Mangrove Forest Characterization in Southeast Côte d’Ivoire

Mangrove ecosystems are faced with far more existential threats of erosion than their terrestrial counterparts. Consequences of their degradation vary from decline in edible aquatic stocks, coastal erosion and aquatic weeds invasion. Mangrove forest dynamics was assessed from multi-temporal analyses of remotely sensed satellite images (mosaics of 1989/90 and 2014/15) within 233,900 hectares. Ground-truthing was accompanied by field measurements in selected forest stands to characterize structure, estimate biomass and carbon pools. With conservation as overriding goal, a socio-economic survey was conducted to underpin the factors influencing mangrove forests over-exploitation and qualitatively assess the sensitivity of the locals to resources decline. The region recorded fifty percent loss of mangrove area during the 25-year period. Low leaf area index (1.02 - 2.52 m2·m-2) confirms canopy openness. Above-ground root biomass (kg per root) ranged between 110.67 and 382.64. The roots demonstrate capacity to fix up to 176 Mg C ha-1 with average carbon content of 46 percent. Highest carbon pools were in the Eloka-To forest stands, in near natural conditions. Despite harsh environmental conditions, potential for natural regeneration was evidenced by seedlings density (individuals per m2) up to 76. Pilot survey revealed high dependence on mangrove resources for direct income (70 percent) and daily energy needs (60 percent). Despite the heightened awareness of the impending dangers posed by mangrove deforestation and willingness to conserve, riverine communities are incapacitated by lack of viable economic alternatives. External interventions are therefore imperative to achieve conservation goals with long-term implications for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

*** epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome are rare,life-threatening, drug-induced cutaneous *** conducted a case-control study to quantify the risks associated with the use of specific drugs. *** were obtained through surveillance networks in France,Germany,Italy,and *** use before the onset of disease was compared in 245 people who were hospitalized because of toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome and 1147 patients hospitalized for other reasons(controls).Crude relative risks were calculated and adjusted for confounding by multivariate methods when numbers were large enough. *** drugs usually used for short periods, the risks were increased for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and other sulfonamide antibiotics(crude relative risk,172;95 percent confidence interval,75 to 396), chlormezanone(crude relative risk,62;21 to 188),aminopenicillins (multivariate relative risk,6.7;2.5 to 18), quinolones(multivariate relative risk,10;2.6 to 38),and cephalosporins(multivariate relative risk,14;3.2 to 59). For acetaminophen,the multivariate relative risk was 0.6 (95 percent confidence interval,0.2 to 1.3) in France but 9.3(3.9 to 22) in the other *** drugs usually used for months or years,the increased risk was confined largely to the first two months of treatment, when crude relative risks were as follows:carbamazepine, 90(95 percent confidence interval,19 to∞);phenobarbital, 45(19 to 108);phenytoin,53(11 to∞);valproic acid,25(4.3 to∞);oxicam nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs),72(25 to 209);allopurinol,52(16 to 167);and corticosteroids,54(23 to 124).For many drugs,including thiazide diuretics and oral hypoglycemic agents,there was no significant increase in risk. *** use of antibacterial sulfonamides, anticonvulsant agents,oxicam NSAIDs,allopurinol,chlormezanone, and corticosteroids is associated with large increases in the risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epi

Congenital uro or genito-digestive fistulas are frequently found in the context of caudal pole malformations. Isolated congenital forms without associated anorectal malformation have not been reported until now. We report the first case we know a 9 year old female child received in a pediatric surgery consultation for fecaluria evolving since birth with a permeable anus. She presented a good general condition, a good staturo-ponderal and psychomotor development, a vulva soiled by stool and a permeable anus with a tonic sphincter. A retrograde urethrocystography revealed a caeco-vesical fistula. Surgery consisted of ligation-section of the caeco-vesical septum. A follow-up urethrocystography at three months post-surgery no longer visualized the fistula. Our post-operative follow-up is 4 years. Isolated congenital caeco-vesical fistula is an unknown pathology whose late diagnosis can have serious repercussions.

Objective: To determine the early electrocardiographic changes in a cohort of ambulatory cameroonian COVID-19 patients treated with hydroxychlo- roquine and Azithromycin. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Treatment centres of the city of Yaounde, Cameroon, from May 7th to 24th 2020. Participants: We enrolled 51 consecutive confirmed COVID-19 on RT-PCR who having mild forms of COVID-19 and treated by hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice daily during seven #days plus Azithromycin 500 mg the first day and 250 mg the remaining 4 days as per national standard. Main Outcomes Measures: The primary end-point was the change in QTc interval between day 0 (D0), day 3 (D3) and day 7 (D7). Secondary endpoints were changes in all other cardiac electrical conductivity patterns and the occurrence of clinical arrhythmic events during the course of treatment. Mapping of Potential Recharge Areas of Fractured Aquifers in the Departments of Yamoussoukro and Toumodi (Central Côte d’Ivoire)

Groundwater is an important natural resource for all human activity. Today, due to climate change and population growth, the demand has increased considerably, thus requiring their evaluation to ensure sustainability. However, one of the important but difficult to estimate parameters due to its variability is the recharge. This work aims to map the potential recharge of aquifers in the departments of Yamoussoukro and Toumodi. Saaty’s AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) multi-criteria analysis technique was used by integrating different thematic layers. First, a reclassification then weighting of these parameters was made according to their influence in the recharge process. Finally, they were integrated into a GIS to produce the map of potential groundwater recharge zones. The results indicate that the potential high recharge areas represent approximately 43.11% of the area of the study area. These areas appear scattered in the sub-prefecture of Yamoussoukro, Kokoumbo Attiegouakro, Toumodi et Kpouèbo.
