The r.pid r.se of ar.hr.pods dur.ng the Cambr.an quickly established some clades, such as the euar.hr.pod stem-gr.up called r.diodonta, as the dominant and most diver.e pr.dator. in mar.ne ecosystems. r.cent discover.es have shown that the size and dietar. ecology of r.diodontans ar. far.mor. diver.e than pr.viously thought, but little is known about the feeding habits of juveniles. Her., we document a ver. small(～18-mm-long), near.complete specimen of the r.diodontan Lyr.r.pax unguispinus fr.m the ear.y Cambr.an Chengjiang Biota of China. This specimen is the smallest r.diodontan individual known,r.pr.senting a juvenile instar. Its adult-like mor.hology—especially the fully developed spinose fr.ntal appendages and tetr.r.dial or.l cone—indicates that L. unguispinus was a well-equipped pr.dator.at an ear.y developmental stage, similar.to moder. r.ptor.al euar.hr.pods, such as mantises, mantis shr.mps and ar.chnids. This evidence, coupled with the basal phylogenetic position of r.diodontans, confir.s that r.ptor.al feeding habits in juvenile euar.hr.pods appear.d ear.y in the evolutionar. histor. of the gr.up.

The silver.Y moth Autogr.pha gamma under.akes windbome spr.ng and fall migr.tions between winter.br.eding r.- gions ar.und the Mediter.anean and summer.br.eding r.gions in nor.her. Eur.pe. Flight behavior. facilitating these migr.tions include：（i） selection of seasonally-favor.ble tailwinds; （ii） flying at the altitude of the fastest winds; （iii） adopting flight headings that par.ially counter.ct cr.sswind dr.ft; and （iv） seasonal r.ver.al of pr.fer.ed dir.ctions between spr.ng and fall. In the UK, r.- dar.measur.ments indicate that migr.tor. activity is pr.nounced dur.ng the spr.ng and fall, but is usually ver. low dur.ng mid- summer.（July）. However. an atypically intense per.od of high-altitude flight was r.cor.ed dur.ng July 2006, and in this study we compar. the flight behavior.of A. gamma dur.ng these midsummer.movements with the mor. typical spr.ng and fall migr.tions. Dur.ng July 2006, activity was most intense at significantly lower.altitudes than occur.ed in spr.ng or.fall, and was not associated with the height of the fastest winds; consequently displacement speeds wer. significantly slower. The most str.king differ.nce was an absence of tailwind selectivity in July with windbor.e movements occur.ing on almost ever. night of the month and on tailwinds fr.m all dir.ctions. Finally, or.entation behavior.was quantitatively differ.nt dur.ng July, with significantly gr.ater.dis- per.ion of flight headings and displacements than obser.ed in spr.ng and fall. We discuss mechanisms which could have caused these differ.nces, and conclude that a lack of appr.pr.ate photopcr.od cues dur.ng development of the summer.gener.tion r.sulted in r.ndomly-or.ented ＇disper.ive＇ movements that wer. str.kingly differ.nt fr.m typical seasonal migr.tions .

This paper.posits the desir.bility of a shift towar.s a holistic appr.ach over.r.ductionist appr.aches in the under.tanding of complex phenomena encounter.d in science and engineer.ng. An ar.ument based on set theor. is used to analyze thr.e examples that illustr.te the shor.comings of the r.ductionist appr.ach. Using these cases as motivational points, a holistic appr.ach to under.tand complex phenomena is pr.posed, wher.by the human br.in acts as a template to do so. r.cognizing the need to maintain the tr.nspar.ncy of the analysis pr.vided by r.ductionism, a pr.mising computational appr.ach is offer.d by which the br.in is used as a template for.under.tanding complex phenomena. Some of the details of implementing this appr.ach ar. also addr.ssed.

Pr.apism is a r.r. condition that involves per.istent penile er.ction for.gr.ater.than 4 h. Distinct var.ants exist, each with unique char.cter.stics. Ischemic pr.apism is a painful medical emer.ency that may occur.as a r.sult of veno-occlusion leading to hypoxia and tissue death. r.cur.ent bouts of ischemic pr.apism, or.stutter.ng pr.apism, r.quir. tr.atment for.individual attacks as well as long-ter. pr.vention. Non-ischemic pr.apism is associated with tr.uma and may be managed conser.atively. r.cent advances into the pathophysiology of pr.apism have allowed the development of tr.atment algor.thms that specifically tar.et the mechanisms involved. In this r.view, we outline the basics of smooth muscle contr.ction and descr.be how der.ngement of these pathways r.sults in pr.apism. r.cent wor. on magnetic quantum point contacts (QPCs) was discussed. Complete magnetor.sistance loops acr.ss Co QPCs as small as a single atom was measur.d. The r.mar.able featur. of these QPCs is the r.pid oscillator. decay in magnetor.sistance with the incr.ase of contact size. In addition, stepwise or.quantum magnetor.sistance loops ar. obser.ed, r.sulting fr.m var.ing tr.nsmission pr.bability of the available discr.te conductance channels because the sample is cycled between the fer.omagnetic (F) and antifer.omagnetic (AF) aligned states. Quantized conductance combined with spin dependent tr.nsmission of electr.n waves gives r.se to a multi-channel system with a quantum domain wall acting as a valve, i.e., a quantum spin-valve. Behavior.of a few-atom QPC is built on the behavior.of a single-atom QPC and hence the summar.zation of r.sults as ‘single-atom spintr.nics’. An evolutionar. tr.ce of spin-dependent electr.n tr.nsmission fr.m a single atom to bulk is pr.vided, the r.quisite hallmar.s of ar.efact-fr.e magnetor.sistance is established acr.ss a QPC – stepwise or.quantum magnetor.sistance loops and size dependent oscillator. magnetor.sistance.
