Digital Transformation of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Production Manufacturing

Industry 4.0 concepts have brought about a wind of renewal in the organization of companies and their production methods. However, this integration is subject to obstacles when it comes to Small and Medium sized Enterprises—SMEs: the costs of new technologies to be acquired, the level of maturity of the company regarding its level of digitization and automation, human aspects such as training employees to master new technologies, reluctance to change, etc. This article provides a new framework and presents an intelligent support system to facilitate the digital transformation of SMEs. The digitalization is realized through physical, informational, and decisional points of view. To achieve the complete transformation of the company, the framework combines the triptych of performance criteria (cost, quality, time) with the notions of sustainability (with respect to social, societal, and environmental aspects) and digitization through tools to be integrated into the company’s processes. The new framework encompasses the formalisms developed in the literature on Industry 4.0 concepts, information systems and organizational methods as well as a global structure to support and assist operators in managing their operations. In the form of a web application, it will exploit reliable data obtained through information systems such as Enterprise Resources Planning—ERP, Manufacturing Execution System—MES, or Warehouse Management System—WMS and new technologies such as artificial intelligence (deep learning, multi-agent systems, expert systems), big data, Internet of things (IoT) that communicate with each other to assist operators during production processes. To illustrate and validate the concepts and developed tools, use cases of an electronic manufacturing SME have been solved with these concepts and tools, in order to succeed in this company’s digital transformation. Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase （CAD） is a key enzyme involved in the last step of monolignol biosynthesis. The effect of CAD down-regulation on lignin production was investigated through a transgenic approach in maize. Trans- genic CAD-RNAi plants show a different degree of enzymatic reduction depending on the analyzed tissue and show alter- ations in cell wall composition. Cell walls of CAD-RNAi stems contain a lignin polymer with a slight reduction in the S-to-G ratio without affecting the total lignin content. In addition, these cell walls accumulate higher levels of cellulose and ara- binoxylans. In contrast, cell walls of CAD-RNAi midribs present a reduction in the total lignin content and of cell wall polysaccharides. In vitro degradability assays showed that, although to a different extent, the changes induced by the repression of CAD activity produced midribs and stems more degradable than wild-type plants. CAD-RNAi plants grown in the field presented a wild-type phenotype and produced higher amounts of dry biomass. Cellulosic bioethanol assays revealed that CAD-RNAi biomass produced higher levels of ethanol compared to wild-type, making CAD a good target to improve both the nutritional and energetic values of maize lignocellulosic biomass.

Honeydew volatile emission acts as a kairomonal message for the Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis （Coleoptera： Coccinellidae）

The Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis Pallas is considered as an invasive species in most territories where it has been introduced. Because aphid honeydew acts as an attraetant for many aphid predators and parasitoids, the objectives of this work were to collect and identify the volatile compounds released from the aphid excretory product to evaluate how these semiochemicals could affect the H. axyridis foraging behavior. Twelve volatile chemicals were identified from the Megoura viciae Buckton honeydew including four alcohols, three ketones, three aldehydes, a pyrazine and a monoterpene. The volatiles 3-methyl-l-butanol and 3-methyl-butanal were highlighted as the two most abundant semiochemicals released from the M. viciae honeydew. Vieia faba L. plants treated with crude honeydew attracted more than 80% of the tested individuals with 40% of attracted beetles located on the plant. Four volatile compounds （3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 3-methyl-butanal, 3-methyl-1-butanol and limonene） were also highlighted to attract more than 75% of the coccinellids toward the odor source and to locate about 35% of them on the plants. Limonene was the most efficient attractant since 89% of the H. axyridis responded to this odor. The use of the identified semiochemicals as well as the composition of an artificial honeydew could certainly be helpful to control the dispersal of the Asian lady beetle H. axyridis.

Comparison of airway resistance measurements by the forced oscillation technique and the interrupter technique for detecting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in elderly patients

Rulmonary function tests provide an objective means to verify ventilatory dysfunction and to estimate its severity in respiratory disorders. Measurement of forced expiratory volume in 1 second （FEV1） and forced vital capacity （FVC） is considered to be the basic tests for the assessment of airway obstruction. Although they are useful diagnostically and prognostically, the results of FEV1 and FVC are strongly dependent on the cooperation of the patient. Lack of collaboration is particularly present in elderly patients because of mood alterations, fatigability or cognitive impairment. The forced oscillation technique （FOT） and the interrupter resistance technique are the two methods of measuring respiratory resistance during tidal breathing, they are of special interest because both of them are noninvasive, requires minimal cooperation, takes little time and can be easily repeated, especially in children and elderly subjects who cannot accomplish forced expiratory maneuvers in a reproducible manner.

Antioxidant Activity of the Natural Flavonoid 7-Hydroxy-5,6,4’-trimethoxyflavone Isolated from the Leaves of Lippia rugosa A. Chev

Phytochemical studies and antioxidant activities were carried out on n-hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol extracts of the leaves of Lippia rugosa A. Chev (Verbenaceae), a medicinal plant used traditionally in the Cameroonian savannah’s region to protect foodstuffs and to cure degenerative diseases. Results indicated that theses extracts contain terpenoids, phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Except the n-hexane extract, all of the obtained extracts exhibit antioxidant activities with the ethanol extract being the most effective with an inhibition percentage of 85.668% ± 1.233% and an inhibition concentration (IC50) of 58 μg/ml (R2 = 0.987, P 50) of 221 μg/ml (R2 = 0.966, P < 0.01). This is the first time that 7-hydroxy-5,6,4'-trimethoxyflavone is being isolated from L. rugosa and its antioxidant activity evaluated.
