Infant’s Sigh Breathing Matters—The Role of the Hering-Breuer Deflation Reflex in Bronchial Decongestion

Background: The prolonged slow expiratory (PSE) technique can induce sigh breaths related to the Hering-Breuer reflex in *** is a specific chest physiotherapy technique often used in children to help with the clearance of secretions, reduce pulmonary obstruction and decrease ventilatory effort. Purpose: The main objective of this review was to synthesize and clarify the existing knowledge of the physiological mechanism behind the Hering-Breuer reflex and its utility in the PSE technique. The secondary objective was to provide an overview of PSE which is probably the main mechanical feature for mucus clearance in infants and to identify gaps and any further research required. Method: A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE and Ovid EMBASE, from 1968 to January 2024, using search terms relating to “Interaction of Hering-Breuer reflex and chest physiotherapy therapy, sigh breath in infants and prolonged slow expiration technique” to create an overview of the advances and gaps in current knowledge of PSE. Result: The data obtained following treatment with PSE maneuvers in infants with histories of recurrent wheezing shows that the presence of sighs could be the main active principle of treatment. Conclusion: Changes in volume induced by PSE technique and, effects from crying may stimulate the Hering-Breuer deflation reflex and sighs in turn improving alveolar ventilation as well as lung volume in infants.

Iron in the NEEM ice core relative to Asian loess records over the last glacial–interglacial cycle

Mineral dust can indirectly affect the climate by supplying bioavailable iron(Fe) to the ocean. Here, we present the records of dissolved Fe(DFe) and total Fe(TDFe) in North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling(NEEM) ice core over the past 110 kyr BP. The Fe records are significantly negatively correlated with the carbon-dioxide(CO2) concentrations during cold periods. The results suggest that the changes in Fe fluxes over the past 110 kyr BP in the NEEM ice core are consistent with those in Chinese loess records because the mineral-dust distribution is controlled by the East Asian deserts. Furthermore, the variations in the dust input on a global scale are most likely driven by changes in solar radiation during the last glacial–interglacial cycle in response to Earth’s orbital cycles. In the last glacial–interglacial cycle, the DFe/TDFe ratios were higher during the warm periods(following the post-Industrial Revolution and during the Holocene and last interglacial period) than during the main cold period(i.e. the last glacial maximum(LGM)), indicating that the aeolian input of iron and the iron fertilization effect on the oceans have a non-linear relationship during different periods. Although the burning of biomass aerosols has released large amounts of DFe since the Industrial Revolution, no significant responses are observed in the DFe and TDFe variations during this period, indicating that severe anthropogenic contamination has no significant effect on the DFe(TDFe)release in the NEEM ice core.

On the MOSFET-Based Temperature Sensitive Element for Bolometer Application

This paper focuses on the study of thermal performances of MOS （metal-oxide-semiconductor） transistors for uncooled infrared bolometer applications. Such devices can be used in various applications both military and civil, such as defence and security, medical applications, industrial surveillance, etc. Series of measurements were conducted to obtain TCC （temperature coefficient of current） versus gate voltage and temperature curves. The TCC is a figure of merit for a device used as the sensitive element in a bolometer that represents its sensitivity to temperature and as such is a good indicator of the detector attainable performance. The measurements were confronted to Atlas simulations, and showed that in the subthreshold region the TCC ranges from 4%/K all the way to 9%/K which represents a great improvement compared to state of the art thermistor bolometers. Analytic expressions of the TCC are also derived from current equations of the MOSFET （MOS field effect transistor） drain current to help understanding the effect of drain to source voltage, mobility, temperature and threshold voltage sensibility to temperature, in all three operation modes of the transistor （subthreshold, ohmic and saturation）. It was also determined that gate length does not have an influence on the TCC until short channel effects are factored in.

采用X射线反射法(X-ray reflectometry)测定了十二烷基(6)聚氧乙烯醚(C_(12)E_6)分子所形成的自由站立式(free-standing)泡沫双层的结构参数。结果表明:此双层膜中的疏水碳氢链区、极性头区和表面活性剂分子单层之间3个区域的厚度分别为0.90,1.35和1.31nm;电子密度分别为2.4×10^(-3),2.6×10^(-3)和2.3×10^(-3)电子数/nm^3;区域之间的界面粗糙度为0.34nm。泡沫双层中两极性头区之间不含自由水,而且其厚度在红外光线的照射下可变薄0.40nm;这可能是由于结构水被破坏所致。

Assessment of Sediment and Pollutants in Buyo Lake, Ivory Coast, Using SWAT （Soil and Water Assessment Tool） Model

The changes in land use in the last 30 years in the territory of agro-forest watershed of Lake Buyo resulted in significant sediment into the lake. Sediments are a preferred means of transportation for certain pollutants, like phosphorus in excess. By mapping the source areas of erosion, the authors can determine the risk areas and help to prioritize interventions in the territory. This mapping is done using the SWAT （soil and water assessment tool） model. Several types of data, including topography, land use, soil and climate data are needed to run the model. In this paper, all different steps are presented, from the designing of HRU （hydrological response units）, basic units to run the SWAT model until the simulations. The establishment of HRU has three main stages： space discretization, land use and soil data integration and HRU distribution：（1） space discretization which consist in extracting the limits and the water network of the watershed from the DEM （digital elevation model） and in subdividing them into sub-basins; （2） land use and soil data integration： it consists in digitizing the physical maps of land use and of soils under Mapinfo 7.5 and in keeping them in ＂shape＂ format; （3） HRU distribution： it leads to subdivide the sub-watersheds in small units that combine a single soil type and one type of land use. It appears from this study to obtain 23 sub-watersheds and 71 HRU. Once the HRU designed, it is necessary to integrate climate data, data on physico-chemical characteristics of soils and agricultural practices, before starting the simulations. This will allow the model to assess the risk of sedimentation and eutrophication of the lake using the MUSLE （modified universal soil loss equation） and phosphorus cycle.
