Quantifying and Validating Soybean Seed Emergence Model as a Function of Temperature

Developing a model for soybean seed emergence offers a tool producers could use for planting date options and in predicting seedling emergence. In this study, temperature effects on soybean seed emergence were quantified, modeled, and validated. The data for seed emergence model development was generated at varying temperatures, 20°C/12°C, 25°C/17°C, 30°C/22°C, 35°C/27°C, and 40°C/32°C, on two soybean cultivars, Asgrow AG5332 and Progeny P 5333 RY. Time for 50% emergence (t50%) was recorded, and seed emergence rate (SER) was estimated as reciprocal to time at each temperature in both the cultivars. No differences were observed between the cultivars in their response to temperature. A quadratic model (QM) best described the relationship between t50% and SGR and temperature (R2 = 0.93). Two sets of experiments were conducted to validate the model. In Experiment 1, 17 time-series planting date studies with the same cultivars were used by utilizing diurnal and seasonal changes in temperature conditions. In the second experiment, sunlit growth chambers with 3 different day/night temperatures, low—20°C/12°C, optimum—30°C/22°C, and high—40°C/32°C, and 64 soybean cultivars belonging MG III, IV, and V, were used. Air temperature and t50 were recorded, and SGR was estimated in all experiments. No differences were recorded among the cultivars for t50% and SGR, but differences were observed among seeding date and temperature experiments. We tested QM and traditionally used Growing Degree Days models against the data collected in validation experiments. Both the model simulations predictions agreed closely with the observed data. Based on model statistics, R2, root mean square errors (RMSE), and comparison of observations and predictions to assess model performance, the QM model performed better than the GDD model for soybean seed emergence under a wide range of cultivars and environmental conditions.

Allograft loss from acute Page kidney secondary to trauma after kidney transplantation

We report a rare case of allograft loss from acute Page kidney secondary to trauma that occurred 12 years after kidney transplantation. A 67-year-old Caucasian male with a past surgical history of kidney transplant presented to the emergency department at a local hospital with left lower abdominal tenderness. He recalled that his cat, which weighs 15 lbs, jumped on his abdomen 7 d prior. On physical examination, a small tender mass was noticed at the incisional site of the kidney transplant. He was producing a normal amount of urine without hematuria. His serum creatinine level was slightly elevated from his baseline. Computer tomography revealed a large subscapular hematoma around the transplant kidney. The patient was observed to have renal trauma grade Ⅱ at the hospital over a period of three days, and he was finally transferred to a transplant center after his urine output significantly decreased. Doppler ultrasound demonstrated an extensive peri-allograft hypoechoic area and abnormal waveforms with absent arterial diastolic flow and a patent renal vein. Despite surgical decompression, the allograft failed to respond appropriately due to the delay in surgical intervention. This is the third reported case of allograft loss from acute Page kidney following kidney transplantation. This case reinforces that kidney care differs if the kidney is solitary or a transplant. Early recognition and aggressive treatments are mandatory, especially in a case with Doppler signs that are suggestive of compression.

Melon is as an alternative model to understand fruit ripening due to the coexistence of climacteric and non-climacteric varieties within the same species,allowing the study of the processes that regulate this complex trait with genetic *** phenotyped a population of recombinant inbred lines(RILs),obtained by crossing a climacteric(Védrantais,cantalupensis type)and a non-climcteric variety(Piel de Sapo T111,inodorus type),for traits related to climacteric maturation and ethylene *** in the RIL population exhibited various combinations of phenotypes that differed in the amount of ethylene produced,the early onset of ethylene production,and other phenotypes associated with *** characterized a major QTL on chromosome 8,ETHQV8.1,which is sufficient to activate climacteric ripening,and other minor QTLs that may modulate the climacteric *** ETHQV8.1 allele was validated by using two reciprocal introgression line populations generated by crossing Védrantais and Piel de Sapo and analyzing the ETHQV8.1 region in each of the genetic backgrounds.A Genome-wide association study(GWAS)using 211 accessions of the *** further identified two regions on chromosome 8 associated with the production of aromas,one of these regions overlapping with the 154.1 kb interval containing *** ETHQV8.1 region contains several candidate genes that may be related to fruit *** work sheds light into the regulation mechanisms of a complex trait such as fruit ripening.

Nanotechnology has significant economic, health, and environmental benefits, including renewable energy and innovative environmental solutions. Manufactured nanoparticles have been incorporated into new materials and products because of their novel or enhanced properties. These very same properties also have prompted concerns about the potential environmental and human health hazard and risk posed by the manufactured nanomaterials. Appropriate risk management responses require the development of models capable of predicting the environmental and human health effects of the nanomaterials. Development of predictive models has been hampered by a lack of information concerning the environmental fate, behavior and effects of manufactured nanoparticles. The United Kingdom (UK) Environmental Nanoscience Initiative and the United States (US) Environmental Protection Agency have developed an international research program to enhance the knowledgebase and develop risk-predicting models for manufactured nanoparticles. Here we report selected highlights of the program as it sought to maximize the complementary strengths of the transatlantic scientific communities by funding three integrated US-UK consortia to investigate the transformation of these nanoparticles in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environment. Research results demonstrate there is a functional relationship between the physicochemical properties of environmentally transformed nanomaterials and their effects and that this relationship is amenable to modeling. In addition, the joint transatlantic program has allowed the leveraging of additional funding, promoting transboundary scientific collaboration.

‘Concord’,the most well-known juice grape with a parentage of the North American grape species Vitis labrusca L.,possesses a special‘foxy’aroma predominantly resulted from the accumulation of methyl anthranilate(MA)in *** aroma,however,is often perceived as an undesirable attribute by wine consumers and rarely noticeable in the common table and wine grape species *** we discovered homology-induced promoter indels as a major genetic mechanism for species-specific regulation of a key‘foxy’aroma gene,anthraniloyl-CoA:methanol acyltransferase(AMAT),that is responsible for MA *** found the absence of a 426-bp and/or a 42-bp sequence in AMAT promoters highly associated with high levels of AMAT expression and MA accumulation in‘Concord’and other ***-derived *** promoter variants,all with direct and inverted repeats,were further confirmed in more than 1,300 Vitis ***,functional impact of these indels was validated in transgenic *** on the promoter regulation,large structural changes including exonic insertion of a retrotransposon were present at the AMAT locus in some *** *** of the AMAT genetic regulation advances our understanding of the‘foxy’aroma trait and makes it genetically trackable and amenable in grapevine breeding.

背景:代谢紊乱及肠外营养(PN)特征对接受肠外营养的癌症患者生存的影响,目前所知有限。本研究旨在评估临床方法:研究纳入美国MD Anderson癌症中心2008-2013年接受肠外营养支持的572例结直肠癌患者。记录病例特征、体质指数、体质量、药物/手术治疗史、PN适应证、PN相关数据及生存情况。分析临床及PN特征与患者生存的相关性。结果:437例患者纳入最终分析,平均年龄57岁,81%为进展期结直肠癌。经多因素校正后,PN开始前体质量不稳定(变化≥2.5%)与生存负相关(HR=1.41,P=0.023)。肠梗阻作为PN适应证者较无肠梗者预后更差(HR=1.75,P=0.017)。PN配方中每千克理想体质量的氨基酸含量(g/kg)更高者,其生存时间更长(HR=0.59,P=0.029);而非PN配方中的静脉卡路里摄入量更高者,其生存时间更短(HR=1.04,P=0.011)。结论:体质指数和体质量稳定可能是预测接受PN支持的结直肠癌患者预后的有效营养学指标。制定PN计划时应考虑到非PN卡路里的摄入量,从而获得最佳的能量支持和能量平衡。进一步研究需明确PN配方中最优的氨基酸需求量和能量平衡。

Rapid, continuous projection multi-photon 3D printing enabled by spatiotemporal focusing of femtosecond pulses

An exploration of violence, mental health and substance abuse in post-conflict Guatemala

Guatemala’s 36-year civil war officially ended in December 1996 after some 200,000 deaths and one million refugees. Despite the ceasefire, Guatemala continues to be a violent country with one of the highest homicide rates in the world. We investigated potential associations between violence, mental health, and substance abuse in post-conflictGuatemalausing a community-based survey of 86 respondents living in urban and ruralGuatemala. Overall, 17.4% of our respondents had at least one, direct violent experience during the civil war. In the post-conflict period, 90.7% of respondents reported being afraid that they might be hurt by violence, 40.7% screened positive for depression, 50.0% screened positive for PTSD, and 23.3% screened positive for alcohol dependence. Potential associations between prior violent experiences during the war and indicators of PTSD and aspects of alcohol dependence were found in regression-adjusted models (p jury and fear that have persisted since the end of the civil war. These, in turn, have implications for the growing medical and surgical resources needed to address the continuing traumatic and post-traumatic complications in the post-conflict era. Limitations of the current study are discussed. These findings are useful in beginning to understand the downstream effects of the Guatemalan civil war, although a much larger, randomly sampled survey is now needed.
