Indeterminate pulmonary nodules in colorectal cancer

AIM:To investigate the clinicopathologic parameters of pulmonary metastasis in colorectal cancer(CRC) patients after lung operation of indeterminate pulmonary nodules(IPNs).METHODS:From a prospective database of CRCpatients,40 cases that underwent lung operation between November 2008 and December 2012 for suspicious metastatic pulmonary nodules on chest computed tomography(CT)were *** decision to perform a lung operation was made if the patient met the following criteria:(1)completely resected or resectable primary CRC;(2)completely resectable IPNs;(3)controlled or controllable extrapulmonary metastasis;and(4)adequate general condition and pulmonary function to tolerate pulmonary *** operation was performed by a thoracic surgeon without CT-guided biopsy for pathologic ***:A total of 40 cases of lung resection was performed in 29 *** patients underwent repeated lung *** final pathology result showed metastasis from the CRC in 30 cases(75%)and benign pathology in 10 cases(25%).The primary tumor site was the rectum in 26/30(86.6%)cases with pulmonary metastasis,but only 3/10(30%)cases in the benign group had a primary rectal cancer(P=0.001).Positron emission tomography(PET)-CT was performed for 22/30(73.4%)patients in the lung metastasis group and for 6/10(60.0%)patients in the benign ***-CT revealed hot uptake of18fluorine 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose with all IPNs in both *** group with pulmonary metastasis had a higher incidence of primary rectal cancer(P=0.001),a more advanced tumor stage(P=0.011),and more frequent lymphatic invasion of tumor cells(P=0.005).Six cases with previous liver metastasectomy were present in the lung metastasis *** carcinoembryonic antigen levels before lung operation were not elevated in any of the ***:The stage and location of the primary tumor and tumor cell infiltration of lymphatics provide useful indicators for deciding on lung resection of IP

Adaptive Electrospinning System Based on Reinforcement Learning for Uniform‑Thickness Nanofiber Air Filters

Electrospinning is a simple and versatile method to produce nanofiber ***,owing to bending instability that occurs during the electrospinning process,electrospinning has frequently produced a non-uniform-thickness nanofiber filter,which deteriorates its air ***,an adaptive electrospinning system based on reinforcement learning(E-RL)was developed to produce uniform-thickness nanofiber *** E-RL accomplished a real-time thickness measurement of an electrospun nanofiber filter by measuring the transmitted light through the nanofiber filter using a camera placed at the bottom of the collector and converting it into thickness using the Beer–Lambert *** on the measured thickness,the E-RL detected the non-uniformity of the nanofiber filter thickness and manipulated the movable collector to alleviate the non-uniformity of the thickness by a pre-trained reinforcement learning(RL)*** the training of the RL algo-rithm,the nanofiber production simulation software based on the empirical model of the deposition of the nanofiber filter was developed,and the training process of the RL algorithm was repeated until the optimal policy was *** the training process with the simulation software,the trained model was transferred to the adaptive electrospinning *** the movement of the collector under the optimal strategy of RL algorithm,the non-uniformity of such nanofiber filters was significantly reduced by approximately five times in standard deviation and error for both simulation and *** finding has great potential in improving the reliability of electrospinning process and nanofiber filters used in research and industrial fields such as environment,energy,and biomedicine.

Electrochemical behavior of Nd in its pyrometallurgical recovery from waste magnet

High-purity Nd metal was recovered from waste Nd–Fe–B magnet by the molten salt electrowinning process with chemical pretreatment. X-ray diffraction（XRD）, scanning electron microscopy（SEM）, energy dispersive spectroscopy（EDS）, cyclic voltammetry（CV）,chronopotentiometry（CP）, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer（ICP/AES） were used to characterize the deposit and electrochemical behaviors. The results show that NdF_3 is effectively synthesized from the Nd–Fe–B magnet using HCl solution and NH4F. During the chemical treatment of the waste magnet,iron impurity is eliminated as a soluble [NH4]3[FeF6]complex. Electrowinning using NdF_3 in LiF molten salt shows that Nd metal is deposited from the electrolyte onthe cathode at the reduction potentials ranging from-1.48to-1.35 V（vs. W） with the concentration change of NdF_*** final purity of Nd metal deposit is higher than99.78 %.

Relationship between the zonal displacement of the western Pacific subtropical high and the dominant modes of low-tropospheric circulation in summer

The zonal displacement of the western Pacific subtropical high remarkably influences the climate anomalies in China. In this paper,a new zonal index of the subtropical high is defined by modifying previous indices,and is used to investigate the relationship between the zonal displacement of the subtropical high and the dominant modes of 850-hPa circulations. It is found that the zonal displacement of the subtropical high is significantly correlated with the first two leading modes of circulations. In particular,the correlation coefficient between the index and the time series associated with the second mode is as high as 0.78 in 1958-2003 (46 years). Since the second mode is not associated with significant anomalies of sea surface temperatures,the above results imply the diffculty in seasonal forecasting of the zonal displacement of the subtropical high. In addition,the interannual variability in the zonal displacement of the subtropical high has been considerably enhanced since 1978,due to the effects of both dominant modes,especially the second mode. This is likely to account for the frequent occurrence of anomalous climate in China during the recent two decades.

Potent inhibitors of human peptide deformylase(HsPDF)were screened using known PMT analog inhibitors of bacterial peptide ***-three species of PMT analogs that are non-peptidyl bacterial PDF inhibitors like actinonin were selected using virtual screening *** species out of 43 that could bind to HsPDF were selected and their antitumor activities were *** them,four species(PMT-172,PMT-173,PMT-199,and PMT-201)showed excellent growth inhibition of cancer cell in the MTT ***-PMT binding was confirmed through a1H-CPMG-T2filter NMR experiment leading to a significant change in peak intensity for PMT-172 and *** results suggest that PMT analogs could possibly interact with HsPDF and be a novel anticancer drug candidate.

Organic solar cells for indoor power generation

During last decades,organic solar cells(OSCs)have achieved remarkable advancements via extensive studies on the optimization of photovoltaic donor/acceptor(D/A)materials,device fabrication,and the D/A bulk heterojunction *** conversion efficiencies(PCEs)up to〜16%for single junction cells and over 17%PCEs were successfully demonstrated for tandem OSC devices[1,2].OSCs may find real industrial applications soon,including building integrated photovoltaics,portable power sources and indoor power generation for low power consumption electronic devices(i.e.,internet of things(IOT)sensors).Among them,indoor applications have great potentials because OSCs can convert indoor lights into electricity more efficiently compared to inorganic counterparts[3].

A Hybrid Instance Selection Using Nearest-Neighbor for Cross-Project Defect Prediction

Software defect prediction （SDP） is an active research field in software engineering to identify defect-prone modules. Thanks to SDP, limited testing resources can be effectively allocated to defect-prone modules. Although SDP requires sufficient local data within a company, there are cases where local data are not available, e.g., pilot projects. Companies without local data can employ cross-project defect prediction （CPDP） using external data to build classifiers. The major challenge of CPDP is different distributions between training and test data. To tackle this, instances of source data similar to target data are selected to build classifiers. Software datasets have a class imbalance problem meaning the ratio of defective class to clean class is far low. It usually lowers the performance of classifiers. We propose a Hybrid Instance Selection Using Nearest-Neighbor （HISNN） method that performs a hybrid classification selectively learning local knowledge （via k-nearest neighbor） and global knowledge （via na/ve Bayes）. Instances having strong local knowledge are identified via nearest-neighbors with the same class label. Previous studies showed low PD （probability of detection） or high PF （probability of false alarm） which is impractical to overall performance as well as high PD and low PF. use. The experimental results show that HISNN produces high overall performance as well as high PD and low PF.

Comparison of different nutritional assessments in detecting malnutrition among gastric cancer patients

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative malnutrition and the relationships between objective and subjective nutritional assessment of gastric cancer patients. METHODS: From October 2005 to July 2006, we studied 80 patients with no evidence of recurrent disease and no loss to follow-up after curative surgery for gastric cancer. In this group, 9 patients underwent total gastrectomy and 71 patients subtotal gastrectomy. At admission, 6 and 12 mo after surgery, the patients were assessed on the subjective global assessment (SGA), nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002), nutritional risk index (NRI) and by anthropometric measurements and laboratory data. Differences between the independent groups were assessed with the Student's t test and oneway analysis of variance. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the association between the scores and variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition at admissionwas 31% by SGA and 43% by NRS-2002. At admission, the anthropometric data were lower in the malnourished groups defined by the SGA and NRS-2002 assessments, but did not differ between the groups using the NRI assessment. Body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), triceps skin fold and midarm circumference were significantly reduced, but the total lymphocyte count, albumin, protein, cholesterol and serum iron levels did not decrease during the postoperative period. Six months after surgery, there was a good correlation between the nutritional assessment tools (SGA and NRS-2002) and the other nutritional measurement tools (BW, BMI, and anthropometric measurements). However, 12 mo after surgery, most patients who were assessed as malnourished by SGA and NRS-2002 had returned to their preoperative status, although their BW, BMI, and anthropometric measurements still indicated a malnourished status. CONCLUSION: A combination of objective and subjective assessments is needed for the early detection of the nutritional status

Revascularization of immature necrotic teeth is a reliable treatment alternative to conventional apexogenesis or apexification. In case 1, a 12-year-old boy had his necrotic, immature mandibular left second premolar treated with a revascularization technique. At a 24-month follow-up, periapical radiolucency had disappeared and thickening of the root wall was observed. In cases 2 and 3, a lO-year-old boy had his necrotic, immature, bilateral mandibular second premolars treated with the same modality. At 48-month （in case 2） and 42-month （in case 3） follow-ups, loss of periapical radiolucencies and increases in the root wall thickness were also observed.
