High-speed ophthalmic optical coherence tomography(OCT)systems are of interest because they allow rapid,motion-free,and wide-field retinal ***-division multiplexing optical coherence tomography(SDMOCT)is a high-speed imaging technology that takes advantage of the long coherence length of micro electro mechanical vertical cavity surface emitting laser sources to multiplex multiple images along a single imaging *** demonstrate wide-field retinal OCT imaging,acquired at an effective A-scan rate of 800,000 A-scans/s with volumetric images covering up to 12.5 mm×7.4 mm on the retina and captured in less than 1 s.A clinical feasibility study was conducted to compare the ophthalmic SDM-OCT with commercial OCT systems,illustrating the high-speed capability of SDM-OCT in a clinical setting.

The rapid rise of arthropods during the Cambrian quickly established some clades, such as the euarthropod stem-group called Radiodonta, as the dominant and most diverse predators in marine ecosystems. Recent discoveries have shown that the size and dietary ecology of radiodontans are far more diverse than previously thought, but little is known about the feeding habits of juveniles. Here, we document a very small(～18-mm-long), near-complete specimen of the radiodontan Lyrarapax unguispinus from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Biota of China. This specimen is the smallest radiodontan individual known,representing a juvenile instar. Its adult-like morphology—especially the fully developed spinose frontal appendages and tetraradial oral cone—indicates that L. unguispinus was a well-equipped predator at an early developmental stage, similar to modern raptorial euarthropods, such as mantises, mantis shrimps and arachnids. This evidence, coupled with the basal phylogenetic position of radiodontans, confirms that raptorial feeding habits in juvenile euarthropods appeared early in the evolutionary history of the group.

The Effects of Sex on Patient Reported Outcomes in Inflammatory Arthritis and Connective Tissue Diseases

Background: It was thought that women report higher pain than men. We studied if there was a sex difference for several patient reported outcomes (PROs) in rheumatic diseases. Materials and Methods: Health Assessment Questionnaire disability index (HAQ-DI) as well as 100 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and patient global assessment were compared cross-sectionally between the sexes for ankylosingspondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). Data were collected using standardized forms administered during routine care. Results: The sample included 136 patients (97 males) with AS, 200 (83 males) with PsA, 232 (40 males) with RA, 199 (12 males) with SLE, and 113 (17 males) with SSc. There were no significant differences in AS. There were sex differences in PsA for HAQ (0.85 females, 0.57 males;p s, 36.8 males;p s, 31.6 males;p s, 36.0 males;p s, 33.1 males;p whereas, in SSc, men had a higher global assessment (52.9 males, 38.1 females;p Conclusions: A significant sex difference was observed in PsA with females reporting worse symptoms. In SSc, global assessments were worse in males possibly due to proportionately more diffuse cutaneous SSc. Sex differences for PROs are not consistent between rheumatic inflammatory diseases in prevalent patients.

Introduction and Aims—The Growth stage of a patient can have considerable influence on diagnosis, treatment goals, timing and planning and the eventual outcome of orthodontic/orthopedic treatment. The purpose of this study was to analyze associations between the cervical vertebrae maturation score (CVMS) and skeletal maturation index (SMI). The second objective was to determine the reproducibility of the measurements on lateral cephalograms and hand-wrist radiographs. Materials and Methods—Lateral cephalometric and left hand-wrist radiographs of 92 untreated subjects (44 females and 48 males) aged from 8 to 17 years were obtained from the files of the Columbia University, Division of Orthodontics and measured for growth stage using cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist methods. Results—A high correlation was revealed between the hand-wrist and cervical vertebrae measurements. The Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient was 0.925 and significant at the 0.01 level. The correlation between hand-wrist and age (0.665, p < 0.01) was slightly greater than that of the CVMS (0.611, p < 0.01). Intra rater reliability was high. When the three categorically modified methods of the Fishman’s 11 skeletal maturation stages in hand and wrist analysis were used to compare with CVMS, methods 2 and 3 were both statistically significantly different according to the Wilcoxon signed ranks test and the Sign test at a significance level of less than 0.05. However, for method 1, the tests showed probability scores of 0.028 and 0.151, respectively, showing no significant difference at the 0.01 level in the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and no significant difference in the 0.01 and 0.05 level in the Signed Test. Conclusions—The Fishman’s hand and wrist skeletal maturation index and Bacetti’s cervical vertebrae maturation stages are both useful tools in evaluating growth stages. Fishman’s hand-wrist method is slightly more accurate.

Glucocorticoid(GC) steroid hormones are used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL) because of their pro-apoptotic effects in hematopoietic ***,not all leukemia cells are sensitive to GC,and no assay to stratify patients is *** the GC-sensitive T-cell ALL cell line CEM-C7,auto-up-regulation of RNA transcripts for the glucocorticoid receptor(GR) correlates with increased apoptotic *** study aimed to determine if a facile assay of GR transcript levels might be promising for stratifying ALL patients into hormone-sensitive and hormone-resistant *** GR transcript profiles of various lymphoid cell lines and 4 bone marrow samples from patients with T-cell ALL were analyzed using both an optimized branched DNA(bDNA) assay and a real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction *** were significant correlations between both assay platforms when measuring total GR(exon 5/6) transcripts in various cell lines and patient samples,but not for a probe set that detects a specific,low abundance GR transcript(exon 1A3).Our results suggest that the bDNA platform is reproducible and precise when measuring total GR transcripts and,with further development,may ultimately offer a simple clinical assay to aid in the prediction of GC-sensitivity in ALL patients.

here has been a strong need for simulation environments that are capable of modeling deep interdependencies between complex systems encountered during natural hazards,such as the interactions and coupled effects between civil infrastructure systems response,human behavior,and social policies,for improved community *** such complex components with an integrated simulation requires continuous data exchange between different simulators simulating separate models during the entire simulation *** can be implemented by means of distributed simulation platforms or data passing *** order to provide a systematic reference for simulation tool choice and facilitating the development of compatible distributed simulators for deep interdependent study in the context of natural hazards,this article focuses on generic tools suitable for integration of simulators from different fields but not the platforms that are mainly used in some specific *** this aim,the article provides a comprehensive review of the most commonly used generic distributed simulation platforms(Distributed Interactive Simulation(DIS),High Level Architecture(HLA),Test and Training Enabling Architecture(TENA),and Distributed Data Services(DDS))and data passing tools(Robot Operation System(ROS)and Lightweight Communication and Marshalling(LCM))and compares their advantages and *** specific limitations in existing platforms are identified from the perspective of natural hazard *** mitigating the identified limitations,two platform design recommendations are provided,namely message exchange wrappers and hybrid communication,to help improve data passing capabilities in existing solutions and provide some guidance for the design of a new domain-specific distributed simulation framework.

Objective:To review and assess the ideal length of electrode in cochlear implant patients for hearing preservation. Methods:The English language literature was reviewed for studies including hearing preserva-tion and speech understanding for electrodes of different lengths. Results:One prospective trial was found, and there were no studies that randomized patients into different length electrodes with an intent to preserve hearing. Eight studies total included multiple length electrodes and contained data regarding hearing preservation. Conclusions: Although there is some evidence that indicates that shorter electrodes may improve both short and long-term hearing preservation rates in cochlear implant patients, no study has directly compared implant length on hearing preservation in a similar patient pop-ulation. A randomized trial of short and standard length electrodes for hearing preservation is warranted. In the interim, utilization of current electrodes measuring 20e25 mm could seem to be a prudent approach when seeking to preserve residual hearing without unduly compro-mising cochlear coverage.
