Aims Variation in precipitation strongly influences plant growth,species distributions and genetic *** variation in pheno-typic plasticity,the ability of a genotype to alter its growth,morphol-ogy or physiology in response to the environment,could influence species responses to changing precipitation and climate *** this,the patterns and mechanisms of intraspecific varia-tion in plasticity to variable precipitation,and the degree to which genotype responses to precipitation are influenced by variation in edaphic conditions,remain poorly ***,we determined whether genotypes of a widespread C_(4) grass(Panicum virgatum L.,switchgrass)varied in aboveground productivity in response to changes in precipitation,and if site edaphic conditions modified genotype aboveground productivity responses to *** also determined if genotype productivity responses to precipitation are related to plasticity in underlying growth and phenological *** Nine *** genotypes originating from an aridity gradient were grown under four treatments spanning the 10th to the 90th percentiles of annual precipitation at two sites in central Texas:one site with deep,fine-textured soils and another site with shallow,coarse-textured *** measured volumetric soil water content(VWC),aboveground net primary productivity(ANPP),tiller pro-duction(tiller number),average tiller mass,canopy height,leaf area index(LAi)and flowering time on all plants at both sites and examined genotype responses to changes in *** Findings Across precipitation treatments,VWC was 39%lower and more variable at the site with shallow,coarse-textured soils compared to the site with deep,fine-textured *** averaged across genotypes and precipita-tion treatments was also 103%higher at the site with deep,fine-textured soils relative to the site with shallow,coarse-textured soils,indicating substantial differences in site water limitation.W

The Effects of a Single Bout of Exercise on Mood and Self-Esteem in Clinically Diagnosed Mental Health Patients

Objectives: Research has highlighted the importance of regular exercise within the general population and mental health groups in regard to mood and self-esteem, as well as single bout exercise within the general population. However, research into single bout exercise in mental health population is lacking. This study investigated the impact of a single bout of exercise, on mood and self-esteem, in patients with a wider clinical mental health diagnosis. Design: A quantitative questionnaire was completed immediately pre and post a single, 45 minute bout of moderate intensity exercise, consisting of the Brunel Universal Mood States (BRUMS) questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSE). Methods: Participants attending a mental health hospital with a clinical mental health diagnosis (N = 54) completed the questionnaire. Information regarding physical activity levels, mental health diagnosis and length of hospital stay were collated. Results: A significant improvement was identified on the RSE as well as the BRUMS (depression, anger, confusion, anxious tension and vigour) over time. Conclusion: The significant findings highlight the importance of exercise promotion within this population group, and the potentially beneficial role that a single bout of exercise can have on mood and self-esteem in patients experiencing mental health problems.

Objective:The main objective of this initiative was to present evaluation results from an inno-vative adaptation of the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics(ALSO)training *** modified the traditional ALSO curriculum in our institution by adding hands-on training in laceration repairs and simulation scenarios on acute maternity ***:The modified ALSO provider course was designed to enhance cognitive and proce-dural skills of health care professionals in managing obstetric ***-nine participants attended this course and completed a posttraining *** statistics were used to de-scribe the participant-reported assessment scores for the ALSO course on three domains(subject knowledge,organization and clarity,and teaching effectiveness)for each of 12 course ***:Evaluation of the results showed a high rate of trainee satisfaction as evidenced by the mean assessment scores across all topics ranging from 4.80 to 4.98(out of 5.00).All trainees said they would refer others to the *** modified ALSO course effectively addressed the important needs of primary care physicians involved in maternity care,especially in underserved communities where specialized obstetric care is not readily *** simulation scenarios and workshops using simulated human tissue provide a better foundation before formal ***:Given the changing legal and regulatory climate,we expect that learning to treat complex obstetric situations on the job will become increasingly *** this in mind,both simulation scenarios and workshops using simulated human tissue will provide a better foundation before formal training.

Development of a New Approach for the Therapy of Prostate Cancer with SPOP Mutations

Advanced prostate cancer is treated with androgen deprivation, but most patients eventually progress and need new therapy. Recent genomic/exomic sequencing identified SPOP as the most frequently mutated gene in 6% - 15% of prostate cancer. Based on the function of SPOP as a ubiquitin ligase in protein degradation, it was hypothesized that loss-of-function mutations of SPOP led to accumulation of SPOP substrates that enhance androgen receptor activity and facilitate prostate cancer formation. SPOP substrates could thus be potential targets for treatment of androgen-sensitive prostate cancer. PubMed and BLAST search identified that Gli, SRC-3, and AWP1 are SPOP substrates, and that inhibition of PRK-1, a binding partner of AWP1, by lestaurtinib suppressed androgen receptor activity. LNCaP, PC3, DU145 and 22RV1 prostate cancer cells were used to evaluate the effect of lestaurtinib. LNCaP cells, an androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cell line, were the most sensitive. SRC-3 protein decreased when LNCaP cells were treated with lestaurtinib;whereas PRK-1 increased in nucleus after lestaurtinib treatment. These data suggest that lestaurtinib modulates SRC-3 and PRK-1 to induced cell death in androgen-sensitive prostate cancer, and could be a useful agent for future development for prostate cancer with SPOP mutations.

Experience with Thoracic Aortic Stent-Grafting at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital: Outcomes from the First Decade

Objectives: To describe thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) outcomes at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital between 2001-2010. Design: Prospective cohort study. Results: We successfully treated 95 of 97 patients for a 98% procedural success rate. Of the treated patients, 68 (72%) were males and mean age was 61 ± 17 years. Average follow up was 3.6 ± 2.0 years. Pathologies treated were: dissection (n = 35), aneurysmal disease (n = 32), traumatic disease (n = 19), coarctation (n = 5) and miscellaneous (n = 4). There was one peri-procedural myocardial infarction. Renal complications occurred in 7 patients (3 with doubling creatinine and 4 requiring temporary renal replacement therapy). Stroke occurred in 2 patients and paresis in 2 patients (permanent in one). Six patients died during index hospitalization and 17 deaths occurred during follow-up, 2 of which were confirmed secondary to aortic pathology. Age (HR 1.08 per year, p < 0.01) and ASA class (HR 2.2 per class, p = 0.02) were independently associated with mortality. There were 25 re-interventions in 22 patients. Eighteen of these re-interventions in 16 patients were related to the management of complications of TEVAR of which 13 were for endoleaks;eight type I, four type II, one type III. Conclusion: TEVAR can be used to treat thoracic aortic pathology but questions remain regarding long-term durability.

Modern societal pressures and expectations over the past several decades have resulted in the tendency for couples to delay conception. While women experience a notable decrease in oocyte production in their late thirties, the effect of age on spermatogenesis is less well described. While there are no known limits to the age at which men can father children, the effects of advanced paternal age are incompletely understood. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding advanced paternal age and its implications on semen quality, reproductive success and offspring health. This review will serve as a guide to physicians in counseling men about the decision to delay paternity and the risks involved with conception later in life.

Examining the Role of Personality Factors in Problematic Video Game Play Associated with Facebook Games

The current study used the structural components of Facebook games to select predictors of Problematic Video Game Play (PVGP) in relation to Facebook games. Based upon how game design and structure may interact with personality characteristics, the current study examined the effects of hypercompetitiveness, narcissism, reward responsiveness and psychological absorption on PVGP for a group of Facebook gamers. Moreover, the present study also observed how results may differ between Facebook gamers (n = 102), and a group of other (non-Facebook) gamers (n = 132). The Facebook group comprised 84% of females with an average age of 40.39 (SD = 14.00), whereas the other group of gamers consisted of 61% of males with an average age of 24.70 (SD = 7.86). Participants completed an online survey. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) revealed that an interaction between hypercompetitiveness and narcissism was the only significant predictor of PVGP for Facebook gamers. In contrast, a second structural model revealed that both hypercompetitiveness and psychological absorption were significant predictors of PVGP for other types of gamers. The findings from this study had important implications regarding the structure of video games and demographic differences between Facebook Gamers and other types of gamers.
