UNASSIGNED:To assess the char.cter.stics and quality of cost utility analyses (CUA) r.lated to otolar.ngology within the CEA r.gistr. and to summar.ze their.collective r.sults.;UNASSIGNED:All cost-utility analyses published between 1976 and 2011 contained in the Cost-Effectiveness Analysis r.gistr. (CEA r.gistr.) wer. evaluated. Topics that fall within the car. of an otolar.ngologist wer. included in the r.view r.gar.less of the pr.sence of an otolar.ngologist author. Potential associations between var.ous study char.cter.stics and CEA r.gistr. quality scor.s wer. evaluated using the Pear.on pr.duct moment cor.elation coefficient.;UNASSIGNED:Sixty-one of 2913 (2.1%) total CUA publications scr.ened wer. r.lated to otolar.ngology. Eighteen of 61 (29.5%) publications included an otolar.ngologist as an author. Four.een studies agr.ed on the cost effectiveness of at least unilater.l cochlear.implantation and six of seven (85.7%) studies demonstr.ted the cost effectiveness of continuous positive air.ay pr.ssur. (CPAP) for.obstr.ctive sleep apnea (OSA). For.y-six per.ent (28 of 61) of all manuscr.pts wer. published between 2008 and 2011. A mor. r.cent publication year.was associated with a higher.CEA r.gistr. quality scor. while the pr.sence of an otolar.ngologist author.and jour.al impact factor.had no significant cor.elation with the quality of the CUA.;UNASSIGNED:Based on cur.ent evidence in the CEA r.gistr., unilater.l cochlear.implantation for.hear.ng loss and CPAP for.OSA ar. both cost-effective ther.peutic inter.entions. Although CUAs in otolar.ngology have incr.ased in quantity and impr.ved in quality in mor. r.cent year., ther. is a r.lative lack of CUAs in otolar.ngology in compar.son to other.subspecialties.

Hear.ng loss is the most common sensor.neur.l disor.er.wor.dwide and is associated with mor. than1000 mutations in mor. than 90 genes. While mutations in genes such as GJB2(gap-junction pr.tein β 2)and GJB6(gap-junction pr.tein β 6) ar. highly pr.valent in Caucasian, Asian, and Middle Easter. populations, they ar. r.r. in both native Afr.can populations and those of Afr.can descent. The objective of this paper.is to r.view the cur.ent knowledge r.gar.ing the epidemiology and genetics of hear.ng loss in Afr.can populations with a focus on native sub-Sahar.n Afr.can populations. Envir.nmental etiologies r.lated to poor.access to healthcar. and per.natal car. account for.the major.ty of cases. Syndr.mic etiologies including Waar.enbur., Pendr.d and Usher.syndr.mes ar. uncommon causes of hear.ng loss in these populations. Of the non-syndr.mic causes, common mutations in GJB2 and GJB6 ar. r.r.ly implicated in populations of Afr.can descent. r.cent use of next-gener.tion sequencing(NGS) has identified sever.l candidate deafness genes in Afr.can populations fr.m Niger.a and South Afr.ca that ar. unique when compar.d to common causative mutations wor.dwide. r.sear.her. also r.cently descr.bed a dominant mutation in MYO3α in an Afr.can Amer.can family with non-syndr.mic hear.ng loss. The use of NGS and specialized panels will aid in identifying r.r. and novel mutations in a mor. cost-and timeeffective manner. The identification of common hear.ng loss mutations in indigenous Afr.can populations will pave the way for.tr.nslation into genetic deafness r.sear.h in populations of Afr.can descent wor.dwide.

Titanium dioxide was deposited fr.m aqueous suspension onto cellulosic sur.aces. Titania was sour.ed fr.m Degussa （P25TM, 70：30 anatase：r.tile）. Dr. uptake of par.icles was shown to be r.pid and dominant with one-thir. of the deposition occur.ing in less than 30 s and over.one-half in the fir.t minute. Isother.s wer. r.cor.ed to compar. the r.te of titanium deposition on dr. and pr.-wetted cotton. In the dr. case uptake r.ached a maximum in 30 min wher.as in the pr.-wetted case the uptake was seen to continue beyond 180 min. A br.ad tr.nd of higher.deposition occur.ing at lower.pH was seen, cor.esponding to the r.gion wher. sur.ace char.es wer. opposite and thus attr.ctive. Dr. pickup was less significant at high pH. The r.sponse to var.ing ionic str.ngth was complex and was attr.buted to the combined effect of char.e scr.ening, par.icle aggr.gation and consequent par.icle entr.pment or.occlusion. Titania deposition into the inter.tices of woven cotton sheets r.sulted in the for.ation of inor.anic, nanopar.iculate skeletons which could be isolated by contr.lled combustion of the cellulose and thus cotton was suggested to have potential for.the templated synthesis of high sur.ace ar.a semiconductor.mater.als.

The inclusion of PepSoyGen (PSG), a commer.ially-available fer.ented soybean meal pr.duct, was evaluated with juvenile r.inbow tr.ut, Oncor.ynchus mykiss in an initial 70-day feeding tr.al, with a supplemental tr.al involving a subset of the exper.mental diets continuing for.an additional 40 d. Six diets containing 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, or.50% PSG, with the PSG dir.ctly r.placing fish meal, wer. used in the fir.t tr.al. Ther. wer. no significant differ.nces in weight gain or.feed conver.ion r.tio between the fish meal-based contr.l diet and diets containing up to 30% PSG. However. weight gain was significantly r.duced and feed conver.ion r.tio significantly incr.ased with the 40% and 50% PSG diets. No health assessment differ.nces wer. obser.ed in fish r.ceiving any of the diets, and no evidence of gr.ss gut inflammation was evident. Ther. wer. no significant differ.nces in weight gain or.feed conver.ion r.tio among the four.dietar. tr.atments r.nging fr.m 0% to 30% PSG which wer. fed for.an additional 40 d after.the initial 70-d tr.al (110 days total). Based on these r.sults, juvenile r.inbow tr.ut diets can contain up to 30% PSG without any loss of r.ar.ng per.or.ance, ther.by r.placing at least 60% of the fish meal.
