BACKGROUND Secondary forms and hypertension-mediated organ damage(HMOD) may differ between younger and older hypertensive *** aim of the present study was to explore the specificity of HMOD and secondary forms in patients≥ 65 years in comparison to younger ones in a contemporary *** We analysed 938 patients recruited between 2004 and 2014(Cardiology department,Croix-Rousse Hospital,Lyon)who had at baseline HMOD and secondary forms screening among them 190 were≥ 65 *** The mean(2.1±0.8 vs.1.2±0.9,P 10 m/s was the most frequent HMOD in patients≥ 65 years(90.1%),while echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy was the most common in the younger patients(45.0%).Among ECG left ventricular indexes,only R wave in aVL lead was significantly more frequently observed in patients≥ 65 years(32.6%) than in younger ones(19.0%,P <0.001).The frequency of secondary hypertension was not significantly different between younger and older patients(respectively;30.5% vs.27.8%,P=0.487).The most frequent aetiology was primary aldosteronism regardless of age,followed by renovascular hypertension(6.3% vs.3.3%,P=0.038).Among older patients,3.2% were treated with adrenalectomy and 6.3% with percutaneous transluminal renal *** Extensive screening of HMOD in older patients may be questionable as nearly all patients had one;aetiology must however be explored as a third of older patients had a secondary form.

Objective: COVID-19 surveillance was established as early as March 2020 in the Central African Republic (CAR), after the WHO statement relating to the identification of several cases outside China. However, given the non-performing molecular biology technical platform in many developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the second wave promised to be surprising and formidable. In this context, a mass survey was launched in Bangui to determine the prevalence of COVID-19. Patients and Methods: From March 18 to April 2, 2021, a mass screening campaign took place in tourist places, companies and the main hospital infrastructures. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from participants with and without symptoms of Influenza-like illness (ILI) and stored in VTM tubes. The Ag (COVID-19) and RT-PCR tests were carried out in Bangui at the LNBCSP. The sequencing of RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 positives was carried out at the INRB. Results: We included 1480 participants of whom 33 (2.23%) were SARS-COV-2 positive, of whom 24 were male and 9 female. This sex difference was statistically significant (p = 0.012) as the sex ratio M/F was 1.09. Sampling sites located in the 1st arrondissement were the most prolific (p = 0.006) and were sequenced. In addition to the analysis of the 33 samples from the predefined sites under study, 17 control sequences from the provinces generated during the same period are added. We detected 2 Variants Of Concern (VOC) including the predominant B.1.620 (43.86%) followed by B.1.1.7 or Alpha (5.10%). Conclusion: The study showed the importance of surveillance and the availability of means of diagnosis of COVID-19. The identified risk factors were sex and sampling site. This study has shown the importance of setting up sentinel sites for COVID-19 surveillance in all regions of the country and the appropriate use of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine.

Enhancing laccase stability and activity for dyes decolorization using ZIF-8@MWCNT nanocomposite

The continuous use of chemical dyes in various industries,and their discharge into industrial effluents,results in severe problems to human life and water *** have the ability to decolorize dyes and toxic chemicals in industrial effluents as green *** possible industrial applications have been limited by poor reusability,low stability,and loss of free laccase *** this research,lac-case was immobilized on zeolitic imidazolate framework coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes(Laccase@ZIF-8@MWCNTs)via metal affinity adsorption to develop an easy separable and stable *** optimum reaction conditions for immobilized laccase are at a pH of 3.0 and a temperature of 60℃.The immobilized laccase was enhanced in storage and thermal *** results indicated that Laccase@ZIF-8@MWCNTs still maintained 68%of its original activity after 10 times of repeated *** importantly,the biocatalytic system was applied for decolorization of different dyes(20 mg·L^(-1))without a mediator,and up to 97.4%for Eriochrome black T and 95.6%Acid red 88 was achieved in 25 *** with these properties may be used in a variety of environmental and industrial applications.

Peanut is a worldwide oilseed crop and the need to assess germplasm in a non-destructive manner is important for seed nutritional *** this study,Near Infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS)was applied to rapidly assess germplasm variability from whole seed of 699 samples,field-collected and assembled in four genetic and environmentbased sets:one set of 300 varieties of a core-collection and three sets of 133 genotypes of an interspecific population,evaluated in three environments in a large spatial scale of two countries,Mbalmayo and Bafia in Cameroon and Nioro in Senegal,under rainfed *** elemental spectra were gathered on six subsets of seeds of each sample,after three rotation scans,with a spectral resolution of 16 cm-1over the spectral range of867 nm to 2530 *** were then processed by principal component analysis(PCA)coupled with Partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA).As results,a huge variability was found between varieties and genotypes for all NIR wavelength within and between *** magnitude of genetic variation was particularly observed at 11 relevant wavelengths such as 1723 nm,usually related to oil content and fatty acid *** yielded the most chemical attributes in three significant PCs(i.e.,eigenvalues>10),which together captured 93%of the total variation,revealing genetic and environment structure of varieties and genotypes into four clusters,corresponding to the four samples *** pattern of genetic variability of the interspecific population covers,remarkably half of spectrum of the core-collection,turning out to be the ***,a PLS-DA model was developed and a strong accuracy of 99.6%was achieved for the four sets,aiming to classify each seed sample according to environment *** confusion matrix achieved for the two sets of Bafia and Nioro showed 100%of instances classified correctly with 100%at both sensitivity and specificity,confirming that their seed quality was different f

Soil and vegetation water content identify the main terrestrial ecosystem changes

Environmental change is a consequence of many interrelated *** vegetation responds to natural and human activity still needs to be well establishe d,quantified and *** cent satellite missions providing hydrologic and ecological indicators enable better monitoring of Earth system changes,yet there is no automatic way to address this issue directly from ***,we develop an observation-based methodology to capture evidence of changes in global terrestrial ecosystems and attribute these changes to natural or anthropogenic *** use the longest time record of global microwave L-band soil moisture and vegetation optical depth as satellite data and build spatially explicit maps of change in soil and vegetation water content and biomass reflecting large ecosystem changes during the last decade,*** of prominent trends(from-8% to 9% per year) are observed,especially in humid and semi-arid *** further combine such trends with land cover change maps,vegetation greenness and precipitation variability to assess their relationship with major documented ecosystem *** regions emerge from our *** cluster changes according to human activity drivers,including deforestation(Amazon,Central Africa) and wildfires(East Australia),artificial reforestation(South-East China),abandonment of farm fields(Central Russia) and climate shifts related to changes in precipitation variability(East Africa,North America and Central Argentina).Using the high sensitivity of soil and vegetation water content to ecosystem changes,microwave satellite observations enable us to quantify and attribute global vegetation responses to climate or anthropogenic activities as a direct measure of environmental changes and the mechanisms driving them.

Laser-induced thermocapillary deformation of liquid surfaces has emerged as a promising tool to precisely characterize the thermophysical properties of pure ***,challenges arise for nanofluid(NF)and soft biofluid systems where the direct interaction of the laser generates an intriguing interplay between heating,momentum,and scattering forces which can even damage soft ***,we report a versatile,pump-probe-based,rapid,and non-contact interferometric technique that resolves interface dynamics of complex fluids with the precision of~1 nm in thick-film and 150 pm in thin-film regimes below the thermal limit without the use of lock-in or modulated *** characterize the thermophysical properties of complex NF in three exclusively different types of ***,when the NF is heated from the bottom through an opaque substrate,we demonstrate that our methodology permits the measurement of thermophysical properties(viscosity,surface tension,and diffusivity)of complex NF and ***,in a top illumination configuration,we show a precise characterization of NF by quantitively isolating the competing forces,taking advantage of the different time scales of these ***,we show the measurement of NF confined in a metal cavity,in which the transient thermoelastic deformation of the metal surface provides the properties of the NF as well as thermo-mechanical properties of the *** results reveal how the dissipative nature of the heatwave allows us to investigate thick-film dynamics in the thin-film regime,thereby suggesting a general approach for precision measurements of complex NFs,biofluids,and optofluidic devices.

Landscape effects on the thermotolerance of carabid beetles and the role of behavioral thermoregulation

Physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation are central to seasonal cold adaptation in ectothermic *** species with enhanced mobility,behavioral responses may be of greater importance in the cold stress *** the carabid beetles as a study organism,the current study compared physiological thermotolerance and behavioral thermoregulation in carabid species inhabiting cereal fields in different landscape contexts,from fine grain heterogeneous“complex”landscapes to homogenous“simple”*** thermotolerance was determined via measurement of the CTmin and chill coma *** responses to cold temperature exposure were determined employing a purpose built arena,and thoracic temperature measured to estimate the efficacy of the behavior as a form of behavioral *** revealed an influence of landscape composition on the cold tolerance of carabid beetles,although species differed in their sensitivity to landscape intensification.A reduced effect of landscape on the thermotolerance of larger carabid beetles was observed,thought to be the consequence of greater mobility preventing local acclimation to microclimatic variation along the landscape intensification *** into behavioral thermoregulation of the 3 largest species revealed burrowing behavior to be the main behavioral response to cold stress,acting to significantly raise carabid body *** finding highlights the importance of behavioral thermoregulation as a strategy to evade cold *** use of behavioral thermoregulation may negate the need to invest in physiological thermotolerance,further offering explanation for the lack of landscape effect on the physiological thermotolerance of larger carabids.

Two-dimensional(2D)ferromagnetic materials are considered as promising candidates for the future generations of spintronic ***,2D materials with intrinsic ferromagnetism are ***,high-throughput first-principles simulations are performed to screen 2D materials that present a non-magnetic to a ferromagnetic transition upon hole doping.A global evolutionary search is subsequently performed to identify alternative possible atomic structures of the eligible candidates,and 122 materials exhibiting a hole-doping induced ferromagnetism are *** energetic and dynamic stability,as well as magnetic properties under hole doping are investigated *** of these 2D materials are metal halides,followed by chalcogenides,oxides,and nitrides,some of them having predicted Curie temperatures above 300 *** exchange interactions responsible for the ferromagnetic order are also *** work not only provides theoretical insights into hole-doped 2D ferromagnetic materials,but also enriches the family of 2D magnetic materials for possible spintronic applications.

Dear Editor,Abnormal DNA methylation,a process whereby tumor suppressors tend to be hypermethylated and silenced,is a hallmark of cancer cells[1].Removing the methylation by demethylation agents such as azacitidine and decitabine is one of the strategies to treat cancers and has been successfully used to treat certain hematological and solid tumors[2].However,there are no established DNA methylation markers or signatures that can accurately predict patients’response to treatment[2];thus,the identification of reliable predictive biomarkers for effective therapy remains a critical need in clinical practice.

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and COVID-19-related respiratory failure

Although standard oxygen face masks are first-line therapy for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure,high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy has gained major popularity in intensive care *** physiological effects of high-flow oxygen counterbalance the physiological consequences of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure by lessening the deleterious effects of intense and prolonged inspiratory efforts generated by *** simplicity of application for physicians and nurses and its comfort for patients are other arguments for its use in this *** clinical studies have reported a decreased risk of intubation with high-flow oxygen compared with standard oxygen,its survival benefit is uncertain.A more precise definition of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure,including a classification of severity based on oxygenation levels,is needed to better compare the efficiencies of different non-invasive oxygenation support methods(standard oxygen,high-flow oxygen,and non-invasive ventilation).Additionally,the respective role of each non-invasive oxygenation support method needs to be established through further clinical trials in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure,especially in severe forms.
