monomers at different irradiation wavelengths （365- 425 nm） by using the real-time infrared spectroscopy with light-emitting diodes. The high quantum yields for acid generation （ФH＋ = -0.32 to 0.58） and the high molar extinction coefficients （ε = -23500 ***-1 to 31000 ***-1） of the sulfonium salts lead to high conversion rates （over 50%-80%）. Hence, these photoinitiators exhibit potential for the photocuring applications.

Comparative Genomic Study of the Thioredoxin Family in Photosynthetic Organisms with Emphasis on Populus trichocarpa

The recent genome sequencing of Populus trichocarpa and Vitis vinifera, two models of woody plants, of Sorghum bicolor, a model of monocot using C4 metabolism, and of the moss Physcomitrella patens, together with the availability of photosynthetic organism genomes allows performance of a comparative genomic study with organisms having different ways of life, reproduction modes, biological traits, and physiologies. Thioredoxins （Trxs） are small ubiq- uitous proteins involved in the reduction of disulfide bridges in a variety of target enzymes present in all sub-cellular compartments and involved in many biochemical reactions. The genes coding for these enzymes have been identified in these newly sequenced genomes and annotated. The gene content, organization and distribution were compared to other photosynthetic organisms, leading to a refined classification. This analysis revealed that higher plants and bryo- phytes have a more complex family compared to algae and cyanobacteria and to non-photosynthetic organisms, since poplar exhibits 49 genes coding for typical and atypical thioredoxins and thioredoxin reductases, namely one-third more than monocots such as Oryza sativa and S. bicolor. The higher number of Trxs in poplar is partially explained by gene duplication in the Trx m, h, and nucleoredoxin classes. Particular attention was paid to poplar genes with emphasis on Trx-like classes called Clot, thioredoxin-like, thioredoxins of the lilium type and nucleoredoxins, which were not described in depth in previous genomic studies.

Case studies of earthquake-induced effects on concrete channels

Case studies are presented for two concrete lined channels shaken by strong ground motions during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the high speed channel （HSC） and bypass channel （BC）, on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power＇s Van Norman Complex. Performances of these two channels as they pass through different subsurface materials identify several important seismic aspects and the critical role of geotechnical earthquake engineering in assessing channel behaviors. Preliminary evaluations using detailed mapping of channel cracks, permanent ground movements, subsurface profiles, and nearby strong ground motion recordings from the 1994 earthquake show that the channel liners may have been damaged from both transient motions and permanent ground movements. Damage from permanent ground deformations is obvious by observation; therefore simplified analyses are presented only for transient movements. Site specific transient response analyses are performed to provide an initial assessment of the differing effects from transient and permanent ground movements on HSC and BC liner damage. These case studies are helpful for introducing the potential for lifeline damage from transient movements within zones of permanent ground movement, a concept not well understood in the earthquake engineering community
